Book excerpt: In 1970, a group of people had what many commentators felt was a ludicrous dream, that politics in Northern Ireland ‘should not be dominated by division, but should be about co-operation, partnership and reconciliation'. This dream was to become the Alliance Party of Northern Ireland. In the years since, this ambition to overcome tribal politics for a greater good has been preserved, through good times and bad. This book, the first full record of the development of the Alliance Party, charts that journey of hope and of history.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Ogden Family in America, Elizabethtown Branch, and Their English Ancestry: John Ogden, the Pilgrim, and His Descendants, 1640-1906 The system employed in compiling the genealogical section of this work is believed to be the most approved now ion use, and may readily be understood by a little study. The compilers have added new features which they believe will be found valuable, both in the body of the work and in the index. The ancestral chain, given after the name of each descendant having issue, shows the full line of descent at a glance. Each descendant has his own number. When descendants do not have issue, their full biography will be found connected with their names first mentioned, and in the consecutive small numbers. When a descendant has issue, his or her name is carried forward in the large numbers to the next generation, where the biography is fully given, followed by the list of his or her children. Each female line ends in the book with the grandchildren of an Ogden mother, but the line is continued in the charts, and without numbers. Where correspondents sent in tardy data concerning their families, and after the editors had systematically arranged the regular descendants by consecutive numbers, it became necessary to group the added names in the immediate family line, each child taking the parents number, with a letter of the alphabet annexed. In cases of intermarriage, and where there was issue, the person bearing the name Ogden, or the person first recorded in the regular line of ancestry, is usually the one carried forward to the next generation. To indicate specially the person carried forward, the cross-reference (See No.) is employed. The usual genealogical terms and abbreviations are used throughout the work, viz.: b. - born; cir., circ. - circa, about; d. - died; dau. - daughter; d.s. p. - died without issue; d. y. - died young; m. - married; s. p. -sine prole, without issue; unm. - unmarried; w. - wife; wid. - widow or widower. The editors do not assume that no errors are discoverable in this work. A number of conflicting statements sent by different correspondents, and a disagreement of old records, were often puzzling to the editors; but great care was exercised in settling upon what seemed to them the most authentic and trustworthy. Book excerpt: As the acknowledged founder and philosopher of the Parents' National Educational Union (PNEU), Charlotte Mason was revered by her followers as a saintly Madonna figure. She died in 1923 at the peak of her fame, having achieved mythic status as the Principal of her House of Education and wide recognition after the introduction of her liberal educational programmes into state schools. Yet her early life and heritage remained shrouded in mystery. Drawing upon insubstantiated sources, the official biography released in 1960 confused rather than illuminated Charlotte's background, contributing to several enduring misapprehensions. In her new and definitive biography, Margaret Coombs draws on years of research to reveal for the first time thehidden backdrop to Charlotte Mason's life, tracing the lives of her previously undiscovered Quaker ancestors to offer a better understanding of the roots of her personality and ideas. Coombs charts her rise from humble beginnings as an orphaned pupil-teacher to great heights as a lady of culture venerated within prestigious PNEU circles, illustrating how with determination she surmounted the Victorian age's rigid class divisions to achieve her educational vision. A thorough analysis of Charlotte Mason's educational influences and key friendships challenges longstanding notions about the roots of her philosophy, offering a more realistic picture of her life and work than ever accomplished before. With a growing following in the USA and Australia, Charlotte Mason's ideas have a clear relevance to the continuing educational debate today. Admirers of her philosophy and scholars of the history of education will fi nd much to enthral and instruct them in these pages.

In an effort to raise awareness on the effects of globalisation on language learning and teaching, the Applied Linguistics Association of Australia (ALAA) devoted its 31st Annual Congress to this theme. This volume represents a collection of papers by academics in Australia, South-East Asia, New Zealand, Europe and North America, which synthesize language learning and teaching theories and current research to present the views of applied linguists and language educators on a variety of issues with regards to the tensions that globalisation and internationalisation bring on language and languages. A total of twenty-two articles discuss issues related to the status of the ELT profession in a globalised world, issues of ESL teaching and language assessment, the ever increasing use of ICTs for foreign language learning, and the effects of globalisation on minority languages. This collection of articles attempts to integrate theoretical issues, research findings, and practical applications on different aspects of TESOL to provide academics, researchers, students and language educators with a discussion of the current state of affairs in the field of applied linguistics with regards to globalisation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Re/reading the Past "is concerned with the discourses of history, from the complementary perspectives of Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) and Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL). The papers in the book stress the discursive construction of the past, focussing on the different social narratives which compete for official acknowledgement. Issues of collective and cultural memory are addressed, reflecting the "linguistic turn" in the Social Sciences. The book covers a range of discourses, interpreting texts from popular culture to academic discourse including the construction and evaluation of past events in a variety of places around the world. It is especially timely in its focus on the construction of time and value in a post-colonial world where history discourses are central to on-going processes of reconciliation, debates on war crimes, and the issues of amnesty and restitution. As such the book fills a significant gap in interdisciplinary debates as well as in register and genre analysis, and will be of general interest to historians, political scientists and discourse analysts as well as students and teachers of ESP (English for Specific Purposes) and EAP (English for Academic Purposes).
