Book excerpt: With the adoption of the Common Core State Standards (CCSS), which were developed in 2010, an emphasis on reading for information, applying what is learned in the classroom to real world situations, using higher level critical thinking skills and improving problem solving underscore reading fluency as one of the foundational skills needed to access the core curriculum (Rothman, 2012). Educators have always searched for ways to adapt their curriculum to best suit the needs of their students and improve reading fluency. One way to elicit fluent readers is repeated reading. This approach can be used with any adopted textbook program, and research has shown readers theater and specific repeated reading interventions produce significant gains in reading fluency (Corcoran & Davis, 2005). The data selected for analysis were derived from first-grade students who participated daily in Repeated Readings of Poetry. This supplemental activity was used outside of the reading core and occurred each week over a 4-month period. Each poem was introduced and practiced in the prescribed manner within a 5-day span before the introduction of another poem. A paired sample t-test was conducted to determine if there was a significant difference between the mean scores of the pre- and post-test Oral Reading Fluency (ORF) assessment. An alpha level of .05 was used to determine statistical significance. The results of the analysis suggest that participation in Repeated Readings of Poetry does have a positive impact on reading fluency.

Book excerpt: Reading fluency has been identified as a key component of proficient reading. Research has consistently demonstrated significant and substantial correlations between reading fluency and overall reading achievement. Despite the great potential for fluency to have a significant outcome on students’ reading achievement, it continues to be not well understood by teachers, school administrators and policy makers. The chapters in this volume examine reading fluency from a variety of perspectives. The initial chapter sketches the history of fluency as a literacy instruction component. Following chapters examine recent studies and approaches to reading fluency, followed by chapters that explore actual fluency instruction models and the impact of fluency instruction. Assessment of reading fluency is critical for monitoring progress and identifying students in need of intervention. Two articles on assessment, one focused on word recognition and the other on prosody, expand our understanding of fluency measurement. Finally, a study from Turkey explores the relationship of various reading competencies, including fluency, in an integrated model of reading. Our hope for this volume is that it may spark a renewed interest in research into reading fluency and fluency instruction and move toward making fluency instruction an even more integral part of all literacy instruction.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to determine the effectiveness of using repeated reading of poetry as a strategy to increase third graders' reading fluency scores. This study utilized a quasi-experimental one group pretest/post test design. The researcher implemented one poem per week, for a nine-week period, with a group of six third grade students. The study was conducted during the fall trimester of the 2009-2010 school year. The Basic Reading Inventory (BRI) was given as a pretest to establish baseline scores, as well as a post test for an indicator of progress. An anecdotal journal was used to document observations about student progress during the study. Six selected students received daily instruction on one poem per week. After being introduced to each poem. students were asked to practice reading the poem independently, with a partner and in a small group. On the last day of each week the researcher collected fluency data by timing and listening to each student. A comparison group of six different students with similar reading abilities were given the BRI pre/posttst. In comparing the performance data of the two groups, the treatment group showed a significant growth. The results may be due to the inclusion of repeated reading of simple poems as a strategy to increase fluency.

Students took part in weekly poetry activities to encourage and promote reading fluency. Students were also involved in poetry readings in front of a classroom and parent audience. Student progress was measured using three data tools. Baseline data were gathered through the use of running records. Parent opinions were collected through the use of a survey at the beginning and conclusion of the study. These data tools were all used to measure the effect repeated readings.and performance of poetry had on student fluency. All students involved in the study were fluent at grade level, or on track to be fluent at grade level, by the conclusion of the school year. Therefore, data support the use of repeated readings of poetry to increase student fluency on grade level text.

This research was conducted in a First Grade classroom with ten subjects. The treatment lasted for nine weeks with pretests and posttests administered the first and last weeks of the study. Data taken included nonsense word recognition, words per minute read, and anecdotal journals. At the beginning of each week, the five subjects in the treatment group conferenced with the teacher about a new poem. The subjects took home the poem and practiced it with an adult for four days. Subjects (or their guardians) documented the number of minutes read each night on verification sheets. Data were compiled, triangulated and analyzed to form conclusions. Results from this study showed an increase in reading fluency of both the treatment and comparison subjects during the nine week treatment period. Further research is needed to determine if the conclusions of this study would be applicable to a generalized population.

Book excerpt: ASTRACT: This qualitative study documented fifth grade students exploring reading fluency through repeated reading of songs and poems during a twelve-week period. The teacher modeled appropriate reading rate, accuracy, and prosody. The students then used the same 2-3 poems or songs for the week and practiced repeated reading in a variety of ways, including choral reading, partner reading, and silent reading. As the students continued to reread the text, they were asked to work in partners and analyze the text. The teacher used direct instruction and repeated reading to support teaching comprehension. At the end of the week, the students performed their poems and songs for an audience and the students then voted on and discussed which readings were most enjoyable to listen to and were most fluently read. Throughout the study the teacher collected data through nonparticipant observation, participant observation, surveys, student work, and diagnostic reading assessments. The data collected from this study suggests that students that are given a purpose for rereading and are given engaging, short, and age appropriate texts are able to make gains in their fluency and comprehension skills.

Book excerpt: Abstract: This study examined the effects of repeated reading practice on oral reading fluency and comprehension skills of elementary-aged students. Eight fifth-grade students, determined to be reading below grade level, and recognized by the classroom teacher as needing additional reading instruction participated in the study. A multiple baseline across subjects experimental design was used, with an initial baseline period of ten sessions. Participants entered the intervention in pairs according to similar reading levels. During each repeated reading session student pairs orally read, alternating paragraphs, to one another for a practice period of ten minutes. Students used a specified correction procedure when miscues occurred during the practice period. Following practice, each student participated in a one-minute timed trial, which was scored by the researcher for number of words read per minute and number of miscues committed by the reader. A cloze procedure comprehension assessment was done when the student reached the fluency criterion (one hundred eighty words read per minute). The dependent variables in this study were number of words read in one minute, number of miscues committed, and number of comprehension questions answered correctly. Results indicate that students' oral reading fluency improved with practice, miscues decreased with practice, and comprehension skills significantly improved overall. No word recognition skill gains were observed.
