Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Elements of Vital Statistics When, some years ago, I first undertook the duties of a Medical Officer of Health, I had considerable difficulty in obtaining trustworthy guidance in the preparation of statistical reports. My researches on the subject revealed the fact that the chief if not the only sources of trustworthy information were the official reports of the Registrar-General and some scattered articles in encyclopedias and in the transactions of learned societies. Further investigation showed that, apart from the reports and articles referred to, a large mass of statistical information was current, which was untrustworthy in its methods of compilation and arrangement, and fallacious in its inferences. It became necessary, therefore, to enter on a somewhat extensive examination of the whole subject; and from the notes gradually accumulated during the years which have since elapsed, I have prepared the present guide to the subject, in the hope that it may be as useful to others as such a guide would have been to me at an earlier stage.
