Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scientific and commercial interest in the field of nutritional neuroscience has grown immensely over the last decade. Today, a broad range of dietary supplements, foods for weight loss, functional foods, nutraceuticals, and medical foods are widely available. Many of these products are marketed for their effects on behavior or brain function, which relates directly to nutritional neuroscience and raises issues regarding their safety and efficacy. The only comprehensive reference on this subject, Nutritional Neuroscience discusses the relationship of nutrition to behavior and neuroscience. Following a review of fundamental issues and methods, the book covers the effects of macronutrients and micronutrients on brain function and behavior. Chapters are devoted to the effects of a wide range of foods, specific nutrients, food constituents, and food additives on cognitive behavior and development. The final section examines foods and supplements that modulate brain function. With a broad range of information presented in a simple and straightforward manner, this book provides an ideal introduction to nutritional neuroscience. The depth of information and comprehensive coverage also make this an essential reference for specialists involved in nutrition, neuroscience, pharmacology, psychology, and related disciplines.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Growing Points in Developmental Science is an ISSBD publication based on the millennium symposia papers published in the International Journal of Behavioral Development in 2000. This collection of overview chapters summarises the state of the art and the way forward for this discipline. Experienced researchers as well as younger, cutting-edge scientists have contributed to this international collection. The topics range from early experience to old age, and include issues in both social and cognitive development. Particular interests are investigated, such as the biological substrates of behavioural development, early experiences in terms of both basic and applied science, and cross-cultural contexts of development. Personality, knowledge and the acquisition of memory are also considered. In each case, the authors survey the history and traditions that have marked their research areas, as well as the current status and outlook. Growing Points in Developmental Science represents expert wisdom rooted in a bird's eye view of the trends and controversies that have helped to shape the discipline, its contributions to science and its application. It is intended as a resource for scientists of different generations interested in developmental science, and will appeal to advanced students and young investigators as well as seasoned researchers.

Experimentalresearch during the past 8-10 years has shifted from andemphasis on mental retardation to an emphasis on behavioralchanges induced by malnutrition. Further, researchers nowconsider the role of environment in cognitive developmentand how malnutrition interferes with the interaction of thechild with its environment. Research on malnutrition inanimals and its relevance to humans is discussed. Specifictopics include: 1) background to the study of malnutritionin relation to child mental development and invironment ; 2) effects of malnutrition and nutrient consumption on thecentral nervous system ; 3) effects of malnutrition onsubprimate behavior, environmental adaptation and learning ; 4) effects of nutrition on human and nonhuman primates.

Book excerpt: Growth, as we conceive it, is the study of change in an organism not yet mature. Differential growth creates form: external form through growth rates which vary from one part of the body to another and one tissue to another; and internal form through the series of time-entrained events which build up in each cell the special ized complexity of its particular function. We make no distinction, then, between growth and development, and if we have not included accounts of differentiation it is simply because we had to draw a quite arbitrary line somewhere. It is only rather recently that those involved in pediatrics and child health have come to realize that growth is the basic science peculiar to their art. It is a science which uses and incorporates the traditional disciplines of anatomy, physiology, biophysics, biochemistry, and biology. It is indeed a part of biology, and the study of human growth is a part of the curriculum of the rejuvenated science of Human Biology. What growth is not is a series of charts of height and weight. Growth standards are useful and necessary, and their construction is by no means void of intellectual challenge. They are a basic instrument in pediatric epidemiology. But they do not appear in this book, any more than clinical accounts of growth disorders. This appears to be the first large handbook-in three volumes-devoted to Human Growth.
