The seed thus sown fell on fertile soil, and during some thirtyy ears the Dutch cartoons and emblematical prints, which dealt with the iniquities of the French, and other subjects of interest to both countries, were regularly copied and adapted for the British market, the inscriptions being printed both in Dutch and English. The word earicature had not as yet come into general use. Its first appearance in English literature is in the G'firim'aa Mora/r of Sir Thomas Browne, who exhorts the reader not to expose himself by four footed manners unto monstrous draughts and urn representations.
