Book excerpt: Increased use of technology in the classroom has the potential of helping students shift from the role of passive learners to engaged participants in their own learning. The purpose of this study was to determine if the use of technology tools in 7th and 8th grade science activities would increase student motivation and understanding of science. The literature review found that, when used effectively, technology can have a profound impact on learning and student's understanding of content can increase. This study used both quantitative and qualitative research methods, in addition to incorporated action research to inform classroom decisions about the benefits of using technology. Student survey responses provided insight into the types of technology-based activities students perceived best supported their learning, and the types of activities they felt increased their motivation. Student interviews and pre-and post-assessments were analyzed to determine if student understanding of science content increased due to the use of technology-based activities. The findings determined that students preferred interactive technology activities where they could share their ideas with their classmates. Students agreed that the technology tools they used in science were exciting and the best learning experiences utilized computers or technology. As a result of participation in inquiry-based technology activities, findings for 7th grade students indicated there was no significant increase in science content knowledge; however, the 8th grade findings showed a significant gain in content knowledge. To broaden the scope of this research, it is suggested that future studies be conducted on the impact technology has on student achievement and attitudes toward learning science.

Over the past few decades policy initiatives have catalyzed revisions on how and when students are placed into their first Algebra course. Concerns over equity in access and the national goal of fostering a competent STEM workforce have motivated efforts to place more students into Algebra earlier. Students who are not selected into Algebra by the eighth grade, for example, face a blocked pathway to advanced math learning among other outcomes. Thus, efforts have predominantly focused on increasing Algebra course placement in eighth grade, a developmentally sensitive time that carries weight in shaping adolescent students' beliefs, feelings, and goals for mathematics. While an extensive body of research has taken advantage of changing Algebra course placement policies to examine effects on a variety of student outcomes, research has yet to examine how course placement influences students' motivation for mathematics and general states of affect (achievement emotions) in mathematics classrooms.This dissertation seeks to initiate our understanding of how math course placement relates to students' beliefs and feelings about mathematics by examining student reports of beliefs, goals, and achievement emotions within their mathematics classrooms during middle school. The studies presented here forth aim to make a unique contribution to this literature by examining the relation between middle school math course placement and students' motivation for mathematics and affect in middle school mathematics classrooms---and further, relating changes in each to subsequent mathematics achievement. To my knowledge, these studies are the first to reveal information about Algebra course placement and students' motivation and affect as research to date has examined the effects, influences, and associations of Algebra course placement on student cognitive and achievement outcomes.The first study examines the changes in students' goals, expectancy, and value for mathematics for students placed in eighth grade Algebra relative to peers placed in lower-level courses. This study extends analyses to examine whether the changes in students' beliefs and goals in eighth grade relate to changes in achievement. The second part of this dissertation examines student-centered achievement emotions and affect as it surfaces within math classrooms. Achievement emotions and affect carries a significant contribution to the development of motivation and subsequent learning and experiences. For example, a student's experience will inform anticipated emotions for future engagements, which will have an influence on that students' motivation by affecting the choice of activities that he or she chooses to engage in. In Study 2 I examine changes in students' achievement emotions (specifically, anxiety) and general states of positive or negative affect for students placed in eighth grade Algebra relative to peers placed in lower-level courses. In this study, as well as the third study, positive affect is characterized as students reporting feeling excited, interested, enthusiastic, and/or happy in their mathematics class. Negative affect is characterized by students' reports of feeling irritated, bored, and/or exhausted in their mathematics class. The third study examines the association between students' self-rated achievement emotions and affect and mathematics achievement as measured by a state standardized exam.The three studies in this dissertation aim to make a first contribution in the area of math course placement and adolescent motivation for mathematics by relaying information about how math course placement and changes in beliefs, goals, and affect contributes to the changes in students' motivation for mathematics and achievement. The results will provide policy-relevant information that is specifically needed at this time of nascent course placement policy changes that are occurring in light of the recently adopted Common Core State Standards. As schools revise course placement and course taking trajectories, information about influences on the cultivation of students' beliefs and feelings about mathematics carry meaningful utility in light of goals to prepare all students to succeed in an increasingly competitive global economy.

Book excerpt: In my mathematics teaching experiences, I have found students encountering difficulties in successfully remembering and demonstrating all of the major concepts they have learned during the school year. Whether or not the students actually learn and remember the content is a problem numerous teachers experience. As a result, I decided to implement writing into a lower-level seventh grade math classroom to determine if writing would affect student learning. The study was implemented with sixteen lower-level seventh grade math students during the first ten weeks of the 2008-2009 school year at Northwest Junior High in the Iowa City Community School District. Pre-surveys and post-surveys were given to students to determine their attitudes toward mathematics and writing. A pretest and posttest was also administered to assess the effects writing ad on students' growth and achievement over the en week study. Students used their writing skills to explain their reasoning behind their answers. Students also wrote in a journal an average of two times per week. Results from the study showed a minimal increase in the number of students having a positive attitude towards math along with a minimal increase in student achievement. These results may be due to implementation of writing in the mathematics curriculum.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this quantitative research study was to evaluate to what degree Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) education influenced mathematics and science achievement of seventh grade students in one Middle Tennessee school district. This research used an independent samples t test at the = .05 level to evaluate achievement data of students in two middle schools, one with a STEM program and one following a traditional mathematics and science curriculum. The archival data used in this study were TCAP Achieve NCE scores of seventh grade students in both STEM (n=281) and traditional mathematics and science classes (n=350) in order to determine achievement and growth from the 2011-2012 school year to the 2012-2013 school year. A+® LearningLinkTM formative assessment data were used to help determine to what extent STEM teaching and learning strategies impacted student achievement compared to the traditional mathematics and science classes from a school in the same district with similar demographics. The data analyses indicated that students enrolled in the traditional mathematics and science courses experienced significantly greater academic achievement and growth in both mathematics and science compared to the students enrolled in the STEM courses (p=.000). Additionally, the data results revealed the comparison (traditional) group experienced significantly greater academic gains in Quantile® scores for mathematical than participants in the STEM group (p=.002). These findings suggest that the pilot STEM program implemented within the Middle Tennessee School District was not associated with higher Math and Science achievement.

This study examined the relationship between the degree to which school campuses had implemented technology into teaching and learning and the corresponding impact on student performance in reading and mathematics. The Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills (TAKS) scores for all Texas middle schools for the school year 2010-11 were correlated with three components in the Teaching and Learning area of the Texas Campus Student Technology and Readiness (STaR) Chart. Probit regression analyses of the three target areas on the student scores showed that Patterns of Classroom Use and Content Area Connections were each significantly uniquely predictive of achievement results. Leaders should ensure that teachers are equipped to integrate technology in their content.
