Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Electrical Conduction of Thin Air Films: A Thesis Two brass electrodes with end areas of sq. Cm. Were set in partaffin blocks so that an air film of uniform thickness of 002. Cm. Was included between them. These electrodes were incased in an earthed cepper box which was nearly air tight. Dry and dust free air was passed through the box at intervals for several days. It is claimed that a current passed. Between these electroded when the applied voltage was very small and that this current increased. With the applied voltage according to Omns law up to about 80 volts. And much more rapidly for higher voltages. It is stated further that as the air pressure was decreased, the current decreased, finally disappearing at 2 mm. Of mercury. When air was afterward admitted, the current again increased but did not follow the same curve, showing a decided lag. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Physics of Thin Films: Advances in Research and Development, Volume 6 reviews the rapid progress that has been made in research and development concerning the physics of thin films, with emphasis on metallic films. Topics covered include anodic oxide films, thin metal films and wires, and multilayer magnetic films. This volume is comprised of five chapters and begins with a discussion on the dielectric properties and the technique of plasma anodization which are relevant to the applications of anodic oxide films in electronic devices. Conduction, polarization, and dielectric breakdown effects are also considered. The next chapter examines studies on size-dependent electrical conduction in thin metal films and wires, paying particular attention to both classical and quantum size effects and some of the anisotropic characteristics of epitaxial metal films. The reader is then introduced to the optical properties of metal films and interactions in multilayer magnetic films. This text concludes with a chapter that looks at diffusion in metallic films and presents experimental results for phase-forming systems, miscible systems, and lateral diffusion. This monograph will be of value to students and practitioners of physics, especially those interested in thin films.

Book Synopsis Electrical Conduction in Discontinuous Films on an Insulating Substrate by : Joseph E. Dryer
Download or read book Electrical Conduction in Discontinuous Films on an Insulating Substrate written by Joseph E. Dryer and published by . This book was released on 1972 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Experimental and theoretical investigation of the electrical properties of thin films during the nucleation stage of film growth was undertaken. It was found that electrostatic forces in the film can significantly influence the film resistance, nucleation rate and island size. Electrode contact effects were also found to have a large effect in measurements taken across narrow films. Experimentally it was found that a number of films investigated exhibited a reversible switching phenomena, wherein they underwent a substantial increase in conductivity when subjected to large voltages. This high conductivity then persisted to lower voltages and subsequently the film could be converted to its original condition. Previous theories of conduction in discontinuous films were considered and modified to include electrode carrier injection and substrate dielectric polarization.
