Book excerpt: The purpose of this mixed-method study was to examine and better understand the impact of participating in a 7-week intensive, phonologically-based remedial reading program on the self-perceptions of maltreated adolescent and young adult struggling readers from the Ontario Child-Welfare system. Eleven maltreated youth with reading difficulties aged 15 to 23 years were extensively interviewed both prior to and following intervention about their reading and skill-related self-perceptions. Their responses were analyzed thematically using grounded theory methodology. Independent and paired-samples t tests were also conducted to measure the impact of intervention on the self-perceptions and reading achievement of these youth and to evaluate whether these variables significantly differed from a group of maltreated youth without reading difficulties (n = 11). Results converged to provide empirical support for the benefits of reading intervention on the self-perceptions and reading achievement of maltreated struggling readers. Implications, limitations and directions for future research are discussed.

Book excerpt: Study 1 also used a reading classification system to categorize the 55 youth into one of three poor reader subtypes based on their pattern of cognitive deficit. Using criteria derived from the Double Deficit Hypothesis, 96% of the sample could be classified; 41% presented with a PA Deficit Only; 2% a RAN Deficit Only; and 57% a Double Deficit (DD). The DD subgroup were the most impaired readers. These results were compared to a school-aged sample of poor readers classified in Lovett, Steinbach and Frijters's (2000) study. This thesis describes the results from two studies. Study 1 examined the cognitive processing skills of 55 struggling readers from the child welfare system to determine whether their cognitive skills differed from the skills of struggling readers within the general population. The results showed these 55 youth presented with a pattern of cognitive deficits similar to that which characterizes poor readers in the general population. They showed deficits in phonological awareness (PA), rapid automatized naming (RAN), vocabulary, and memory. The cognitive skills of these 55 youth were also compared to the skills of 15 good readers from the child welfare system. Overall, the good readers performed significantly better than the poor readers on most of the cognitive measures although, individually, many of the good readers presented with weaknesses on these measures as well. In a second set of analyses, the good readers were matched onintelligence and age to a smaller sample of 15 poor readers. The results of these analyses were similar to the first set. In Study 2, 24 youth-in-care with poor reading skills participated in one of two reading programs (Program A or Program B) to see if either intervention would improve their reading. The results showed that participants made significant gains on the majority of measures administered to them at post-test. The youth in both programs made significant gains with Program A participants showing greater gains on only one of the measures, suggesting that the youth benefited equally from the programs. Youth with different patterns of cognitive deficit, based on the Double Deficit classification, also benefited equally from the two programs.

Data sources included observations, semi-structured interviews, and artifacts such as progress reports, work samples, and RTI notes and progress monitoring data. Cross-case data analysis focused on the perceptions the participants had of their reading abilities and the instruction they were receiving. Findings revealed that struggling adolescent readers (a) had identified themselves as struggling readers, (b) wanted to become better readers, and (c) trusted their teachers to foster their literacy growth. Student reading ability and progress is an essential component of the learning and success for each and every student. Academic intervention service programs for struggling students are state mandated in school grades where state standardized testing is present and encouraged in earlier grades to promote the progression of the development of reading. This study explores how a school district identifies student reading progress through a remedial reading program and how progress is monitored. Participants in this study include classroom teachers, reading teachers, and school building administrators within a middle-income suburban school district in the Northeast United States. Applying frameworks from Frank Smith's (1991) Advocacy Design Study and Edgar Schein's (2004) theory of organizational leadership and culture to analyze and extract assumptions, artifacts, and values, this study centers around the progress of student reading is how it is identified and monitored. Emergent themes within the findings of this study center around trust and planning. The implications of this study support thoughtfully guided staff development in remedial reading teaching practices, and the positive relationship between trust, which can assist school administrators and instructional staff in the organization and instruction of a current program, and present the effectiveness and efficacy based on these findings of student outcomes.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to explore how three struggling, sixth grade readers experienced an after-school program designed to increase their affective and cognitive reading performance. Research in the areas of vocabulary acquisition, reading strategy development, discussion of text, time spent reading, engagement, and reader self-perception provided a foundation for the study. This study utilized a multiple case study design. Qualitative data was analyzed and described with rich description regarding what the students did (actions), what the student said (words), and their interactions with one another as they participated in the after-school program. During an eight-week period, students attended the after-school program where they participated in text and vocabulary discussions, read engaging literature, and learned reading strategies. Participant reader self-perception and engagement were also addressed. Data consisted of individual interviews, focus group interviews, transcripts of discussion sessions, researcher field notes, work samples, and pre-reading and post-reading inventory assessment data. Data analysis during the reading and rereading of data resulted in emerging themes for the individual participants. Through a cross case analysis, similarities and differences among the cases evolved. Results indicated that this group of struggling readers (a) needed a great deal of direct modeling, instruction, and practice to perform as members of a discussion group; (b) thrived as readers in a small group intimate setting that encouraged their voice in discussion of text; (c) did not possess knowledge or use of reading strategies at the onset of the study; (d) could utilize reading strategies under the support of the teacher but had difficulty applying them in independent reading during this time period; (e) increased their engagement with reading when they had choice in text selection; (f) had reading performance that was impeded by their lack of preparation at the onset of the study; (g) advanced their understanding of both text and vocabulary through discussion to make meaning experiences; (h) utilized the reading strategy of connection to make meaning of text; and (i) were individuals with diverse needs and strengths.

