Book excerpt: Norman is the clever one of a close-knit Jewish family in the East End of London. Infant prodigy; brilliant barrister; the apple of his parents' eyes . . . until at forty-one he becomes a drug addict, confined to his bedroom, at the mercy of his hallucinations and paranoia. For Norman, his committal to a mental hospital represents the ultimate act of betrayal. For Rbbi Zweck, Norman's father, his son's deterioration is a bitter reminder of his own guilt and failure. Only Bella, the unmarried sister, still in her childhood white ankle socks, can reach across the abyss of pain to bring father and son the elusive peace which they both desperately crave.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The elections for Israel's nineteenth Knesset were held on January 22, 2013. This volume offers an in-depth analysis of Israel's 2013 elections from various perspectives. It presents an up-to-date picture of the complexity of Israeli democracy, and its challenges, achievements, and failures. The chapters in this collection shed light on different facets of Israeli democracy. Yaron Ezrahi provides a sceptical perspective on prospects for democracy. Gayil Talshir explains the party system's slowness to respond to citizen demands and to social movements. Michal Shamir and Keren Weinshall-Margel explore the politics of the right to be elected to the Knesset. Nir Atmor and Chen Friedberg highlight the decline in participation in Knesset elections in the Periphery versus the Center. Assaf Shapira and Gideon Rahat reveal the complexity of inter-party democracy. Dganit Ofek analyses the stability of government coalitions. Gal Levy examines Mizrahi Jews and the Shas Party. Mtanes Shihadeh discusses the voting patterns of Israeli Arabs. Asher Cohen focuses on religious Zionism and the success of the renewed Jewish Home Party. Michal Shamir and Einat Gedalya-Lavy document a gender gap in voting. Elections in Israel 2013 analyses the give-and-take between the public and its leaders that is at the heart of elections. In doing so, it illuminates the role of elections in providing representation for different groups in Israeli society and in giving voice to their political choices.

Book excerpt: Introductory textbooks on American government tell us that the Supreme Court is independent from the elected branches and that independent courts better protect rights than their more deferential counterparts. But are these facts or myths? In this groundbreaking new work, Anna Harvey reports evidence showing that the Supreme Court is in fact extraordinarily deferential to congressional preferences in its constitutional rulings. Analyzing cross-national evidence, Harvey also finds that the rights protections we enjoy in the United States appear to be largely due to the fact that we do not have an independent Supreme Court. In fact, we would likely have even greater protections for political and economic rights were we to prohibit our federal courts from exercising judicial review altogether. Harvey’s findings suggest that constitutional designers would be wise to heed Thomas Jefferson’s advice to “let mercy be the character of the law-giver, but let the judge be a mere machine.&rdquo

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the birth of Sint Maarten on October 10, 2010, the constellation of the parliament of Sint Maarten has changed multiple times. In The Constitution of Sint Maarten, author Hensley G. A. Plantijn offers a look at the country and its laws and regulations. An expert in constitutional law, Plantijn reviews some key points, providing a look at: • the history of the parliament of Sint Maarten; • maintaining transparency in the elections; • election rights and the election ordinance: • what happens after the elections; and • Article 59 of the constitution. Plantijn discusses that free, transparent, and secret elections are the cornerstones of democracy, and that Article 59 is also part of the system of checks and balances in the parliamentary system. He contends the electorate needs to be aware of the relevant laws and regulations regulating the elections and functioning of the representative parliamentary system.

Book excerpt: Based on extensive interviews and archival material, The First Wave tells the story of the opposition in Singapore in its critical first thirty years in Parliament. Democratisation has been described to occur in waves. The first wave of a democratic awakening in post-independence Singapore began with J. B. Jeyaretnam’s victory in the Anson by-election of 1981. That built up to the 1984 general election, the first of many to be called a “watershed”, in which Chiam See Tong was also elected in Potong Pasir. After their successes in 1991, the opposition began dreaming of forming the government. But their euphoria was short-lived. Serious fault lines in the leading Singapore Democratic Party (SDP) rose to the surface almost immediately after the opposition victories of 1991, and the party was wiped out of Parliament by 1997. The opposition spent the next decade experimenting with coalition arrangements, to work their way back to victory.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The election process reflects the essence of the electoral system. The justice of the electoral process can best reflect whether the electoral system is legitimate and democratic. The democratic and legal shortcomings of China's electoral system can be solved by rationalizing and democratizing the electoral process, which is consistent with the realization of justice under the electoral process. In this book, procedural justice is combined with the electoral process to find the conditions and elements needed to achieve more justice in elections. “The electoral system is still based on the political will of the political party to rule, and the electoral system itself has serious legislative problems, which shows that the foundation of China's electoral system has problems. Then China's electoral system cannot truly represent the political voices and political interests of the people in the implementation, and at the same time cannot reflect the fairness of the election in the electoral procedure and the determination of the election results. The People's Congress system and the Political Consultation system simply cannot elect the right representatives who truly represent the interests of the people. The elected government and state power organs are separated from the people's political status, political interests, and development interests in the operation of their duties and the exercise of power.” By analyzing the problems in China's electoral system and election procedures, the book concludes the conditions for the realization of more justice, rationalization, and democratization of China's electoral system and election procedures through procedural justice. The spiritual connotation of procedural justice under the electoral system and election procedures are combined with the traditional Chinese democratic political culture to construct an electoral political culture adapted to the contemporary Chinese political environment, advancing the development of procedural justice in China's electoral system to realize the rationality, legitimacy, and democracy of elections.
