The study also looked into the individuals' ability to accurately self-monitor their behavior. The participants were taught to self-monitor their behavior using a MotivAiderTM that was set to vibrate on one-minute fixed intervals. The vibration acted as a tactile cue to prompt the participant to ask themselves "Am I on task?" A concurrent multiple baseline design with an embedded changing criterion design was utilized. Results showed on-task behavior significantly increased while accuracy of self-monitoring increased gradually once the intervention was implemented.

Recently, a self--monitoring device called a MotiAider® has shown promise for increasing on-task behavior. The present study examined the effects of the MotivAider® and a selfrecording procedure on the on-task behavior of elementary students with autism. In addition, task completion, task accuracy and accuracy of self-recording was evaluated. A multiple baseline across participants design demonstrated a functional relationship. Results indicated substantial improvement of on-task behavior for all three students during 20-minute independent work periods. Results also indicated high percentages of on-task behaviors in the maintenance phase when both the MotivAider® and selfrecording were discontinued.

With classroom management as the most important factor affecting student learning and achievement (Emmer & Stough, 2001; Wang, Haertel, & Walberg, 1993), the purpose of this two-companion studies dissertation is to research the use of technology and self-management system components to determine its effects on on-task engagement and disruptive classroom behavior of adolescents with disabilities.The first chapter is a literature review providing an overview of self-management, focusing on self-monitoring and self-graphing. The literature review synthesizes the research regarding specific components related to student task engagement and behavior within the classroom and describes how technology has been utilized in current literature.In Study I, four adolescent students were successfully taught to use Google Forms© to self-record their behavior. Data were collected to compare a paper-based self-recording procedure or a technology-based procedure using a single-case alternating treatments design. Results indicated that students using technology was more efficient and increased on-task performance and/or decreased disruptive behavior better or equal to paper-based self-monitoring procedures. Additionally, both students and teachers preferred technology to paper-based self-monitoring.During Study II, the same four students participated in a second alternating treatments design study to compare paper-based self-graphing procedures or automatic graphing procedures on Google Forms©. Results indicated that students using technology-based automatic graphing increased on-task performance and/or decreased disruptive behavior better or equal to paper-based self-graphing. Moreover, technology-based automatic graphing was more efficient. Also, both students and teachers preferred technology to paper-based self-monitoring.Chapter 4 discusses these findings, conclusions, implications, and how utilizing technology has impacted self-monitoring in the context of using a more efficient intervention given similar efficacious results. Limitations and recommendations for future research in self-monitoring with technology for students with disabilities are provided.

However, self-monitoring is typically included as one component of multicomponent interventions. Thus, it is unclear which component or combination of components is critical for the success of the intervention. We sought to extend previous self-monitoring research in a variety of ways. First, we evaluated the effects of video and in-vivo training as a procedure for teaching selfmonitoring. Next, we conducted a component analysis of a self-monitoring intervention by sequentially adding successive components to determine their independent effects for increasing appropriate task engagement and decreasing automatically-reinforced stereotypy. We included self-monitoring accuracy as a dependent variable during and following self-monitoring training to determine the role of accurate self-monitoring on the other target behaviors. All participants learned to accurately and independently self-monitor their appropriate task engagement and offtask behavior during training. Results of the treatment component analysis indicated that selfmonitoring plus differential reinforcement and differential reinforcement of alternative behavior (DRA) alone were equally effective components for two participants, suggesting that DRA was the critical component of the intervention. For the third participant, self-monitoring plus differential reinforcement was somewhat more effective than DRA alone. Book excerpt: This study examined the effectiveness of using a technology-based self-monitoring intervention called Monitoring Behavior on the Go (MoBeGo). On-task behavior for students with behavioral issues was the primary dependent variable in the study. The researcher employed a single-subject withdrawal design (ABAB) with two generalization phases (C-D) to investigate the ability of MoBeGo to generalize the results to a different setting. Visual analysis of graphs revealed the participants had a clear functional relationship between MoBeGo and percentage of on-task behavior. The finding illustrated on-task behaviors in a different setting did not increase without using MoBeGo and therefore no automatic generalization occurred in different settings. A replicated phase (D) was conducted to confirm the finding, and the results showed the percentage of on-task behavior increased in math and science classes which used MoBeGo and did not increase in reading/writing which did not use MoBeGo. Also, the outcomes showed MoBeGo has a high level of acceptability among teachers who participated in the study. The researcher evaluated this single-subject withdrawal design (ABABCD) by using the What Works Clearinghouse (WWC) evidence standards. In addition, the researcher utilized the Single-Case Analysis and Review Framework (SCARF) to evaluate the study outcomes. The evaluation results of using WWC and SCARF are discussed in Chapter 4. The researcher discussed major lessons learned and some limitations of using technology based self-monitoring (TBSM). In addition, implications for practitioners, researchers, and application developers were included as future directions for using TBSM. Moreover, the researcher discussed the potential role of self-monitoring-based artificial intelligence (SMBAI) in education, and the use of artificial intelligence (AI), large language models (LLMs), or machine learning (ML) with self-monitoring apps. Finally, some important questions were raised about protecting privacy and minimizing the risk of data breaches for individuals, and how to ensure the security of individuals' data.
