The condition required for validity of the quasisteady approximation of governing flow equations is that the ratio of diffusion time to flow time should be small. It is also shown that criteria for validity of the quasi- steady approximation of the Orr-Sommerfeld equation are based on modifications of this ratio, and are not nearly as stringent. Examples of heated wedge flows in water that are presented and discussed show the profound effect of even slowly varying unsteadiness on both laminar boundary-layer flow and its stability. (Author).

Three problems are investigated: (1) Uniform flow with heat addition in various bounded regions; (2) unsteady cylindrical disturbances produced by a sudden energy release; (3) compressible boundary layer growth with volume heat addition inside the boundary layer. The first problem is steady two dimensional flows with simply shaped heating regions. In the second part, the linear and non-linear behavior of a cylindrical disturbance produced by a sudden energy release is studied. In the linearized analysis, the characteristic method is used. Finally, the effect of heat addition on the boundary layer growth of compressible, laminar, transitional and turbulent boundary layer flow over a given body is studied.

Book excerpt: Numerical solutions are presented for the unsteady compressible laminar boundary-layer flow developing within a centered expansion wave for two wall thermal conditions, namely, isothermal and adiabatic. The solutions are obtained using Howarth's transformation, a similarity transformation via one- parameter groups, and a series expansion. The expansion in terms of a dimensionless similarity variable is carried up to second-order terms and it improves Hall's zero-order solution for the temperature distribution in the boundary layer. It is shown that both velocity and temperature boundary layers grow rapidly behind the expansion wavefront but attenuate further down stream. If the wall temperature is held at the undisturbed temperature, the heat transfer occurs from the wall to the expanding gas. The rate of heat transfer increases from the wavefront to approximately x =0.35 behind the wave where maximum heat transfer is observed, x being a dimensionless distance from the expansion wavefront. The isothermal wall temperature is found to be higher than the adiabatic wall temperature by a factor of (1 + 0.335x).
