This book was released on 2013 with total page 67 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We study a large sample of product recalls that include a wide variety of products such as consumer products, food, drug, medical devices, and automobiles and show that such product quality failures have significant adverse value consequences for the recalling firms. Our analysis sheds light on factors that affect the incidence of product recalls, the financial and operating consequences for the recalling firms, and the actions taken by them in response to the recall. We also study the value implications for the rivals and suppliers - which enable us to draw important inferences about product market linkages. We find that the financial condition, competitive position, coordination costs, incentives of workers and management, and monitoring environment impact recall likelihood. Recall events result in significant costs for key suppliers which are further exacerbated if they have made larger relationship-specific investments. Further, instead of benefiting from the recalling firms' problems, industry rivals suffer adverse contagion effects, perhaps due to anticipated regulation and diminished perceptions about the product category. We find that a larger investment in brand capital alleviates the negative wealth effects for the recalling firms. Finally, using a difference-in-differences approach, we find that recalling firms suffer sales declines and increase advertising expenditures - consequences and policy changes that we further show are not just due to a continuation of a differential trend from before the recall event and, therefore, directly attributable to the recall.
Book Synopsis Global Supply Chain Quality Management by : Barbara B. Flynn
Download or read book Global Supply Chain Quality Management written by Barbara B. Flynn and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2014-11-21 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While there is substantial research surrounding manufacturing and design-related product hazards, little has been written about supply chain product hazards and how they impact supply chain quality management. Filling this need, Global Supply Chain Quality Management: Product Recalls and Their Impact draws together key insights and research findings from a global research project on product safety and recalls. The book presents detailed case studies of six extended global supply chains within three industries: toys, food, and pharmaceuticals. These case studies cover U.S. companies with supply chains that extend into China and provide the perspectives of both U.S. and Chinese executives. It includes coverage of several highly publicized product recalls, including Ford Pinto, Extra Strength Tylenol, melamine-tainted milk, Mattel, and Toyota. Presenting detailed examples of both poor and best practices, the text supplies firsthand accounts from key players in well-known product recalls. It outlines an event study methodology that can help readers determine the true financial impact of a product recall announcement. It also describes how to conduct controlled experiments to determine the effect of various recall strategies on consumers. The book describes how alternative product recall strategies can influence consumers' perception of your organization's corporate social legitimacy as well as their future purchasing behaviors. Although the text focuses on product quality within the supply chain, it also sheds light on other sources of product hazards—sharing a wide-ranging perspectives and current methodologies.
Book Synopsis Product Recalls Conceptualized as Social Dilemmas by : Skyler Masaji King
Download or read book Product Recalls Conceptualized as Social Dilemmas written by Skyler Masaji King and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 82 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This dissertation explores the product recall decision. I first posit that the product recall decision can be viewed as a social dilemma where short-term individual interests and long-term collective interests are at odds. Consistent with this reasoning, Study 1 finds that the product recall decision can be viewed as a social dilemma. Building on these findings, Studies 2-4 explore how factors found to influence cooperation in social dilemmas impact the product recall decision. Study 2 explores how decision makers' time-horizons, CFC, and perception of the decision affect their willingness to recall a product. Results show that decision makers' time-horizon does not affect one's willingness to recall a product. However, CFC effects recall intentions through ethical perceptions of the decision. When decision makers' CFC is high and when the decision is perceived as being an ethical decision, willingness to recall a product increases. Study 3 explores how group size affects willingness to recall a product and study 4 explores how anonymity and product defect severity affect willingness to recall. Study 3 and 4 replicates the effects of CFC and ethical perceptions of the decision on willingness to recall, however, group size, anonymity, and product defect severity did not affect willingness to recall.

Book Synopsis Handbook of Research on Retailing by : Katrijn Gielens
Download or read book Handbook of Research on Retailing written by Katrijn Gielens and published by Edward Elgar Publishing. This book was released on 2018-08-31 with total page 481 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The advent of e-commerce and the rise of hard discounters have put severe pressure on traditional retail chains. Boundaries are blurring: traditional brick & mortar players are expanding their online operations and/or setting up their own discount banners, while the power houses of online retail are going physical, and hard discounters get caught up in the Wheel of Retailing. Even successful companies cannot sit back and rest, but need to prepare for the next wave of change. In the face of this complexity, it is all the more important to take stock of current knowledge, based on insights and experience from leading scholars in the field. What do we know from extant studies, and what are the ensuing best practices? What evolutions are ahead, and will current recipes still work in the future? This Handbook sheds light on these issues.
Book Synopsis The Crisis of Food Brands by : Martin K. Hingley
Download or read book The Crisis of Food Brands written by Martin K. Hingley and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2016-03-16 with total page 383 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Food and agribusiness is one of the fastest changing global markets; change that is driven by technology, developments in manufacturing and supply, and a growing consumer engagement. The success of the agri-food industry and many of our household brand names will depend on how much you understand about these changes and the extent to which you can deliver secure and competitive products in the face of growing expectations about food safety and quality, as well as changing attitudes about the environment, human diet and nutrition, and animal welfare. The Crisis of Food Brands offers perspectives on many key aspects of these changes including the role of business, policy-makers, and the media in communicating with and engaging stakeholders about: o relevant and dynamic models of risk and crisis management; o the value of innovative and, sometimes controversial, food systems; o their buying behaviour and attitudes to movements such as organic and fair trade; o how and where we source and buy our food now (and in the future). The quality of the original research that underpins this book and the imagination and practicality with which the authors address its applications for the industry is first rate. Anyone with responsibility for marketing food, communicating about the food industry, or engaging with consumers will find this an important source of ideas and inspiration.

Book Synopsis Consumer attitudes to food quality products by : Marija Klopčič
Download or read book Consumer attitudes to food quality products written by Marija Klopčič and published by Springer. This book was released on 2013-03-12 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Quality foods, such as traditional, EU certified, organic and health claimed are part of a growing trend towards added value in the agri-food sector. In these foods, elements of production, processing, marketing, agro-tourism and speciality stores are combined. Paramount above all is the link to the consumer, which requires a personal approach. At this point, one enters the field of food consumer science. This can be seen as a hybrid of two distinct sciences. On one hand, there is the 'hardware' component, i.e. the science of food. On the other hand, the 'software' component, related to the science of consumers' preferences and behaviour. In animal science, nearly all attention is given to the 'hardware' aspect. However, to build a successful business in quality food products, the 'software' aspect is essential. This publication devotes special attention to the consumer and gives insight into an area of knowledge still very much in development. It is intended to enhance understanding of the complex relationships in the route from products to consumers and offers practical solutions in this field. This publication includes review articles covering basic aspects of food consumer science and research trends in the field, and a series of country reports and articles on relevant studies related to the topic, with emphasis on Southern Europe.
