This book was released on 1987 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis is a descriptive study of the emergence of a new technology. This examination deals with early experimentation of electronic monitoring devices within the behavioral sciences setting, and traces its development and use up to the current period. Environmental factors which have helped electronic monitoring shift from an experimental model to a working tool within corrections are also examined. Following a review of the available literature, issues and controversies surrounding electronic monitoring are explored. The data utilized in this study was obtained through two primary sources. The first was a literature review in which numerous sources where considered in order to trace the emergence and development of electronic monitoring within the United States. Secondly, legislation was examined in order to support thesis arguments. Based on the results of the review of the literature and legislation, two conclusions were reached. First, the use of electronic monitoring will probably increase the efficiency of the corrections system employing it. This efficiency may increase prison and jail populations. Secondly, this new technology will continue to grow within the field of corrections, and risks can be expected, since many new programs are coming on-line before any scientific study on electronic monitoring can be conducted and evaluated.

Book excerpt: Electronic monitoring of offenders in the criminal justice system is a trend that continues to expand in the U.S. and abroad. The history of the technology is reviewed as is the prevalence and usage of EM systems on a global scale. Specifically, this document examines the commonly held pros and cons to EM use in the criminal justice system and potentially relevant theoretical perspectives to support justifying EM's existence and use. Electronic monitoring programs from the United States, Sweden, and the United Kingdom are examined to understand programmatic differences in theoretical assumptions, structure, and monitoring. In conclusion, this document identifies a series of questions and issues, absent from the research published to date, which may provide further understanding of the technology and its role within the criminal justice arena.

This book was released on 2019-02-14 with total page 1435 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Experts from across all industrial-organizational (IO) psychology describe how increasingly rapid technological change has affected the field. In each chapter, authors describe how this has altered the meaning of IO research within a particular subdomain and what steps must be taken to avoid IO research from becoming obsolete. This Handbook presents a forward-looking review of IO psychology's understanding of both workplace technology and how technology is used in IO research methods. Using interdisciplinary perspectives to further this understanding and serving as a focal text from which this research will grow, it tackles three main questions facing the field. First, how has technology affected IO psychological theory and practice to date? Second, given the current trends in both research and practice, could IO psychological theories be rendered obsolete? Third, what are the highest priorities for both research and practice to ensure IO psychology remains appropriately engaged with technology moving forward?

Book excerpt: " OTS is an electronic monitoring technology consisting of hardware, such as an ankle bracelet, used for collecting Global Positioning System (GPS) signals to determine an individual's location, and software for analyzing data collected from the hardware device. While demand for GPS-based electronic monitoring devices has increased, there are currently no standards that OTS devices are required to meet. In 2009, NIJ initiated development of a voluntary OTS standard and companion guide, which is expected to be published no later than March 2016. GAO was asked to review NIJ's approach for developing the OTS standard. This report examines the extent to which (1) NIJ collaborated with stakeholders in developing the standard, and (2) the standard and guide address stakeholder needs and challenges. GAO analyzed NIJ's draft OTS standard, companion guide, and standard development process. To obtain perspectives on the standard development process and OTS needs and challenges, GAO interviewed stakeholders including NIJ officials, practitioners and experts who developed the standard, criminal justice and victims' associations, manufacturers, and officials from a nongeneralizable sample of 10 criminal justice agencies m

Book excerpt: This book offers a systematic, sociological and penological exploration of the most up-to-date uses of electronic tagging (also known as electronic monitoring). With increasingly overcrowded prisons, electronic tagging has been proposed as an alternative form of punishment, and interest in this topic is growing throughout Europe. Current debates and research have often been limited to policy evaluation and effectiveness, whereas Electronic Monitoring examines the brand of punishment from a social-science perspective. This book explores the uses and history of electronic tagging, and draws upon the work of the Dutch criminologist Willem Nagel to reflect upon this form of punishment by examining its functions and dysfunctions. It speaks to those interested in criminal justice reform, surveillance, penology and penal innovation and probation.
Book Synopsis Crime, Law and Justice in New Zealand by : Greg Newbold
Download or read book Crime, Law and Justice in New Zealand written by Greg Newbold and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-06-03 with total page 515 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Crime, Law and Justice in New Zealand examines the recent crime trends and the social, political, and legal changes in New Zealand from the end of the twentieth century to the present. Serving as the only New Zealand–specific criminal justice text, this book takes a direct look at what is unique about the country’s criminal justice system and recent crime trends. Crime rates peaked in the early 1990s and have fallen since. Newbold considers why this happened through factors such as economy, ethnic composition, changing cultural trends, and legislative developments in policing and criminal justice. He unpacks various types of crime separately—violent crime, property crime, drug crime, gang crime, organised crime, etc.—and examines each in terms of the various complex factors affecting it, using illustrative examples from recent high-profile cases. The cover photo for Crime, Law and Justice in New Zealand was taken by Jono Rotman.

Download or read book The Electronic Monitoring of Adult Offenders written by Great Britain: National Audit Office and published by The Stationery Office. This book was released on 2006-02 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Electronic monitoring of a curfew has become an integral part of the criminal justice system and its use has increased from 9,000 cases in 1999-2000 to 53,000 in 2004-05. This report examines its cost effectiveness and covers: whether breaches of curfew are detected and dealt with promptly; the cost compared to custody; the impact on the offending behaviour. The main conclusion is that electronic tagging does offer value for money but effectiveness is undermined by delays in fitting tags and delays in responding to breaches of curfew.
