Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ``Spectroscopy of Crystals Containing Rare Earth Ions'' contains chapters on some key problems selected from a broad range of spectroscopic studies of RE-activated solids including both crystalline and glassy materials. Progress in crystal field theory is surveyed, an area which is basic to our understanding of the energy levels. The treatment of dynamical properties includes studies of coherence phenomena in isolated ions, energy transfer between ions and co-operative phenomena associated with ion-ion and ion-lattice interactions. In addition, the role of electron spins and nuclear spins is studied by light scattering and double resonance techniques. The presence of inhomogeneous broadening of spectral lines is observed and studied in many contexts, leading to new insights into general problems of the disordered state. Considerable attention is devoted to describing new experimental techniques whose development is of prime importance for progress in the spectroscopy of RE-activated solids. Many of these rely on the development and application of tunable lasers. At the moment this is a very active field of spectroscopy with more exciting developments likely to occur in the future.

Download or read book Optical Spectra of Transparent Rare Earth Compounds written by S. Hufner and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Optical Spectra of Transparent Rare Earth Compounds investigates the optical spectra of transparent rare earth (RE) compounds such as europium chalcogenides. Emphasis is placed on the underlying physics in selected examples, and theoretical results are usually presented without proof in a form that allows their application to the interpretation of experimental data. This book is comprised of 11 chapters and begins with an overview of the spectra of RE ions in ionic crystals, paying particular attention to the sharpness of many lines in the absorption and emission spectra. How these very narrow lines arise, what interactions determine their energy, and how they can be used to investigate particular properties of the solid state are explained in detail. Subsequent chapters explore the energy structure of RE free ions in solids; trivalent RE ions in a static crystal field and in a phonon field; magnetic interactions and hyperfine interactions; and Jahn-Teller systems. The absorption spectra of europium chalcogenides are also considered, along with REs in glasses and RE lasers. This monograph is written primarily for solid state physicists and those who need an overall view of the basic features of rare earth spectra in transparent solids, such as new workers.

This book was released on 1966 with total page 45 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The absolute intensities of transitions occurring in the optical spectra of single crystals of Y2O3 doped with small amounts of Pr, Nd, Eu, Er, and Tm; single crystals of LaF3 doped with small amounts of Pr and Nd; and single crystals of Er2O3, Tm2O3, and Yb2O3 have been measured at room temperature. All observed transitions occur within the ground configurations of the trivalent rare-earth ions, and their intensities are accounted for using three phenomenological parameters for each system, whose values are determined by a least-squares fitting calculation. A calculation of the relevant crystal-field terms is made, and theoretical values for the intensity parameters are calculated using free-ion radial wave functions and certain closure approximations. It is concluded that excited 4f(n-1)g configurations contribute to observed intensities more than is indicated by free-ion calculations, and that the excited 4f(n-1)5d configuration contributes to the observed intensities an order to magnitude less than indicated by free-ion calculations. A hypersensitive transition in the neodymium systems is observed and its sensitivity is traced to a simple change in point symmetry of the host. (Author).

Book Synopsis Handbook on the Physics and Chemistry of Rare Earths by :
Download or read book Handbook on the Physics and Chemistry of Rare Earths written by and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2011-09-22 with total page 559 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Optical spectroscopy has been instrumental in the discovery of many lanthanide elements. In return, these elements have always played a prominent role in lighting devices and light conversion technologies (Auer mantles, incandescent lamps, lasers, cathode-ray and plasma displays). They are also presently used in highly sensitive luminescent bio-analyses and cell imaging. This volume of the Handbook on the Physics and Chemistry of Rare Earths is entirely devoted to the photophysical properties of these elements. It is dedicated to the late Professor William T (Bill) Carnall who has pioneered the understanding of lanthanide spectra in the 1960's and starts with a Dedication to this scientist. The following five chapters describe various aspects of lanthanide spectroscopy and its applications. Chapters 231 presents state-of-the-art theoretical calculations of lanthanide energy levels and transition intensities. It is followed by a review (Chapter 232) on both theoretical and experimental aspects of f-d transitions, a less well known field of lanthanide spectroscopy, yet very important for the design of new optical materials. Chapter 233 describes how confinement effects act on the photophysical properties of lanthanides when they are inserted into nanomaterials, including nanoparticles, nanosheets, nanowires, nanotubes, insulating and semiconductor nanocrystals. The use of lanthanide chelates for biomedical analyses is presented in Chapter 234; long lifetimes of the excited states of lanthanide ions allow the use of time-resolved spectroscopy, which leads to highly sensitive analyses devoid of background effect from the autofluorescence of the samples. The last review (Chapter 235) provides a comprehensive survey of near-infrared (NIR) emitting molecular probes and devices, spanning an all range of compounds, from simple chelates to macrocyclic complexes, heterometallic functional edifices, coordination polymers and other extended structures. Applications ranging from telecommunications to light-emitting diodes and biomedical analyses are assessed.- Provides a comprehensive look at optical spectroscopy and its applications- A volume in the continuing authoritative series which deals with the chemistry, materials science, physics and technology of the rare earth elements

This book was released on 1966 with total page 15 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The intimate connection between an induced absorption transition and a spontaneous emission transition for two levels of rare-earth ion embedded in a crystalline solid is explored experimentally. It is verified experimentally that the fluorescence branching ratios for a given metastable level can be calculated by the use of three parameters characterizing the system. The previously determined parameter sets for a number of rare earth ions doped into Y2O3 and LaF3 single crystals are used to calculate the fluorescence branching ratios of a number of metastable levels. Fluorescence lifetime data are used to predict the radiative quantum efficiencies for these levels. (Author).

Book Synopsis Energy Levels and Predicted Absorption Spectra of Rare-Earth Ions in Rare-Earth Arsenides by :
Download or read book Energy Levels and Predicted Absorption Spectra of Rare-Earth Ions in Rare-Earth Arsenides written by and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 29 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A crystal-field Hamiltonian for octahedral symmetry was used along with free-ion parameters for aqueous solution to fit the reported optical absorption spectra of Er(3+) in ErAs. Predictions showed excellent agreement with reported experimental data at so 74, and 300 K. Consequently, we used an interpolation procedure to predict the crystal-field splittings of the lower multiplets of the rare-earth ions Tb(3+) through Yb(3+) in their respective arsenide compounds. The lowest multiplet energy levels predicted for Tm(3+) and Yb(3+) compare favorably with measurements made by inelastic neutron scattering. In addition, we calculate the absorption spectra for Tb(3+), Dy(3+), Ho(3+), TM(3+), and Yb(3+) in their respective arsenide compounds at 4.2, 77, and 300 K. From these calculations, we show the transitions between the levels of the lowest two J multiplets for each of the ions ... Rare-earth arsenides, Rare- earth spectra.
