Book excerpt: A 3 x 2 factorial design was used to examine the motivational effects of participation in decision making (PDM) versus goal setting on performance. Seventy-two college students were randomly assigned to one of six conditions. The task selected for the study was a toy assembly project adapted from a business game used in an assessment center. The motivational effects of PDM were isolated from the cognitive by imposing the ideas generated through PDM on another condition. Assigned/participative goals were set in terms of the number of toys that could be produced within a 20-minute period. Goal difficulty was held constant between the two conditions. The results showed a significant main effect for goal setting only. Both forms of goal setting led to performance that was significantly higher than that which occurred in the do best condition. The interaction effect between goal setting and decision making was not significant. (Author).

Book excerpt: Previous research comparing the effects of assigned versus participatively set goals on performance were essentially tests of the null hypothesis in that goal difficulty level was not systematically manipulated. The present laboratory study investigated the effects of assigned versus participatively set goals, and the effects of varying goal difficulty level on an arithmetic task. Eighty-six college students were assigned to either a participative goal condition or one of three assigned goal conditions. In two of the assigned goal conditions participants were assigned goals to those set in the participative condition, the difference being that individuals in one group were assigned goals at random and those in the other group were assigned goals on the basis of their premeasure scores. Participants in the third assigned goal condition were randomly assigned a goal in the top quartile of the goals set participatively. As hypothesized, individuals with hard assigned goals had higher performance than peers with lower goals set in a participative manner. Contrary to modern organizational theory, individuals with participatively set goals did not have higher performance than those with assigned goals of equal difficulty. Personality traits were not found to moderate the effects of goal setting on performance. (Author).

Book excerpt: A unique compendium of international investigations into motivation and performance, this book offers chapters by industrial and organizational psychologists from the United States, Europe, Australia, and Japan as they share their theories, concepts, empirical evidence, and practical evidence regarding the subject. The volume focuses on three distinct themes: * the relationship between motivation and performance * practical examples of building and strengthening the motivating potential with particular attention paid to productivity and the health of the employees * the development of work motivation over time and the change of the relative importance of central variables Work Motivation provides an exceptional blend of modern theoretical approaches, technologically sound techniques for solving practical problems, and empirical results to prove theoretical and technical validities.

And if so, can it be motivated by the anticipation of future events? What role does cognition play in such motivational processes? And, further, what role does motivation play in ongoing cognitive activity? Questions such as these provide the foundation for this book, originally published in 1989. More specifically, the chapters in this book address the question of the utility of goals concepts in studying motivation and social cognition.
