Book excerpt: This study evaluated the effectiveness of a sex-education curriculum for male and female youth ages 13 to 15 years old through random assignment of participants to parentpresent or parentabsent classes. Sixty youths completed the Nowicki Locus of Control Inventory for Adolescents and the Mathtech Sexuality Questionnaires for Adolescents, and 58 parents completed a parent questionnaire developed by the researcher. The sexeducation curriculum (SHAPE II--Sharing Healthy Adolescent and Parent Experiences) was developed by the Coalition for Children, Adolescents, and Parents in Orange County, California. The study demonstrated the significance of parents in pregnancy-prevention education. All of the youths in the study increased their clarity about their personal sexual values. Youths in the parent-present design significantly increased knowledge, internal locus of control, and satisfaction with social relationships. In addition, females significantly increased assertiveness skills. In the noparent design, males increased scores in internal locus of control, assertiveness skills, and comfort with their current sex life, whatever it might be, whereas females decreased scores on these same items. Parent and child communication increased to the parents' satisfaction and the dissatisfaction of the youths, whereas both parents and youths reported improved relationships with each other. The study includes baseline data on the attitudes and values of parents in relation to sexuality.

Book excerpt: Based on observation of sex education programmes and in-depth interviews with young people, the authors aim to understand more about adolescent's attitudes to sexuality and their sexual behaviour in order to develop policies which will meet their needs more appropriately and effectively. Issues covered in this interesting and accessible book include the ways adolescent informal culture affects sex education programmes and practice; the impact of gender inequality on sex education and safer sex behaviours; legislation and policy frameworks which effect sex education policies; the way young people see legislation and evaluate sex education programmes; and the impact health professionals can have in school sex education. The authors contend that the insights into the values and views that young people bring to bear on the sex education they receive should have an important role to play in the development of policy and practice of those involved in sex education work.

Book excerpt: Three decades into the HIV pandemic, the goals remain clear: reduce the number of infections, improve the health outcomes of those who are infected, and eliminate disparities in care. And one observation continues to gain credence: families are a powerful resource in preventing, adapting to, and coping with HIV. Recognizing their complex role as educators, mentors, and caregivers, Family and HIV/AIDS assembles a wealth of findings from successful prevention and intervention strategies and provides models for translating evidence into effective real-world practice. Chapters spotlight the differing roles of mothers and fathers in prevention efforts, clarify the need for family/community collaborations, and examine core issues of culture, ethnicity, gender, and diagnosis (e.g., minority families, adolescents with psychological disorders). Throughout, risk reduction and health promotion are shown as a viable public health strategy A reference with considerable utility across the health, mental health, and related disciplines,Family and HIV/AIDS will be a go-to resource for practitioners working with families, researchers studying at-risk populations, administrators seeking to create new (or evaluate existing)prevention and care programs, and policymakers involved in funding such programs.

Abstract: Unsafe sexual behavior among teenagers and young adults would have critical personal impact as well as social and economic burden to the society. The major negative consequences of unsafe sexual behavior were the unwanted teenage pregnancies and sexually transmitted diseases (STDs). In recent decade, different types of adolescent sex education programs were developed in order to safeguard adolescents' health and relieve the public health burden resulting from the negative consequences of unintended teenage pregnancy and STDs; and different studies were published to evaluate the effectiveness of the adolescent sex education programs in the Asian countries. In this systematic review, 15 studies evaluating the effectiveness of adolescent sex education programs from China, Hong Kong, Japan, Korea, Mongolia, Thailand and Vietnam, were identified. The adolescent sex education program was an effective approach for increasing the knowledge towards HIV/AIDS; some of them were also beneficial on improving the refusal skills towards sexual appeal or knowledge, efficacy or attitude in condom use. Nevertheless, due to the difference of study designs, sample size and outcome variables across studies, it is difficult to give an overall result in this review. i DOI: 10.5353/th_b4842553 Subjects: Sex instruction for teenagers - Asia

