This study was a repeated measure design consisting of three four-week units with Readers' Theater implemented as treatment in the second of the three units. The study was carried out in one second grade classroom over the course of 12 weeks. Data was collected in the form of pre- and post-assessments for each of the three units. The results of the study indicate that over the duration of the study, Readers' Theater helped maintain and improve oral reading rates and prosody for second grade students. Although the data did not indicate that Readers' Theater had a direct impact on reader's attitudes, the students enjoyed Readers' Theater. Following the study, students asked daily for additional Reader's Theater time, expressing their motivation and interest in reading" -- Abstract, p. 1.

Book excerpt: Reading fluency has been identified as a key component of proficient reading. Research has consistently demonstrated significant and substantial correlations between reading fluency and overall reading achievement. Despite the great potential for fluency to have a significant outcome on students’ reading achievement, it continues to be not well understood by teachers, school administrators and policy makers. The chapters in this volume examine reading fluency from a variety of perspectives. The initial chapter sketches the history of fluency as a literacy instruction component. Following chapters examine recent studies and approaches to reading fluency, followed by chapters that explore actual fluency instruction models and the impact of fluency instruction. Assessment of reading fluency is critical for monitoring progress and identifying students in need of intervention. Two articles on assessment, one focused on word recognition and the other on prosody, expand our understanding of fluency measurement. Finally, a study from Turkey explores the relationship of various reading competencies, including fluency, in an integrated model of reading. Our hope for this volume is that it may spark a renewed interest in research into reading fluency and fluency instruction and move toward making fluency instruction an even more integral part of all literacy instruction.

This strategy has become a hot topic in reading. There are many articles tying Readers Theater to increases in student fluency. This study investigated the benefits of Readers Theater on fluency and reading engagement in students that were reading below grade level. The students that were reading below grade level in the classroom were divided into two groups. One group spent 15 minutes of their reading time doing Readers Theater, the other group did not. The motivation for investigating the benefits of Readers Theater is that it was something that the students had enjoyed the previous year. There is also not a set curriculum in the school where this study took place, so there was a need to look for possible strategies that could be adopted by all of the classrooms within the school. The results showed that there was a significant difference in the fluency of students that participated in Readers Theater to the ones who did not. There was a significant difference found in the growth of engagement of students who participated in Readers Theater to those that did not. Overall, the students that participated in Readers Theater a higher growth in fluency and engagement than the other students that did not participate in Readers Theater.

Book excerpt: Research question: What effects does repeated reading using Reader's Theater have on a first grade students' oral reading fluency? Sub-questions: To what extent does using Reader's Theater effect and English Language Learners motivation to re-read text? To what extent does having families involved at home have on a first graders reading fluency at school? Research activities: This research explores to the use of Reader's Theater as an approach to teaching and building oral reading fluency, and motivating students to re-read text in first grade. Context: The study took place in a self-contained first grade classroom at a public school in California. The research focused on five students. Four of the students included were English Language Learners whose primary language is Spanish. Two of the students were repeating first grade. Methods and data: The intervention lasted three weeks in which scripts were selected for groups of students to read over the course of a week and present on Friday. Partner work and group work was used as a means to increase engagement. Data sets include pre and post Developmental Reading Survey results, oral reading fluency rubric scores, an attitudinal survey, behavior tallies, observation field notes, and student reading inventories. Results: Comparisons of baseline and outcome data indicate that Reader's Theater can promote oral reading fluency. Focus students reading fluency scores increased each week. In addition, students overall reading scores improved and in some cases increased by two levels. Conclusions: Results suggest that students are more motivated to re-read text when using Reader's Theater as it is engaging and enjoyable. Using Reader's Theater increased student's awareness of punctuation, expression, and gestures while reading. Grade Level: First Grade. A large body of research has demonstrated its popularity and effectiveness in promoting the reading development of elementary school students. The purpose of this investigation was to explore whether the use of Readers Theater would enhance the literacy development of low-achieving secondary school students when embedded as an intensive unit of study in a language arts program. Ninth grade students in an alternative program for high ability low achieving students engaged in a study of Readers Theater in which they responded to literature by writing, rehearsing, and performing Readers Theater scripts. Data consisted of surveys, interviews, participant journals, research fieldnotes, audiotapes, and pertinent academic artifacts. Participants were administered an informal reading inventory before and after the Readers Theater experience to document any changes in fluency and reading rate. Participants' pre/post results were compared to test results for a group of students in the same school who did not participate in Readers Theater. In addition, a case study of two students provided an in-depth profile of their participation in Readers Theater. The 12-week study used a mixed methods approach that involved both qualitative and quantitative data analysis. The study was guided by two research questions: 1. What impact does participation in Readers Theater have on the attitudes, interest and motivation of high ability, low achieving, ninth-grade students as literacy learners? 2. What impact does Readers Theater have on the fluency development of high ability, low achieving, ninth-grade students as compared to a similar group not participating in Readers Theater? The findings of this study indicate that the Readers Theater experience had a positive impact on students' attitudes towards reading and on their overall literacy development, including metacognition, confidence in oral reading, collaboration, and writing. Student[s] who participated in Readers Theater made dramatic improvements in fluency. Students' test scores indicate a significant growth in reading rate and fluency. The findings of this study further show that Readers Theater provides a successful holistic activity for adolescent learners. When embedded as a regular instructional component of the language arts curriculum, Readers Theater can naturally integrate reading, writing, speaking, and listening within an authentic learning community. Readers Theater enables students to realize success and understand the power of reading in their lives."--Abstract.
