Book excerpt: Recent incentive compensation trends suggest that many firms are (a) increasing the frequency with which they reward their employees and (b) providing gift-like unconditional rewards to employees irrespective of performance. This study investigates how reward frequency and reward conditionality jointly influence two important drivers of employee performance: the discovery of task efficiencies and the intensity of productive effort. We predict and find that the effect of reward frequency on employee behavior depends upon the conditionality of the rewards. Specifically, while increasing reward frequency has a negative effect on the number of efficiencies employees find when rewards are conditional, it has a positive effect on efficiency finding when rewards are unconditional. We also find that employees receiving conditional rewards exhibit higher output per efficiency than those receiving unconditional rewards, suggesting higher productive effort intensity for conditional rewards. Further, increasing reward frequency when rewards are conditional leads to higher output per efficiency, but when rewards are unconditional, there is no significant difference in output per efficiency from increasing reward frequency. Results of our study contribute to both theory and practice by providing a deeper understanding of the role reward frequency and reward conditionality play in influencing two important drivers of employee performance.

As we have intended to study the influence of rewards and satisfaction on employee’s performance in an organization, information that we have used were gathered from distinct areas such as textbooks, scholarly writing, research materials, journals, related articles, and the Internet sources were resourceful in the process of gathering the information, however, our point of view on those sources was also interpreted in a concept that we have aware to be relevant and potentially directed to this topic. As a result, this study shows that the whole variables were significantly contributed with the dependent variable, meanwhile, pay level satisfaction has substantively related to work performance, whereas raise satisfaction has also influenced work performance. Yet, as Fisher's book reveals, a strategic focus on non-cash rewards can generate significant return on investment in terms of employee engagement, performance improvement and financial results. In the present economic context, with companies pushing to deliver more for less, it is a particularly pertinent issue. Strategic Reward and Recognition brings together theory and practice to guide HR professionals, consultants and senior leaders in developing the most effective programmes for their organizations. It features examples of good practice from all over the world, from different sectors and from both large and small organizations, providing coverage of digital as well as in-person schemes.

Book excerpt: The use of tangible rewards in the form of non-cash incentives with a monetary value has become increasingly common at organizations (Peltier, Schultz and Block 2005). Despite their use, the behavioral and performance effects of tangible rewards have received minimal research attention. Relative to cash rewards, we predict tangible rewards will have positive effects on goal commitment and performance but will lead employees to set easier goals, which will negatively affect performance. The overall performance impact of tangible rewards will depend on the relative strength of these competing effects. We conduct a quasi-experiment at five call centers of a financial services company. Employees at two locations earned cash rewards for goal attainment while employees at three locations earned points, with equivalent retail value to cash rewards, redeemable for merchandise. Results show that cash rewards lead to better performance through their effects on the difficulty of the goals employees selected. Implications for theory and practice are discussed.
