Book excerpt: Landscape scale disturbance in forested source water regions can accelerate the transfer of fine sediment and associated phosphorus (P) to receiving streams and degrade water quality in downstream environments for human and ecosystem use. The abiotic controls of deposited riverbed and suspended fine sediment on the form and mobility of P were examined in an oligotrophic gravel-bed river undergoing cumulative downstream sediment pressures from disturbance (e.g., harvesting, wildfire and sewage effluent) in Alberta, Canada. The spatial distribution of particulate P forms (NAIP, AP, OP) and major element composition were assessed across six study sites in the Crowsnest River that receive tributary inputs from watersheds that have experienced a range of landscape disturbance types. Pore-water soluble reactive P (SRP) concentration profiles within the gravel-bed were measured with pore-water peepers. Diffusive fluxes from the sediment to the water column were related to landscape disturbances, substrate properties, dissolved oxygen concentrations, and fine sediment sorption characteristics. A series of batch experiments were conducted to determine the Equilibrium Phosphate Concentration (EPC0) and evaluate the potential of fine sediment to influence P concentrations in the overlying water column. Results of the study demonstrated varying sensitivities to landscape disturbances due to the heterogeneous nature of gravel-bed substrate and morphology. Macro- to micro-scale processes influenced the form and mobility of P, however fine sediments in the riverbed irrespective of landscape disturbance demonstrated the potential of the riverbed to release SRP to the water column. Sewage inputs had the greatest impact on SRP fluxes from the riverbed and bioavailability of P in suspended sediments. The most bioavailable form of particulate P (NAIP) was associated with metal oxide and organic carbon coatings on sediment. Lower dissolved oxygen concentrations are likely responsible for driving the release of P from redox sensitive metals. Bioavailable particulate P and the release of SRP can influence in-stream water quality and ecological communities, and over longer time scales can propagate effects downstream to reservoirs and impact drinking water supplies. This thesis provides new knowledge regarding the impacts of both landscape disturbance and site-specific abiotic processes that influence the form and mobility of P in a gravel-bed river during the biologically sensitive period of summer low flow.

Book excerpt: This technical note examines equilibrium phosphorus processes and sorption characteristics for sediments collected from the Minnesota River, immediately upstream from its confluence with the Upper Mississippi River (UMR), and from Lake Pepin of the UMR, located approximately 70 miles downstream of the Minnesota River inflow. Suspended sediments can play an important role in the regulation of nutrient dynamics and primary productivity in aquatic systems by influencing nutrient concentrations in the water column through equilibrium processes (adsorption- desorption) between solid and aqueous phases (Meyer 1979, Mayer and Gloss 1980, Froelich 1988). In particular, adsorption-esorption reactions may be the primary means of controlling phosphorus (P) concentrations in the water column for water bodies receiving high suspended sediment loadings via the watershed. Since phosphorus is generally an important nutrient for phytoplankton growth in freshwater systems, there is a need to examine and understand phosphorus equilibrium processes and fluxes in relation to soluble phosphorus concentrations and overall primary productivity. Very little information exists that links watershed-derived suspended sediment transport to phosphorus adsorption/ desorption processes and to the regulation of soluble phosphorus concentrations in aquatic systems.

Book excerpt: The research work contained in this report concerns the transport of total phosphorus and orthophosphorus to Lake Erie. The various calculational techniques for analyzing data obtained from Lake Erie tributaries are presented. These calculations were developed to determine the source of the phosphorus and to quantify the input to the lake. The source and quantity of phosphorus devised for Lake Erie. The first section of this report presents the basic concepts, mass balances (that applied to the water and that applied to the phosphorus), and force relationships. The second section of this report concerns the quantification of total phosphorus input to Lake Erie river basins and shortline sources. A computational method called the Flow Interval Method was devised to permit the calculaion of total phosphorus influx without measuring the total phosphorus concentration for the entire year. Another important aspect of reducing total phosphorus influx from river basins is the understanding of the transport processes in rivers. The third section of this report concerns the transport of total phosphorus during storm events. The fourth section of this report presents the derivation of the necessary equations used to calculate the distance of the travel density function form measurements of the water flow rate and the total phosphorus concentrations at a point in the stream.

Book excerpt: Over a 3-year period (1994-96), suspended seston and phosphorus (P) dynamics were examined in the Upper Mississippi River (UMR) and naturally impounded Lake Pepin, with special attention to external and internal P loading processes that may be contributing to deteriorating water quality conditions. The Minnesota River accounted for most of the annual and summer suspended seston (^81 %) and total phosphorus (^44 %) load, while the Metropolitan Wastewater Treatment Plant (Metro Plant) accounted for ^18 % of annual soluble reactive phosphorus (SRP) loading to the UMR. External loading during the summer of suspended seston, total P, and SRP to Lake Pepin averaged ^30,000/m2/day, and ^60 mg/m2/day, respectively. The lake retained a substantial portion of the summer suspended seston load and was also a sink for total P. While total P concentrations generally declined in Lake Pepin from headwaters to outflow, SRP exhibited a trend of increasing concentration from headwaters to outflow with net SRP export during the summer. These contrasting patterns in total P and SRP indicated the occurrence of internal P loading and/or transformations in the water column of P from particulate to soluble phases. Internal diffusive P flux from profundal sediments, estimated from laboratory incubation systems under different temperature and redox conditions, averaged ^7.5 mg/m2/day during the summer under predominately oxic conditions over all years. Although this oxic rate was high relative to other eutrophic lakes, it accounted for

Book excerpt: Sediments play an important role in the overall equilibrium conditions in eutrophic surface water, which is determined by the nutrient concentration mainly Phosphorus (P). Sorption tests were performed for sediments from Lake Caron and Huron River. By taking the originally sorbed P (S 0) into consideration, the experimental data were fit to the modified Langmuir and Freundlich isotherms. The modified Langmuir isotherm was used to obtain the maximum sorption capacity (S max) as its values varied between 100 to 5000 mg-P/kg. Sediments might act as a source or sink of P. The equilibrium concentration at zero sorption (EPC 0) between the water column and sediments was calculated, for the sediments from Lake Caron showed a wide range from 0.043-0.31 mgP/L, and the sediments might act as potential source of Pinto the water, except for CS3 which might act as a sink. For the Huron River EPC 0 values are in the range of 0.15-0.18 mg-P/L. The adsorption kinetics were studied and modeled as the power function, and the half life time of P by the sediments was determined. Soluble reactive phosphorus (SRP) concentration changes in the water by resuspension was observed over a period of 4 days. More analysis for SRP changes was performed, to included the effect of sediments to solution ratio, resuspension and the background electrolyte. The effect of particle size fraction on the sorption models for CS3 was evaluated and S max was 5800 mg-P/kg for a particle size less than 38?m and 910 mg-P/kg for the particle size of 75?m -2mm, which indicates the smaller the particles size the more the ability to adsorb P.
