A lack of activity increases the risk of heart disease, colon and breast cancer, diabetes mellitus, hypertension, osteoporosis, anxiety and depression and others diseases. Emerging literature has suggested that in terms of mortality, the global population health burden of physical inactivity approaches that of cigarette smoking. The prevalence and substantial disease risk associated with physical inactivity has been described as a pandemic. The prevalence, health impact, and evidence of changeability all have resulted in calls for action to increase physical activity across the lifespan. In response to the need to find ways to make physical activity a health priority for youth, the Institute of Medicine's Committee on Physical Activity and Physical Education in the School Environment was formed. Its purpose was to review the current status of physical activity and physical education in the school environment, including before, during, and after school, and examine the influences of physical activity and physical education on the short and long term physical, cognitive and brain, and psychosocial health and development of children and adolescents. Educating the Student Body makes recommendations about approaches for strengthening and improving programs and policies for physical activity and physical education in the school environment. This report lays out a set of guiding principles to guide its work on these tasks. These included: recognizing the benefits of instilling life-long physical activity habits in children; the value of using systems thinking in improving physical activity and physical education in the school environment; the recognition of current disparities in opportunities and the need to achieve equity in physical activity and physical education; the importance of considering all types of school environments; the need to take into consideration the diversity of students as recommendations are developed. This report will be of interest to local and national policymakers, school officials, teachers, and the education community, researchers, professional organizations, and parents interested in physical activity, physical education, and health for school-aged children and adolescents.

Book excerpt: Our nation's schools are in a key position to promote regular physical activity through participation in quality physical education programs (Sallis & McKenzie, 1991). The ultimate long-term demonstration of each program's impact is the students' maintenance of an active lifestyle. Physical educators are consistently attempting to find different ways to promote lifetime physical activity within their programs. The pedometer is a useful, inexpensive, objective, and reliable measurement tool that may be used to promote and monitor physical activity. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the total daily physical activity levels of middle school students, and the contribution of physical education lessons. Physical activity levels of 48 middle school students were measured using pedometers during physical education as well as outside of class over a period often school days. A secondary focus was to evaluate the degree to which physical activity levels differed across selected student characteristics (i.e., gender and body composition). The mean number of steps taken by the students was 12,993 per day, and 2,244 per day in physical education. A Pearson correlation was run to determine if there was a relationship between the time factor and the step factor. The correlation between the two was .99, providing further evidence that either time or steps can be used when measuring physical activity levels. A 2 x 2 (BMI x Gender) MANOVA was conducted on the mean number of steps taken during the day and the time spent in physical activity during the day. The results of the MANOVA indicated significant main effects for gender, F(2,43) = 6.73, p.05, and BMI, F(2,43)=4.69, p.05, but no significant interaction between the two. In tests of between-subjects effects, both BMI and gender had significant effects on steps (p=.006,p=.004) and time (p=.0l4,p=.001), respectively. During the study, the students wore the pedometers sealed for the first five days, and unsealed for the last five days. A two-tailed, paired t-test was used to assess if there were any differences between the groups. Neither step counts, t(8) = .75,p.05, nor time, t(8)=.49,p.05, were significantly different between the sealed and unsealed days. Physical education did provide a considerable amount of physical activity for the students (17% of their daily step totals). Our findings also reconfirm, using different methods, what other studies have reported regarding the differences between physical activity levels of males versus females, and 'healthy' versus 'at risk' populations.

Book excerpt: "The purpose of this study was to develop a better understanding of the physical activity behavior of Black female adolescents age 14-18 in the Charlotte, NC public school community by examining the relationship between physical activity and self-efficacy, social support, outcome expectations, and physical environment. The study sample consisted of 96 girls ages 14-19 from a public high school in Charlotte, North Carolina. Participants volunteered to complete a survey with demographic, physical activity (PA), and psychosocial questions. The predictor variables were self-efficacy and physical activity self-efficacy, social support, outcome expectations, and physical environment. The dependent variable was physical activity participation. Correlational analysis was employed to examine the relationship of the four predictor variables to physical activity. Self-efficacy was shown to be correlated with PA. The strongest correlation was between physical activity self-efficacy and PA. Correlations between outcome expectations and PA for the total sample were low and not significant. Total social support, family and friend social support were correlated with PA as well. Physical environment was not significantly related with PA for the Black adolescents in this study. Multiple regression was used to determine the relative strength of the four main predictor variables on the dependent variable of physical activity level. For the total sample, the four predictor variables explained 24% of the variance in physical activity participation. Of these variables, physical activity self-efficacy makes the largest unique contribution (beta=.36) with a significance level of .002. In order to understand PA habits and perceptions among Black adolescent females, the last section of the survey included 14 open-ended questions. Most Black participants understand the health benefits of physical activity, but cited tiring and sweating factors as reasons why they do not participate in physical activity. Findings suggest increasing physical activity self-efficacy and providing social support, as well as allowing girls to have a choice in their physical activity and offering activities they consider fun, may lead to increased physical activity among Black adolescent girls."--Abstract from author supplied metadata.

