This book was released on 2004 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of mental imagery practice on the performance of selected psychomotor tennis skills of postsecondary students. The principal investigator/researcher conducted a quasi-experimental quantitative study involving a post hoc statistical analysis. The population included six beginning tennis activity classes, for a total of 138 subjects, who participated during the fall 2003 semester on the campus of a small, private midwestern university. The instrument used in this study was the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance Tennis skills Test authored by Larry Hensley. This instrument was selected due to its exclusive design for the testing of tennis skills as well as validity and reliability. An alpha level of .05 was used for all analyses. The principal investigator/researcher conducted a one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and paired t-tests to examine the mean changes among and within the three groups studied. The results of the study were the following: (a) the control group, Group 3, showed a significant difference between the pretest to posttest, however, not as significant as either Group 1 or Group 2; (b) the group that incorporated the practice of mental imagery prior to physical practice, Group 1, demonstrated a significant difference between the pretest to posttest, recording the highest gains among all groups tested; and (c) the group that incorporated the practice of mental imagery after physically practicing, Group 2, showed a significant difference-- more than Group 3 but less than Group 1. These results are supported by previous research study investigations. The results that both experimental groups employing the use of mental imagery practice in conjugation with physical practice are superior to physical practice alone, are congruent with the literature reviewed. The results that indicated Group 1 using mental imagery prior to physical practice as superior to Group 2 using mental imagery after physical practice and Group 3 physical practice only, can also be found in the literature"--Abstract.

Book excerpt: It has long been known that almost all elite athletes use imagery and that most sport psychologists apply imagery in working with athletes. But most material on the subject has been, to this point, relegated to single chapters in books, to journal articles, or to conference proceedings. Now Imagery in Sport addresses the breadth of what researchers and practitioners in sport psychology know about the topic, and it treats each issue in depth, considering current theories and research on imagery and its application in sport. The reference also addresses future directions in research and practice for imagery in sport. In doing so, Imagery in Sport provides the most comprehensive look at the state of imagery and its uses in sport today. The authors take readers step by step through understanding, investigating, applying, and advancing imagery in sport. The text includes the following: -Sample scripts, preperformance suggestions, and sport-specific and site-specific tips -Presentation and critical analysis of 10 well-known theoretical frameworks for understanding imagery -A full chapter devoted to understanding and successfully using the available measures of imagery in sport, including how to administer imagery-ability measures Imagery in Sport takes complex theories and presents them clearly, using examples from everyday sport contexts. The book helps readers become familiar with the current knowledge about the topic and learn to view it with a critical eye. And it provides practicing sport psychologists with guidelines and strategies for using imagery to help athletes improve their performances.

The Manual is designed for sport psychologists, coaches, athletes, or anyone who seeks to understand or quantify the use of mental imagery in sport. Features: A 4-page reproduction of the Sport Imagery Questionnaire in an easy-to-photocopy format, complete with instructions and specific rating chart; A 'Scoring the SIQ' section to calculate imagery performance; A brief overview of the SIQ clearly and explicitly outlining its purpose and function; 3 comprehensive chapters dedicated to understanding imagery, explaining the methods involved in both developing and successfully utilising the SIQ, and the psychometric properties and normative data of the questionnaire itself.

Gallwey shows us how to overcome these obstacles by trusting the intuitive wisdom of our bodies and achieving a state of “relaxed concentration.” With chapters devoted to trusting the self and changing habits, it is no surprise then, that Gallwey’s method has had an impact far beyond the confines of the tennis court.
