The Blackwood Elements series delivers all this and more with three full-length novels together in one volume. When tragedy strikes, Akari Takeda moves to Boston with her young son to follow her dream of becoming a pianist. But three men get in her way—Jansen, the skilled but uptight violinist, easygoing Jude, who understands how important coffee is to a girl, and Lincoln, the smooth-talking janitor who looks good in leather. Which of them will steal her heart, and who isn't everything he seems? After clearing up the mess in Boston, assassin Snow wants a fresh start of her own. But first, she needs to take a trip to paradise to give her ex what he deserves. That should be straightforward for a woman with her skills, but she’s not the only one who wants Raul dead, and newcomer Leo threatens to derail her plans in more ways than one. Meanwhile, in England, novelist Augusta Fordham’s got a problem of her own, or rather, two of them. Caught between wealthy doctor Gregory and a dark stranger who makes her pulse race as he indulges her fantasies, will she choose comfort and security or take a leap into the unknown? When she makes her decision, she’s thrust into a world of secrets and lies with no one to trust. Only Emmy, her new flatmate, seems to be on Augusta’s side as she discovers there’s just one truth: love is never easy. Grab Oxygen, Lithium, and Carbon and start reading today!

Book excerpt: This “excellent” popular science book explores just what we—and the things around us—are made of (Aftenposten, Norway). Some elements get all the attention: glittering gold, radioactive uranium—materials we call “precious” because they are so rare. But what could be more precious than the building blocks of life—from the oxygen in our air to the carbon in all living things? In The Elements We Live By, physicist and award-winning author Anja Røyne reminds us that we’d be lost without the quiet heroes of the periodic table. Our bodies need phosphorous to hold our DNA together, potassium to power our optic nerves, and many more elements—in just the right amounts—to function. Other fundamental elements keep our technology (and society) running: Our phones contain arsenic, boron, and gallium to control signals and store information; indium and tin for the touch screen; and lithium for the battery. Everything is made of elements—every galaxy, star, and planet—from the iron in Earth’s core to the silicon in its sand. But that doesn’t mean the elements we rely on will never run out; for example, about half the lithium we need is extracted from rocks in Australia, and the other half is from saltwater in Argentina and Chile. As Røyne travels the world to find where these elements exist (some in ever-shrinking amounts), she shows how vitally urgent it is for us to protect them—the elements of our very existence. “Not just a discussion of basic chemistry, this is a volume that looks at the human impact on the planet and what we can learn from nature...Useful for science or sociology courses that address the various impacts of natural resource development or for popular science readers.” —School Library Journal

This book was released on 2018-06-19 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Carbon materials with similar bulk structure but different surface oxygen were compared for their performance as anodes in lithium-ion battery. The bulk structure was such that the graphene planes were perpendicular to the surface. Three types of surfaces were examined: surface containing C=O type oxygen. surface containing -O-C type oxygen, and surface containing high concentration of active sites. The test involved cycles of lithium insertion into and release from the carbon materials, which was in the half cells of carbon/saturated LiI-50/50 (vol %) EC and DMC/lithium. During the first cycle of lithium insertion, the presence of adsorbed oxygen, -O-C type oxygen, active carbon sites, and C=O type oxygen resulted in the formation of solid-electrolyte interface (SEI) when the carbon's voltage relative to lithium metal was >1.35, 1 to 1.35, 0.5 to 1, and 0.67 to 0.7 V, respectively. An optimum -O-C type oxygen and a minimum C=O type oxygen was found to increase the reversible and decrease the irreversible capacity of carbon. Active sites on the carbon surface result in a large irreversible capacity and a second lithium insertion-release mechanism. However, this new mechanism has a short cycle life. Book excerpt: Poetry. "How many gorillas must disappear, so that we can talk comfortably on our cell phones? Tantalum, the chemical element number 73, abundant in African ores, gives us the answer. It makes its confession, along with other ingredients of the world, under the researching pen of Mario Markus. This work removes the threshold between the visible and the invisible, indifference and surprise, science and poetry. The chemical elements are more than gadgets of the universe: they are some of the wonderful responses that shape our bodies and fill our spirits with a lasting plenitude. Markus' frank and rich poetry shows this to us as he relates the elements to wine and pencils, music and lamps, mirrors and the courtship of butterflies. From verse to verse, the periodic table becomes no longer a rigid information scheme, but a window into creation and its most precious truth, which is life."—Fl via Alvares Ganem, Brazilian poet

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: You know what they say about showbiz? They love to build you up, and then they tear you down. Luna Maara never wanted to be a star, but by the time she realised she hated the limelight, she was in too deep. Sold-out concerts, fans screaming her name on the street, memes going viral whenever parts of her fell out of a costume. Oh, and stalkers. Don’t forget the stalkers. The latest one calls himself Mark Antony, and he sends her linguine carbonara and…dog treats? Most people think she has it all—the fame, the money, the luxurious lifestyle. But under the facade, there’s nothing but an empty shell. Everyone close to her lies, or takes advantage of her, or both. Her family, her friends—she can’t trust anyone. Not even Ryder. Somehow, her former bodyguard’s betrayal hurt most of all. Former SEAL Ryder Metcalfe never meant to fall in love again, but during a nightmare trip to the Caribbean, a prickly pop princess wormed her way under his skin. And then she ditched him. Which was his own fault, and also his biggest regret. He can’t turn back the clock. He can’t change fate. But somebody else can. When Luna’s scared, there’s only one person to call. Only one man she trusts, with her body if not with her heart. Mark Antony might gift Ryder a second chance, but he’s determined the star-crossed couple won’t get a third. Blue Moon is a story of second chances and self-discovery with plenty of dark humour and a morally grey girl squad. There’s also some grovelling and a dog. Who doesn’t love a dog?
