Excerpt: ...saw the natives wash a few grains of gold out of a bucket of river-mud. They had dreamt of Inca treasures, but forgot that also the gold of the Peruvian Children of the Sun " was obtained a grain at a time." We newcomers are not frightened by this method of going to work. When we call to mind that the modern miners on the Rand fetch up hard ore from more than a thousand feet, out of the bowels of the earth, which ore mostly yields no more than 6 to 8 dwts., or not even half an ounce; when we consider that the companies that undertake this work still manage to show large profits, we shall be better able to appreciate the riches of Manicaland. If the old works go down to modern times they still go back in parts to times prehistoric. To the east of our Count Moltke Mine we found old underground buildings just like those in Inyanga. Throughout Manicaland one finds ancient Phoenician gravestones. The religious views of the Manicas are those of the Makalangas. From the Zambesi down to this region of the Upper Pungwe we find one and the same civilisation. And this reaches, as I discovered later, unbroken, down to the Sabi and the Lundi. In fact, I believe that everywhere where one finds the negro washing gold to-day, one may conclude that his first impulse to do so was derived from other races. PHOENICIAN GRAVESTONE IN MANICALAND. The negro himself is much too indolent and lazy to obtain any metal grain by grain through labour, when there is not the prospect of receiving something for his belly in exchange. It would never occur to him to wash or dig for gold, not even to satisfy his own desire for ornaments, if strangers had not come who had offered him something to eat and drink for it. I find it altogether superfluous to follow here every...

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For more than a century Henry Rider Haggard's novel King Solomon's Mines has inspired generations of young men to set forth in search of adventure. But long before Rider Haggard's classic, explorers, theologians and scientists scoured the known world for the source of King Solomon's astonishing wealth. Taking his leads from a mixture of texts including The Septuagint, the earliest known form of the Bible, as well as using geological, geographical and folkloric sources, Tahir Shah sets out in search for Solomon's gold mines. For him the obvious place to look is Ethiopia, in the horn of Africa. On the ensuing journey Shah discovers a massive illegal gold mine, itself like something out of the Old Testament, with thousands of men, women and children digging with their hands. But the hardest leg of the journey is to the 'cursed mountain' of Tullu Wallel where legend says there lies an ancient shaft, once the entrance to Solomon's mines.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the last hundred years, in Africa and the United States, through a variety of religious encounters, some black African societies adopted – or perhaps rediscovered – a Judaic religious identity. African Zion grows out of a joined interest in these diversified encounters with Judaism, their common substrata and divergences, their exogenous or endogenous characteristics, the entry or re-entry of these people into the contemporary world as Jews and the necessity of reshaping the standard accounts of their collective experience. In various loci the bonds with Judaism of black Jews were often forged in the harshest circumstances and grew out of experiences of slavery, exile, colonial subjugation, political ethnic conflicts and apartheid. For the African peoples who identify as Jews and with other Jews, identification with biblical Israel assumes symbolical significance. This book presents the way in which the religious identification of African American Jews and African black Jews – “real”, ideal or imaginary – has been represented, conceptualized and reconfigured over the last century or so. These essays grow out of a concern to understand Black encounters with Judaism, Jews and putative Hebrew/Israelite origins and are intended to illuminate their developments in the medley of race, ethnicity, and religion of the African and African American religious experience. They reflect the geographical and historic mosaic of black Judaism, permeated as it is with different “meanings”, both contemporary and historical.
