Unfortunately, incivility threatens the sense of belonging in nursing students. Purpose: The purpose of this cross-sectional study is to determine the relationship between staff nurse incivility and undergraduate nursing students’ sense of belonging in nursing school, describe the presence of incivility in minority undergraduate nursing students, and determine how semester in the nursing program and weight are associated with incivility and sense of belonging. Baumeister and Leary’s (1995) need to belong theory was chosen as the framework for this study. Methods: A convenience sample of 123 junior and senior nursing students from two nursing schools in New Mexico were recruited to participate in this study. The concepts were measured using the Uncivil Behavior in Clinical Nursing Education (UBCNE) and Sense of Belonging in Nursing School (SBNS) surveys. Correlation coefficient, descriptive statistics, Fisher r-to-z transformation, 95% confidence intervals were calculated. Results: One-hundred and twenty-three pre-licensure undergraduate nursing students completed the study, resulting in 44.7% response rate. The results showed a statistically significant, inverse correlation between the UBCNE and SBNS. However, there was no association between staff nurse incivility and undergraduate nursing student sense of belonging among the cohort. Of the minority undergraduate nursing students, American Indian or Alaskan Native students reported the highest mean frequency of incivility. There was no significant difference noted between correlations based on level in the program or body mass index. Discussion: This was the first study to assess the relationship between staff nurse incivility and undergraduate nursing students’ sense of belonging in nursing school. As the experience of incivility increased in the clinical environment, the overall sense of belonging in nursing school decreased. Yet, staff nurse incivility was not associated with sense of belonging in the cohort, highlighting the impact of acceptance in the students’ social group. Conclusion: This study reported the relationship between incivility and sense of belonging in the nursing profession. The findings of this study may be useful for nursing educators, nursing students, staff nurses, and healthcare organizations who facilitate clinical experiences for nursing students.

The student-staff nurse relationship not only impacts students’ learning outcomes, but also students’ desire to remain in the program, and ultimately, the profession. Given the importance of these interactions to student learning outcomes and the fact that the staff nurses may not even perceive that these interactions are part of the learning cycle, it is time to examine this phenomenon more closely. This study used a qualitative descriptive approach to answer the question: How do staff nurses perceive their contributions to nursing students’ learning during teacher-led practica? Interview transcripts of nine staff nurses’ interviews within a Northern British Columbia regional hospital were analyzed. The findings show that nurses’ interactions with nursing students is complicated. Nurses wanted to train up their future colleagues but felt a significant burden of responsibility when having students on the wards. The sense of burden for the staff nurses was influence by several factors: nurses’ experience of the practice environment, their experience of the clinical instructor, their experiences of the students themselves, and their understanding of their own contributions to nursing students’ learning. Despite the multiple factors that contributed to the staff nurses’ sense of burden, they remained willing to support learning. The studies were retrieved from an online database using the search terms “academic partnership,” “clinical partnership,” “nurse education,” “collaboration” and “clinical model.” The findings from the literature review were grouped according to common themes. Findings: Academic-clinical partnerships were shown to result in student, staff and faculty satisfaction. They were also found to make the clinical learning experience more valuable and realistic. Conclusion: The findings suggested that academic-clinical partnerships positively influence nursing student, staff and faculty satisfaction. They also afforded a valuable and contextual learning experience. Relevance to Nursing Education: As the nursing profession continues to evolve parallel to the needs of modern-day healthcare, organizations such as the Institute of Medicine have called for a transformation in the delivery of nursing education. Academic-clinical partnerships have been identified as a means to provide more satisfactory and comprehensive learning experiences.

The complexity of healthcare settings in the United States necessitates a coordinated approach to patient care in order to meet the divergent needs of its citizens. Healthcare students and professionals need to be prepared to work collaboratively and communicate proficiently and effectively. The theory of relational coordination states that, in a well-functioning organization, members of the healthcare team engage in frequent, timely, accurate, and problem-solving communication and have high levels of shared knowledge, shared goals, and mutual respect. This descriptive, exploratory study, conducted between May 2012 and December 2013, utilized Gittell's relational coordination instrument to explore the relational coordination experienced by nursing students at several levels in their program in two pre-licensure schools of nursing in Massachusetts, which included a community college offering an associate degree in nursing and a university offering a bachelor of science degree in nursing. Participants were a convenience sample from each of these institutions. Nursing students and faculty in these programs completed the study survey. Data were collected through Survey Monkey. An analysis of variance and thematic review were used for data analysis. The analysis of variance performed to analyze student nurse reports of relational coordination with other student nurses, unlicensed assistive personnel, staff nurses, and nursing faculty in traditional clinical hospital settings revealed significant results. Post-hoc analyses revealed that student nurses in the traditional clinical setting reported lower relational coordination scores with staff nurses than those in the dedicated educational unit (p = .015). This study indicates that both nursing faculty and student nurses are experiencing ineffective communication in some clinical environments. Since student nurses in this study reported that increased time and familiarity with staff improved communication and relationships, nurse educators should develop educational models that increase that opportunity.
