Book Synopsis Hamiltonian Mechanical Systems and Geometric Quantization by : Mircea Puta
Download or read book Hamiltonian Mechanical Systems and Geometric Quantization written by Mircea Puta and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume presents various aspects of the geometry of symplectic and Poisson manifolds, and applications in Hamiltonian mechanics and geometric quantization are indicated. Chapter 1 presents some general facts about symplectic vector space, symplectic manifolds and symplectic reduction. Chapter 2 deals with the study of Hamiltonian mechanics. Chapter 3 considers some standard facts concerning Lie groups and algebras which lead to the theory of momentum mappings and the Marsden--Weinstein reduction. Chapters 4 and 5 consider the theory and the stability of equilibrium solutions of Hamilton--Poisson mechanical systems. Chapters 6 and 7 are devoted to the theory of geometric quantization. This leads, in Chapter 8, to topics such as foliated cohomology, the theory of the Dolbeault--Kostant complex, and their applications. A discussion of the relation between geometric quantization and the Marsden--Weinstein reduction is presented in Chapter 9. The final chapter considers extending the theory of geometric quantization to Poisson manifolds, via the theory of symplectic groupoids. Each chapter concludes with problems and solutions, many of which present significant applications and, in some cases, major theorems. For graduate students and researchers whose interests and work involve symplectic geometry and Hamiltonian mechanics.

Book Synopsis Proceedings of the 5th Asia-Pacific Bioinformatics Conference by : David Sankoff
Download or read book Proceedings of the 5th Asia-Pacific Bioinformatics Conference written by David Sankoff and published by Imperial College Press. This book was released on 2007 with total page 391 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: High-throughput sequencing and functional genomics technologies have given us the human genome sequence as well as those of other experimentally, medically, and agriculturally important species, and have enabled large-scale genotyping and gene expression profiling of human populations. Databases containing large numbers of sequences, polymorphisms, structures, and gene expression profiles of normal and diseased tissues are being rapidly generated for human and model organisms. Bioinformatics is thus rapidly growing in importance in the annotation of genomic sequences; the understanding of the interplay among and between genes and proteins; the analysis of genetic variability of species; the identification of pharmacological targets; and the inference of evolutionary origins, mechanisms, and relationships. This proceedings volume contains an up-to-date exchange of knowledge, ideas, and solutions to conceptual and practical issues of bioinformatics by researchers, professionals, and industrial practitioners at the 5th Asia-Pacific Bioinformatics Conference held in Hong Kong in January 2007.

Book Synopsis Topology for Computing by : Afra J. Zomorodian
Download or read book Topology for Computing written by Afra J. Zomorodian and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2005-01-10 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The emerging field of computational topology utilizes theory from topology and the power of computing to solve problems in diverse fields. Recent applications include computer graphics, computer-aided design (CAD), and structural biology, all of which involve understanding the intrinsic shape of some real or abstract space. A primary goal of this book is to present basic concepts from topology and Morse theory to enable a non-specialist to grasp and participate in current research in computational topology. The author gives a self-contained presentation of the mathematical concepts from a computer scientist's point of view, combining point set topology, algebraic topology, group theory, differential manifolds, and Morse theory. He also presents some recent advances in the area, including topological persistence and hierarchical Morse complexes. Throughout, the focus is on computational challenges and on presenting algorithms and data structures when appropriate.
Book Synopsis New Developments in the Visualization and Processing of Tensor Fields by : David H. Laidlaw
Download or read book New Developments in the Visualization and Processing of Tensor Fields written by David H. Laidlaw and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-09-14 with total page 389 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bringing together key researchers in disciplines ranging from visualization and image processing to applications in structural mechanics, fluid dynamics, elastography, and numerical mathematics, the workshop that generated this edited volume was the third in the successful Dagstuhl series. Its aim, reflected in the quality and relevance of the papers presented, was to foster collaboration and fresh lines of inquiry in the analysis and visualization of tensor fields, which offer a concise model for numerous physical phenomena. Despite their utility, there remains a dearth of methods for studying all but the simplest ones, a shortage the workshops aim to address. Documenting the latest progress and open research questions in tensor field analysis, the chapters reflect the excitement and inspiration generated by this latest Dagstuhl workshop, held in July 2009. The topics they address range from applications of the analysis of tensor fields to purer research into their mathematical and analytical properties. They show how cooperation and the sharing of ideas and data between those engaged in pure and applied research can open new vistas in the study of tensor fields.