Book excerpt: This study examines the impact of sex education on sexual health and sexual behaviors in young adults. Using data from the Guttmacher Institute’s National Survey of Reproductive and Contraceptive Knowledge, this research investigates whether education impacts their uses of contraception, visits to the doctor for sexual health, number of sexual partners in a year, and age of first intercourse. Sex education is a topic of sociological interest as it has long been believed that with adequate knowledge on sexuality, sexual health, and resources to contraceptives, teenagers are less likely to engage in risky behaviors. Because this study relates to a public health issue, where contraceptive methods and healthy relationships are emphasized, the findings can contribute to sex education research. Support for positive sexuality education has become favorable to many scholars in the field. The current discussions on sex education in the U.S. are polarized, which makes it important to research the effectiveness of these programs and understand the topics that are included in the curricula. Results show that those who have received a sex education course are not any more likely to have an earlier age of first intercourse nor have a higher number of sexual partners than those who have not received sex education. There is a statistical significance between these groups in that those who have received a sex education course are more likely to make a doctor visit for sexual health related reasons and are more likely to use contraception as compared to those who have not received a sex education course.

Book excerpt: Sex education is rarely out of the news. Despite this, there exist surprisingly few studies of the principles, policies and practice of sex education. This book provides such an examination, focusing on the values to which children are exposed in sex education. Sex education inevitably involves the transmission of values, regardless of whether this is intended by teachers. Throughout the book, academic and professional literature on both values and sex education is reviewed and discussed. The authors look at the implicit liberal values, which underpin programmes of sex education, and at the challenges presented by the diversity of values in contemporary society. The book also considers: * Why values are central to sex education * Children's voices and children's values * Religious and family values * Achievable aims for school sex education * How to help young people to reflect critically on the influences to which they are exposed and on their own developing sexual values * How to build values into practical approaches to sex education at both primary and secondary levels. This timely book will help all those involved in sex education to steer a path between controversial and often opposing views and will be essential reading for students on PGCE and BEd courses. It will also be a valuable resource for teachers and professionals involved in teaching sex education such as teachers of personal and social education, form tutors, heads of year, school nurses, health workers and academics.

Those changes come in the readily recognisable form of pressing familial, educational, economic, informational, cultural and global challenges. We have yet to see how these transformations will impact adolescents' personal relationships and their place in society. We do know, however, that current approaches to the socialisation of adolescents raise important concerns as parents and social institutions respond to challenges. This book explores these changes and challenges by examining the extent to which we may foster adolescent development in ways that respect and foster adolescents' basic rights to relationships they deem appropriate, fulfilling, and worthy of protection. It also explores those changes and rights from a view that acknowledges the need to respect the rights of others, that recognises that adolescents' rights are not for them alone. Contents: Preface; The Legal Foundations of Adolescents' Education; The Place and Nature of Sexuality Education in Society; Revisiting the Traditional Rationale for Sexuality Education: Pregnancy, Developmental Timing, and its Legal Responses; Combating Relationship Violence: Expanding Adolescents'

Book excerpt: Abstract: Sex education for children and teens is of great concern not only to parents and religious officials but also to national health advocates due to the high rate of unplanned pregnancy and sexually transmitted disease prevalence in this population. In the present study, formal and informal sex education including "safe sex"/ contraceptive teaching only, abstinence-only, and abstinence-plus "safe sex" education were examined to determine correlates with sex guilt and specific sexual attitudes and behaviors including communication with sexual partner(s), sexual satisfaction, and contraceptive use at present and at time of first intercourse. Retrospective questionnaires were given to 171 male and female participants and the participants were asked to reveal past and present sex education experiences, sexual activities and behaviors, and sexual attitudes. Familial and partner relationships as well as sex guilt were also examined. Abstinence education, a component of certain sex education programs that promote virginity until marriage but generally ignore the safety precautions of sexual relations if sexual activity begins prior to that time, positively correlated with overall sex guilt and communication with sexual partners about pregnancy and negatively correlated with contraceptive use communication with sexual partners about contraception. No correlations were found between sex education and sexual satisfaction.
