Since 1977 when varroa jacobsoni entered the federal repiblic of Germany it has already invaled greece, Italy and France. within a few years the entire mainland of the EC will tis problem. Because it is difficult to demostrate the initial infestation of a honeybee colony with varroa, it is almost impossible to obtain a reliable survey of the distribution of this mite. Many more countries may be infested at this moment. Therefore control measures have to be taken even before Varroa mites are found. The death of honeybee colonies follows within 3-4 years after infestation. This stage has been in the federal republic of Germany and Greece.

Book excerpt: Aspects concerning the bionomics of the parasitic honey bee brood mite, Varroa jacobsoni Oudemans were investigated. Mite mortality is great during the winter season when the host colony is not rearing brood, appearing to be independent of the mortality of its host. In winter period, no significant association between the number of dead mites and the number of dead adult workers was observed. It appears that the mites are dying by factors other than the host death. Drifting drones facilitate the horizontal transmission of Varroa jacobsoni mites between colonies, especially in modern beekeeping in which managed colonies are kept similarly hived and close together. A great tendency of drones to drift among colonies was observed. A significant correlation was found in the rate of mites per drones and the number of drones in the colonies. It was concluded that the transmission of Varroa jacobsoni among colonies via drifting drones is a common mechanism for the transmission of mites. The relationship between mite load and the size of the honey bee brood host was investigated. The data showed significant statistical differences between the infestation rate of the mite that is, number of female mites per infested pupae and the size of the worker brood nest of its host. With a high number of worker cells in the colony, the mite load is lowered. Feeding activities of V. jacobsoni causes a great impact on A. mellifera colony survival not only through physical damage caused by this mite but also through transmission of various entomopathogenic agents responsible for the outbreak of secondary diseases in the colony. I concluded that mites fed on adult bees during summer time. It appears that the frequency of mite feeding on adult bees at this time is low, suggesting that probably the mite feeds only for maintenance and survival rather than for reproduction.

Book excerpt: Changes in honey bee, 'Apis mellifera' L., worker fitness were determined after feeding caged, newly-emerged bees one of eight pollen diets. Freshly-collected pollen was compared with pollen that had been stored for one year at -30C in an oxygen-reduced atmosphere. Development of hypopharyngeal glands and ovaries was found to be correlated with the amount of protein consumed, and for some diets, protein appeared to be allocated between ovaries and glands differentially. Storing pollen for one year did not affect gland or ovary development. A second experiment was conducted to determine whether honey bee colonies responded to changes in the nutritional quality of their stored pollen reserve. Colony pollen reserves were manipulated either quantitatively or qualitatively, at high and low levels. Foraging rates, and the weight and species composition of pollen loads were determined. Colonies responded to a decrease in the quantity or quality of their pollen reserve by increasing the proportion of pollen foragers, without altering the overall foraging rate. Inexperienced foragers collected heavier loads and more species of pollen per foraging trip, and specialized on larger, more proteinaceous pollen than experienced foragers. Colonies appear to respond to deficiencies in stored protein levels by increasing the gross amount of pollen returned to the colony, rather than by specializing on pollen having a higher protein content. Colony-level responses to deficiencies in stored protein may be manifested by an increase in the ratio of naive to experienced foragers. Foragers receive colony-level feedback about pollen quality in order to match pollen intake with the protein need of the colony. In a third study, pollen-based foraging cues were evaluated using two-choice bioassays in a flight and rearing room. The importance of pollen grain size, protein content, handling time and odour were assessed as foraging cues for worker bees. Pollen odour was the dominant cue foragers us.

Book excerpt: The adverse effects of developmental nutritional stress on adult function are well-documented in vertebrates, but poorly studied in invertebrates. Our study examined the effects of larval pollen-stress in one of the world’s most important pollinators, Apis mellifera, the European honey bee. As honey bee workers age, they pass through important jobs in their colony in a process called temporal polyethism. Fundamental to colony health and population numbers is one of the first jobs a worker will do, nursing, or the feeding and general caring for of young larvae. To understand how larvae reared in a pollen-deprived environment affected nursing behavior, we divided natural colonies into three subunits to rear larvae under conditions of either abundant or limited pollen supply. We then observed focal workers for nursing behavior and hypopharyngeal gland growth (an important gland that nurses use to secrete “brood food”) during approximately the first three weeks of their adult life. Pollen-stressed workers had hypopharyngeal glands that were smaller than their unstressed cohorts’ in the middle of the typical period of nursing and followed a significantly different timeline of growth. Pollen-stressed workers also spent less mean time inspecting larvae in brood cells, but this difference was not statistically significant and interpretation would likely benefit from a larger sample size. As widespread pollinators in both commercial agriculture and natural settings, honey bees provide an invaluable ecological and economical service to our global society. In recent years, honey bee populations have been declining in part due to environmental stressors that are a result of food stress in colonies. This study provides insight into how a crucial honey bee behavior may be affected by such stress using honey bees reared under and living in a natural social setting.
