Download or read book Psychological Management of Individual Performance written by Sabine Sonnentag and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2003-01-17 with total page 540 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Psychological Management of Individual Performance is a unique combination of contributions from an academic and a practitioner for each topic. Leading international authors come together in this integrative and comprehensive handbook, to combine academic research findings and to provide detailed practice-relevant information, on subjects such as performance concepts, work design, cognitive ability and personality as predictors of performance, performance appraisal and potential analysis, goal setting, training, mentoring, reward systems, strategic HRM as well as broader issues such as well-being and organizational culture. This Handbook is a valuable resource for researchers, academics and advanced students in psychology and related fields; as well as consultants, practitioners and professionals in HR, who want to contribute to the enhancement and maintenance of high individual performance.
Book Synopsis The Role of Ability in Goal Setting: A Re-specification of Ability and Task Complexity as Goal-Performance Moderators by :
Download or read book The Role of Ability in Goal Setting: A Re-specification of Ability and Task Complexity as Goal-Performance Moderators written by and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present study sought integration of two well-documented relationships: the relationship between general mental ability and performance of complex tasks, and between goal characteristics and level of work performance. Goal-setting theory states that the impact of goal level (difficulty and specificity) on performance depends on the task's complexity level. Past versions of the theory have also specified ability as a moderator of the goal-performance relationship. This study tested an alternative model of ability and task complexity as goal-performance moderators: a 3-way interaction among general mental ability (GMA), goal level, and task complexity. Undergraduate psychology students completed a class-scheduling task, which manipulated task complexity and goal difficulty at two levels each. Whereas main effects of task complexity and GMA were found, the 3-way interaction was not supported. Statistical and design limitations, including the absence of control for goal commitment, are discussed.
Book Synopsis Dispositional Vs. Situational Goal Orientation: Effects on Self-Efficacy and Performance by :
Download or read book Dispositional Vs. Situational Goal Orientation: Effects on Self-Efficacy and Performance written by and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An experimental study investigated the effects of dispositional goal orientation, task difficulty, and accountability manipulations (outcome, process, none) on situational goal orientation and task performance. Accountability and task complexity was manipulated using a 3 X 2 experimental design. Subjects completed measures of dispositional goal orientation, and initial task self-efficacy. Subjects then were exposed to an accountability manipulation, designed to frame the subjects' situational goal orientation. Subjects then performed a computerized managerial decision-making task. Task performance was captured electronically and tracked across each decision-making trial to determine rates of learning. Task self-efficacy was measured following pre-determined trials of the experiment and following completion of all decision-making trials. As expected subjects in process and outcome accountability conditions reported higher levels of task specific (situational) learning orientation. The outcome accountability manipulation also resulted in a higher situational performance orientation. Accountability was also found to affect performance, especially when persons are in the early stages of performing a complex task.

Download or read book Long-term Effects of Goal Difficulty and Improvement Goals on Attitudes and Performance written by Megan T. Arens and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Numerous studies have found that assigning specific and difficult goals consistently leads to higher performance than urging people to do their best (Locke & Latham, 2002). However, little research has studied the effects of goal difficulty on performance over repeated trials. In this study, performers were assigned a specific outcome goal attained by 10% of performers (norm-referenced goal, NR), a specific improvement goal attained by only 10% of performers (self-referenced goal, SR), or a do one's best goal. Arguments for specific hypotheses were based in achievement goal, goal commitment, and self-regulation theories (e.g. Grant & Dweck, 2003; Locke & Latham, 1990; Wood & Bandura, 1989). It was hypothesized that these different goal assignments would influence motivational and affective consequences. More specifically, benefits from setting SR goals, compared to NR goals, were expected for performance, persistence, satisfaction, and personal goals. The benefits of possessing SR goals were expected to be strongest for low self-efficacy performers. Results neither supported significant main effects between goal type and performance nor the expected interaction of goal type and self-efficacy. However, participants assigned a NR goal set higher personal goals after all performance trials concluded than those told to do their best, and individuals with high self-efficacy set higher personal goals than those with low self-efficacy. Also, participants told to their best were more satisfied with past performances than those given a SR goal, and participants with high performance levels were more satisfied with past performances.
