Book excerpt: Abstract: This study used audio-taped chimes and a student checklist for on-task! off-task behavior. The study took place in a high school study hail specifically for students with disabilities. The three participants were tenth graders and had the diagnosis of ADHD. The observers used a 10-second whole interval recording system to record on-task! offtask behavior within an alternating treatment design. The conditions included: Baseline, Self-Monitoring, and Self-Monitoring with Reinforcement. Results indicate self- monitoring alone was effective enough to significantly increase the on-task behavior of two participants. Additional reinforcement was needed to increase the on-task behavior of the third student.

Book excerpt: "This study investigated the effects of self-management procedures on the on-task behaviors of one male and one female high school students with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. The students were taught to self- monitor and self-record their on-task and off-task behavior in a special education English classroom. A single subject, multiple baseline design was used to assess the effectiveness of the self-management intervention. One student improved on-task behaviors throughout the study. The other student was dropped from the study. The results of this study suggest that self-management is an effective tool for helping students improve their on-task behavior in the school setting"--Document.

Book excerpt: This study sought to investigate the effects of a self-monitoring with goal-setting intervention on students' disruptive behavior. A multiple baseline A-B-BC design was implemented across five elementary school-aged participants diagnosed with ADHD to examine the use of a behavioral intervention combining self-monitoring and goal-setting techniques to decrease disruptive behavior. The results of this study suggest that self-monitoring with goal-setting appears to be an effective intervention package for decreasing the disruptive behavior of students with ADHD and that these behavioral decreases sustain after intervention completion. Results also suggest moderate benefits of the use of a self-monitoring with goal-setting intervention over a self-monitoring intervention. Teacher ratings suggest that the self-monitoring with goal-setting package is moderately acceptable for classroom use. However, the limitations of this study make definitive conclusions about the intervention's effectiveness difficult. These limitations should be addressed in future research.

To help students with ADHD regulate their behaviours and maximise their potential, behaviour modification strategies, such as self-monitoring attention, are often employed. Previous research on self-monitoring attention intervention has established that students' on-task behaviour improved when they were taught to self-monitor. However, there is insufficient research that investigates the maintenance effects of self-monitoring over time. Hence, this mixed method study explores the maintenance effects as well as the reasons for the positive or discouraging maintenance effects of the self-monitoring intervention. This study involved three participants who were students in Grades 4 and 7 of a school. Results revealed that all three improved in their on-task behaviour after they self-monitored, but only one was able to maintain the on-task behaviours when the intervention was faded. The participants' ability to maintain effects of self-monitoring is dependent on student differences. Some of these differences include the students' independent learning level, the distractibility of the intervention, a clear understanding of instructions, their cognitive systems, and disinterest in the learning activities.

Book excerpt: This study examined the effects of self-monitoring appropriate and inappropriate behaviors with student-delivered reinforcement and self-graphing with a MotivAider® timer on increasing appropriate behaviors and decreasing inappropriate behaviors with students with Emotional Behavior Disorders (EBD). Appropriate and inappropriate behaviors were measured using frequency. Students used an individualized data sheet to count their appropriate and inappropriate behaviors exhibited during instruction, delivering a reinforcer to themselves if they met pre-determined criteria, and graphing their number of appropriate and inappropriate behaviors daily. Students were between the ages of nine and twelve. All four participants had a diagnosis of Attention Deficit Hyper Activity (ADHD) and were placed in a Behavior Learning Center within their school district. A multiple-baseline across participants design was used to evaluate the effectiveness of the intervention. Findings indicated that the use of self-monitoring with a MotivAider®, self-graphing, and self-delivered reinforcement increased the number of appropriate behaviors exhibited and decreased the number of inappropriate behaviors exhibited.

Book excerpt: Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is one of the leading diagnoses for children. Children diagnosed with ADHD often have difficulty in many settings including at school as well as in the home. Medication is often a common treatment for these children, however, it has been often shown ineffective when used alone. A review of behavioral interventions, including various self-regulation interventions has been studied. Self-regulation interventions have been shown to be effective for children diagnosed with ADHD primarily in school or academic settings. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of a self-management intervention on the on-task behavior of children diagnosed with ADHD. Specifically, this study aimed to examine the impact a self-management intervention would have on the on-task behavior of children during various routines, both academic and non-academic, in the child's home setting. Participants were trained to use a self-management intervention. As a result of the accurate use of the self-management intervention all three participant's on-task behavior increased. For one participant, the duration of the targeted routine also substantially decreased.