Struggling adolescent readers cannot summarize a simple passage, use context to determine word meanings, and have difficulties making text-based inferences. In addition, poor fluency limits many struggling readers' ability to process text efficiently, compromising basic and inferential comprehension (Cantrell et al., 2013; Flynn et al., 2012). This study presents intention-to-treat impacts from a randomized clinical trial of the Strategic Adolescent Reading Intervention (STARI) on a scenarios-based assessment of reading comprehension. STARI is a multicomponent reading intervention for struggling middle school readers and is implemented as a year-long supplemental reading program for middle school students who score below proficient on state literacy assessments. Building from a multiple-component view of reading development, STARI incorporates strands on decoding, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension, and provides multiple supports for struggling adolescent readers. For example, teachers provide explicit instruction on strategies for decoding multisyllabic words, focused on identifying more complex letter combinations, syllable patterns, and morphological units such as base words and affixes. Instructional activities that target these skills have shown success in improving older struggling readers' word recognition and fluency (Edmonds et al., 2009). In previous work, positive intention-to-treat effects on multiple domains of reading, including word reading, morphological awareness, and efficiency of basic reading were found. This study extends prior work by examining effects on a Global, Integrated Scenario-Based Assessment (GISA) that is designed to assess a broader conception of reading ability (Sabatini et al., 2014). This impact analysis extends prior work by showing that a multi-component Tier-2 intervention for struggling adolescent readers can improve a range of reading outcomes as well as a global, integrated scenario-based assessment of reading.

Book excerpt: The foundation for the present study was based on the No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB, 2001), Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement Act (IDEA) 2004, and Florida Response to Intervention (RTI) (Florida RTI, 2009). In line with the NCLB Act, Florida requires students to pass the reading portion of the Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test (FCAT) on grade level in order to graduate (FL-DOE, 2001). In alignment with the RTI framework, READ 180 is presently being implemented as a Tier 2 intervention with adolescent struggling readers across the nation. The methodology for this research was a retrospective research design, with the use of multiple regression and logistic regression models which are consistent with the purpose. Neither of the analyses indicated a significant relationship between READ 180 and the attainment of the minimum yearly gain on the developmental scale score (DSS) of the reading portion of the FCAT. The data analyses supported previous research results indicating that students who are identified as White, from non-low SES families, and not identified with a disability, have more academic success. The results indicated that the regular classroom with reading strategies instruction was just as effective for promoting reading achievement as the separate classroom with specific reading instruction. Because students who participated in the intensive reading intervention forfeit the opportunity to participate in other courses, policy makers and educators need to weigh carefully the costs and benefits of such programs.

It both synthesizes research findings to determine the relative effectiveness of interventions for struggling older readers and outlines the implications of these findings for practice. Its purpose is to advance the knowledge of technical assistance providers working with state departments of education and local education agencies concerning reading-related issues for students with reading difficulties and learning disabilities (LD). While the authors' methods and general findings are described, they are presented in terms of their impact on practice and policy. Specific suggestions for implementing these and other research findings are provided in an accompanying practice brief (ED521836). This report is intended primarily for technical assistance providers at Regional Comprehensive Centers for their use in crafting evidence-based guidance for states and local educational agencies.
