Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Elements of Geology: Adapted to the Use of Schools and Colleges Technical terms have, in a few instances, been introduced, and principles referred to, which are subsequently explained. The index will, however, enable the student to understand them, without a separate glossary. Some may prefer to commence with the second chapter, deferring the study of the elementary substances, minerals and rocks, to the last. Such a course may be pursued with out Special inconvenience. Questions have been added, for the convenience of those teachers who may prefer to conduct their recitations by this means. But, when the circumstances of the case admit of it, a much more complete knowledge of the subject will be acquired by pupils who are required to analyze the sections, and proceed with the recitation themselves; while the teach er has only to correct misapprehension, explain what may seem obscure, and introduce additional illustrations. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Geological Studies; Or Elements of Geology: For High Schools, Colleges, Normal, and Other Schools The author's obligations, of course, lie in every direction; they are, indeed, too many to enumerate. But the effort has been made to draw less on the writers of text books than on original sources. To his publishers, his indebtedness and that of the public is great, for that intelligent liberality which has prompted them to demand, regardless of cost, the best style of graphic illustration, and a perfection of mechanical execution which will scarcely be found surpassed. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elements of Geology: A d104-Book for Colleges and for the General Reader I have confined myself mostly, though not entirely, to American geology, especially in giving the distribution of the rocks and the physical geography of the different periods. In only one case have I made American geology subordinate, viz., in the J ura-trias period, and that only because of the meagerness of the record of this period in this country. External geological agencies: The work of the weather. The work of ground water. Rivers and valleys. River deposits. The work of glaciers. The work of the wind. The sea and its shores. Offshore and deep-sea deposits -- Part II. Internal geological agencies: Movements of the earth's crust. Earthquakes. Volcanoes. Underground structures of igneous origin. Metamorphism and mineral veins -- Part III. Historical geology: The geological record. The pre-Cambrian systems. The Cambrian. The Ordovician and Silurian. The Devonian. The Carboniferous. The Mesozoic. The Tertiary. The Quaternary. Geology is a science of such rapid growth that no apology is expected when from time to time a new text-book is added to those already in the field. The present work, however, is the outcome of the need of a text-book of very simple outline, in which causes and their consequences should be knit together as closely as possible, --a need long felt by the author in his teaching, and perhaps by other teachers also. The author has ventured, therefore, to depart from the common usage which subdivides geology into a number of departments, --dynamical, structural, physiographic, and historical, --and to treat in immediate connection with each geological process the land forms and the rock structures which it has produced. It is hoped that the facts of geology and the inferences drawn from them have been so presented as to afford an efficient discipline in inductive reasoning. Typical examples have been used to introduce many topics, and it has been the author's aim to give due proportion to both the wide generalizations of our science and to the concrete facts on which they rest. There have been added a number of practical exercises such as the author has used for several years in the class room. These are not made so numerous as to displace the problems which no doubt many teachers prefer to have their pupils solve impromptu during the recitation, but may, it is hoped, suggest their use.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Text-Book of Geology, Vol. 1: For Use in Universities Colleges, Schools of Science, Etc;, And for the General Reader Geology is essentially an historical science in that it continually seeks to determine the origin of things and the changes which they have experienced. The documents upon which the history is based are written in the rocks of the earth itself and the forms Of its surface features; they present a series Of incontrovertible records, and, if we would read this history, it is our part to learn to decipher the records correctly. Much of this has been done, but much also remains to be done; it is the aim of this work to present a general account of what has been accomplished. Many writers define Geology as a history Of the earth and its inhabitants, as Shown by the record in the rocks.