Book excerpt: This study examined the effectiveness of using a technology-based self-monitoring intervention called Monitoring Behavior on the Go (MoBeGo). On-task behavior for students with behavioral issues was the primary dependent variable in the study. The researcher employed a single-subject withdrawal design (ABAB) with two generalization phases (C-D) to investigate the ability of MoBeGo to generalize the results to a different setting. Visual analysis of graphs revealed the participants had a clear functional relationship between MoBeGo and percentage of on-task behavior. The finding illustrated on-task behaviors in a different setting did not increase without using MoBeGo and therefore no automatic generalization occurred in different settings. A replicated phase (D) was conducted to confirm the finding, and the results showed the percentage of on-task behavior increased in math and science classes which used MoBeGo and did not increase in reading/writing which did not use MoBeGo. Also, the outcomes showed MoBeGo has a high level of acceptability among teachers who participated in the study. The researcher evaluated this single-subject withdrawal design (ABABCD) by using the What Works Clearinghouse (WWC) evidence standards. In addition, the researcher utilized the Single-Case Analysis and Review Framework (SCARF) to evaluate the study outcomes. The evaluation results of using WWC and SCARF are discussed in Chapter 4. The researcher discussed major lessons learned and some limitations of using technology based self-monitoring (TBSM). In addition, implications for practitioners, researchers, and application developers were included as future directions for using TBSM. Moreover, the researcher discussed the potential role of self-monitoring-based artificial intelligence (SMBAI) in education, and the use of artificial intelligence (AI), large language models (LLMs), or machine learning (ML) with self-monitoring apps. Finally, some important questions were raised about protecting privacy and minimizing the risk of data breaches for individuals, and how to ensure the security of individuals' data.

Book excerpt: This thesis represents an experimental analysis procedure designed and carried out by this author to increase attention to and completion of math homework. The subject of this study was a 13-year-old boy with Autism and ADHD. The skill was being able to self-monitor and increase his on-task behavior. In the intervention, a MotivAider ® (2 3/8" x 2 1/2") is an assistive technology device that vibrates at varying intervals, as a cue to increase his on-task behavior. Results showed some increase in his on-task behavior. Stronger results might have occurred if more sessions had occurred. Previous research has shown that the MotivAider ® and self-monitoring is successful in increasing on-task behavior. Future research will look into techniques to increase motivation and accuracy of self-monitoring.

Book excerpt: Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is the most prevalent childhood psychiatric condition, with estimates of more than 5% of children affected worldwide, and has a profound public health, personal, and family impact. At the same time, a multitude of adults, both diagnosed and undiagnosed, are living, coping, and thriving while experiencing ADHD. It can cost families raising a child with ADHD as much as five times the amount of raising a child without ADHD (Zhao et al. 2019). Given the chronic and pervasive challenges associated with ADHD, innovative approaches for supporting children, adolescents, and adults have been engaged, including the use of both novel and off-the-shelf technologies. A wide variety of connected and interactive technologies can enable new and different types of sociality, education, and work, support a variety of clinical and educational interventions, and allow for the possibility of educating the general population on issues of inclusion and varying models of disability. This book provides a comprehensive review of the historical and state-of-the-art use of technology by and for individuals with ADHD. Taking both a critical and constructive lens to this work, the book notes where great strides have been made and where there are still open questions and considerations for future work. This book provides background and lays foundation for a general understanding of both ADHD and innovative technologies in this space. The authors encourage students, researchers, and practitioners, both with and without ADHD diagnoses, to engage with this work, build upon it, and push the field further.

Book excerpt: Abstract: Teaching students to self-monitor their behavior has proven to be an effective educational strategy for increasing the on-task behavior of students with and without disabilities. This study examined the effectiveness of a tactile prompt to increase the on-task behaviors among 3 high-school students diagnosed with severe emotional disorders, being served in a self-contained special education classroom. Students were taught to self-monitor their behavior by using the MotivAider, an electronic device that prompts the student to record their behavior by vibrating. An ABAB reversal design was used for each of the participants, and the results indicated that after the implementation of the self monitoring intervention, the students' on-task behavior increased from 33.6% of the intervals during initial baseline to 81.9% of the intervals during the intervention phase. Not only did the MotivAider increase the on-task behavior of the students, the students enjoyed using them, and after the study was completed continued to use the MotivAiders.

Book excerpt: Self-management procedures have been used in school settings to successfully reduce problem behaviors and reinforce appropriate behavior. Two multiple-baseline across participants designs were applied to evaluate the effects of self-management procedures to enhance classroom preparation skills and homework completion behaviors of secondary school students with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). Six male students enrolled in a public middle school were selected for this study as result of teacher reports indicating insufficient class preparation and inconsistent homework completion. The intervention involved training in self-management procedures focusing on the improvement of classroom preparation skills and homework completion behaviors. Participants met with the school psychologist during the training and monitoring phases to learn the self-management strategies and review their progress. Meetings with the trainer were systematically faded as the participants developed self-management skills. The percentage of classroom preparation skills and homework behaviors across participants are graphically displayed. Through visual analysis, changes in level, trend, intercept, and variability across phases were examined, showing a positive response to the intervention across all participants. In addition, student, teacher and parent acceptance of the self-management intervention were assessed to be high. The current study suggested that the use of a self-management intervention successfully enhanced the classroom preparation and homework behaviors of middle school boys diagnosed with ADHD. Strengths and limitations, as well as future research directions are discussed.