Book excerpt: Contemporary American youth fail to meet national recommendations for physical activity at alarmingly high rates despite well-established protective effects of physical activity on multiple domains of health. There is an established pattern of disparity in physical activity participation whereby girls, those of lower socioeconomic status and those of African American and Hispanic backgrounds are less apt to report regular physical activity in keeping with national recommendations. Large scale investigations to increase the proportion of highly active youth have yet to realize widespread success. In light of emerging evidence suggesting physical activity levels may begin to decline earlier than previously thought, there is a possibility that research and intervention efforts to date may have approached the problem of declining activity after the risk behavior of inactivity had already been established. Despite numerous investigations into factors associated with physical activity in youth, many questions remain unanswered. Among the considerations that are not well understood is when physical activity levels begin to decline for at-risk subgroups of youth and what modifiable individual, interpersonal and/or environmental-level factors are associated with remaining highly active in these populations. This ecologically-based cross-sectional study represents an initial step toward addressing these considerations among elementary and middle school students. Self-reported primary data were collected from a convenience sample of 321 public school students from the 4th, 6th and 8th grade. Students represent the racial/ethnic and socio-economic groups at greatest risk of not meeting national recommendations for physical activity. Study questionnaires queried a range of factors believed to be associated with physical activity, such as availability of social support, self-efficacy for activity, and perceptions of environmental attributes. In addition, two separate physical activity outcome measures were assessed. Factors associated with physical activity at the univariate level (p>0.2) were included in forward stepwise binary regression models to predict reporting of high physical activity. A significant decrease in the proportion of highly active girls was noted between the 4th and 6th grade groups while the proportion of highly active boys did not differ significantly between grade levels. Among 6th and 8th grade students, the difference in physical activity between genders was significant with males reporting more physical activity than females in each grade level. Distinct variables were associated with highly active students in each grade- and gender-specific regression model. After controlling for all other included variables, high social support was most strongly associated with reporting of high activity among girls while for boys in this sample, perceived normal weight status was the strongest predictor of high activity. Among all students, use of daily active transport to school was also strongly associated with reporting of high physical activity. Future investigations involving younger students and utilizing enhanced, longitudinal designs may provide greater insight into the preliminary findings reported in this study.

Porter, Dissertation Advisor ABSTRACT The purpose of this study was to describe the experience of being physically active for middle-school girls who had reported at least an average level of physical activity (PA) and above-average barriers to PA on standardized measures of those variables. The aims of the cross-sectional study were to describe each girl's intentions (what she was trying to do in relation to her experience), to detail the personal-social context of each girl's experience, and to describe the phenomena that structured the experience for the sample. The 10 participants were Caucasian female students at two middle schools in the Midwest, who met modified inclusion criteria for PA level and barriers to PA. Two in-depth interviews were done with each girl within a 4-week period. Interviews were recorded, transcribed, and analyzed using Porter's method of descriptive phenomenology. Findings were organized in a taxonomy of the phenomena of the experience and a parallel taxonomy of the personal-social context of the experience. There were six features of the personal-social context of the experience of being physically active and four phenomena of the experience for the sample. Although there were limitations to this work, the contributions were important. It was recommended that researchers forego use of the term "barriers to physical activity" in research with middle-school girls and focus instead on exploring "things that make it harder for you to exercise." Practitioners should consider and seek to understand the unique circumstances that can impact the experience of physical activity for each middle-school girl. Researchers should involve middle-school girls in creating empirically valid measures for physical activity screening and in developing interventions to enhance physical activity for girls in specific settings and for their age-peers.

Book excerpt: Health policy experts recommend that adolescents engage in at least 60 minutes of physical activity per day. In California, fewer adolescents are reaching these guidelines, with declining activity levels as age increases. A higher prevalence of inactivity in addition to rising obesity rates prompts policy concern because of the increased risk of developing chronic health conditions such as Type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease, which affect long-term health. There is a national policy debate occurring about the declining emphasis on physical education within schools, given evidence that it has the potential to improve exercise habits. From a California standpoint, my research explores whether more physical education participation causes increases in adolescent exercise behaviors, to determine why is there a declining emphasis on physical education, and to identify the primary policy and practical barriers to increasing time for high school students to spend in physical education. Using 2,799 adolescent observations from the 2011-2012 California Health Interview Survey, I conduct a regression analysis to quantify the influence of high school physical education participation on overall activity levels. Since many factors influence activity behaviors, which I cannot fully capture in a quantitative analysis, I also conduct nine interviews across state and local education entities to explore the policy and practical barriers to investing time into physical education. My regression results show that physical education participation does not influence the choice to exercise, but among adolescents who are at least somewhat active, it does influence the amount that they choose to engage in each day. Combined with my interview results, I confirm prior literature that the following socio-demographic and environmental factors influence adolescent activity levels: gender, age, income, neighborhood safety, access to activity opportunities after school, and education support of quality physical education. My results add to prior research, showing that having an athletic role model positively influences activity behaviors. Based on my findings, I recommend investing in an educational culture that values physical education as an instructional priority and in community partnerships to create more opportunities for adolescent activity outside of school hours. Ensuring that physical education is an instructional priority requires investing in both the quality and quantity of the program, creating more professional development opportunities, ensuring that facilities are adequate and physical education teachers hold the proper credentials to teach the standards-based curriculum. Based on findings that resource discrepancies pose greater barriers for schools serving a large proportion of low-income students, districts can effectively collaborate with community members to promote activity at the broader local level through use of required Local Control and Accountability Plans (LCAP) to ensure that their spending matches state priorities for students.
