Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The lectures here reported were first delivered in August and September, 1965, for the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engi neering at syracuse University, New York under the sponsorship of the New York State Science and Technology Foundation. Lectures 1-6 and 22-23 are revised from a version prepared by Professor Kin N. Tong on the basis of a transcription of the lectures, kindly provided by Professor S. Eskinazi. The remainder of th~ text has been written out afresh from my own notes. Much of the same ground was covered in my lectures to the Austra lian Mathematical Society's Summer Research Institute at Melbourne in January and February, 1966, and for the parts affected the text conforms to this latter presentation. I am grateful to Professors C.-C. Wang and K. N. Tong for criticism of the manuscript. These lectures constitute a course, not a treatise. Names are attached to theorems justly, to the best of my knowledge, but are not intended to replace a history of the subject or references to the sources.
Book Synopsis Elements of Continuum Mechanics and Conservation Laws by : S.K. Godunov
Download or read book Elements of Continuum Mechanics and Conservation Laws written by S.K. Godunov and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2003-05-31 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Elements of Continuum Mechanics and Conservation Laws presents a systematization of different models in mathematical physics, a study of the structure of conservation laws, thermodynamical identities, and connection with criteria for well-posedness of the corresponding mathematical problems. The theory presented in this book stems from research carried out by the authors concerning the formulations of differential equations describing explosive deformations of metals. In such processes, elasticity equations are used in some zones, whereas hydrodynamics equations are stated in other zones. Plastic deformations appear in transition zones, which leads to residual stresses. The suggested model contains some relaxation terms which simulate these plastic deformations. Certain laws of thermodynamics are used in order to describe and study differential equations simulating the physical processes. This leads to the special formulation of differential equations using generalized thermodynamical potentials.

Book Synopsis The Elements of Continuum Biomechanics by : Marcelo Epstein
Download or read book The Elements of Continuum Biomechanics written by Marcelo Epstein and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2012-08-13 with total page 387 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An appealing and engaging introduction to Continuum Mechanics in Biosciences This book presents the elements of Continuum Mechanics to people interested in applications to biological systems. It is divided into two parts, the first of which introduces the basic concepts within a strictly one-dimensional spatial context. This policy has been adopted so as to allow the newcomer to Continuum Mechanics to appreciate how the theory can be applied to important issues in Biomechanics from the very beginning. These include mechanical and thermodynamical balance, materials with fading memory and chemically reacting mixtures. In the second part of the book, the fully fledged three-dimensional theory is presented and applied to hyperelasticity of soft tissue, and to theories of remodeling, aging and growth. The book closes with a chapter devoted to Finite Element analysis. These and other topics are illustrated with case studies motivated by biomedical applications, such as vibration of air in the air canal, hyperthermia treatment of tumours, striated muscle memory, biphasic model of cartilage and adaptive elasticity of bone. The book offers a challenging and appealing introduction to Continuum Mechanics for students and researchers of biomechanics, and other engineering and scientific disciplines. Key features: Explains continuum mechanics using examples from biomechanics for a uniquely accessible introduction to the topic Moves from foundation topics, such as kinematics and balance laws, to more advanced areas such as theories of growth and the finite element method.. Transition from a one-dimensional approach to the general theory gives the book broad coverage, providing a clear introduction for beginners new to the topic, as well as an excellent foundation for those considering moving to more advanced application
Book Synopsis Nonlinear Continuum Mechanics for Finite Element Analysis by : Javier Bonet
Download or read book Nonlinear Continuum Mechanics for Finite Element Analysis written by Javier Bonet and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2008-03-13 with total page 349 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Designing engineering components that make optimal use of materials requires consideration of the nonlinear characteristics associated with both manufacturing and working environments. The modeling of these characteristics can only be done through numerical formulation and simulation, and this requires an understanding of both the theoretical background and associated computer solution techniques. By presenting both nonlinear continuum analysis and associated finite element techniques under one roof, Bonet and Wood provide, in this edition of this successful text, a complete, clear, and unified treatment of these important subjects. New chapters dealing with hyperelastic plastic behavior are included, and the authors have thoroughly updated the FLagSHyP program, freely accessible at www.flagshyp.com. Worked examples and exercises complete each chapter, making the text an essential resource for postgraduates studying nonlinear continuum mechanics. It is also ideal for those in industry requiring an appreciation of the way in which their computer simulation programs work.

Book Synopsis Continuum Mechanics and Linear Elasticity by : Ciprian D. Coman
Download or read book Continuum Mechanics and Linear Elasticity written by Ciprian D. Coman and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2019-11-02 with total page 519 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is an intermediate book for beginning postgraduate students and junior researchers, and offers up-to-date content on both continuum mechanics and elasticity. The material is self-contained and should provide readers sufficient working knowledge in both areas. Though the focus is primarily on vector and tensor calculus (the so-called coordinate-free approach), the more traditional index notation is used whenever it is deemed more sensible. With the increasing demand for continuum modeling in such diverse areas as mathematical biology and geology, it is imperative to have various approaches to continuum mechanics and elasticity. This book presents these subjects from an applied mathematics perspective. In particular, it extensively uses linear algebra and vector calculus to develop the fundamentals of both subjects in a way that requires minimal use of coordinates (so that beginning graduate students and junior researchers come to appreciate the power of the tensor notation).

Book Synopsis Elementary Continuum Mechanics for Everyone by : Esben Byskov
Download or read book Elementary Continuum Mechanics for Everyone written by Esben Byskov and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-02-03 with total page 593 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book opens with a derivation of kinematically nonlinear 3-D continuum mechanics for solids. Then the principle of virtual work is utilized to derive the simpler, kinematically linear 3-D theory and to provide the foundation for developing consistent theories of kinematic nonlinearity and linearity for specialized continua, such as beams and plates, and finite element methods for these structures. A formulation in terms of the versatile Budiansky-Hutchinson notation is used as basis for the theories for these structures and structural elements, as well as for an in-depth treatment of structural instability.

Book Synopsis Physical Foundations of Continuum Mechanics by : A. Ian Murdoch
Download or read book Physical Foundations of Continuum Mechanics written by A. Ian Murdoch and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2012-10-22 with total page 439 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ian Murdoch's Physical Foundations of Continuum Mechanics will interest engineers, mathematicians, and physicists who study the macroscopic behaviour of solids and fluids or engage in molecular dynamical simulations. In contrast to standard works on the subject, Murdoch's book examines physical assumptions implicit in continuum modelling from a molecular perspective. In so doing, physical interpretations of concepts and fields are clarified by emphasising both their microscopic origin and sensitivity to scales of length and time. Murdoch expertly applies this approach to theories of mixtures, generalised continua, fluid flow through porous media, and systems whose molecular content changes with time. Elements of statistical mechanics are included, for comparison, and two extensive appendices address relevant mathematical concepts and results. This unique and thorough work is an authoritative reference for both students and experts in the field.

Book excerpt: The mechanics of electromagnetic materials and structures has been developing rapidly with extensive applications in, e. g. , electronics industry, nuclear engineering, and smart materials and structures. Researchers in this interdisciplinary field are with diverse background and motivation. The Symposium on the Mechanics of Electromagnetic Materials and Structures of the Fourth International Conference on Nonlinear Mechanics in Shanghai, China in August 13-16, 2002 provided an opportunity for an intimate gathering of researchers and exchange of ideas. This volume contains papers based on most of the presentations at the symposium, and articles from a few invited contributors. These papers reflect some of the recent activities in the mechanics of electromagnetic materials and structures. The first twelve papers are in the order in which they were listed in the program of the conference. These are followed by six invited papers in alphabetical order of the last names of the first authors. We would like to extend our sincere thanks to Professor David Y. Gao of Virginia Tech for suggesting the symposium, and to the authors for their time and effort invested in preparing their manuscripts. We are also grateful to Professor Daining Fang of Tsinghua University for co-chairing the symposium with J. S. Yang. Our special thanks belong to Kluwer for preparing this book for publication. J. S.
