Book Synopsis Distinct Identities by : Nadia E. Brown
Download or read book Distinct Identities written by Nadia E. Brown and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-14 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Minority women in the United States draw from their unique personal experiences, born of their identities, to impact American politics. Whether as political elites or as average citizens, minority women demonstrate that they have a unique voice that more often than not centers on their visions of justice, equality, and fairness. In this volume, Dr. Nadia E. Brown and Sarah Allen Gershon seek to present studies of minority women that highlight how they are similar and dissimilar to other groups of women or minorities, as well as variations within groups of minority women. Current demographic and political trends suggest that minority populations-specifically minority women-will be at the forefront of shaping U.S. politics. Yet, scholars still have very little understanding of how these populations will behave politically. This book provides a detailed view of how minority women will utilize their sheer numbers, collective voting behavior, policy preferences, and roles as elected officials to impact American politics. The scholarship on intersectionality in this volume seeks to push beyond disciplinary constraints to think more holistically about the politics of identity.

Book Synopsis Mind the Backlash: Gender Discrimination and Sexism in Contemporary Societies by : Hilde Coffe
Download or read book Mind the Backlash: Gender Discrimination and Sexism in Contemporary Societies written by Hilde Coffe and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2023-09-26 with total page 155 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Decades of campaigns and policy efforts have brought significant progress in women's economic and political status and pushed gender equality up the global policy agenda. The goal of gender equality, however, still remains largely out of reach, as illustrated by the recent wave of women's protests against sexual harassment, assault and gender violence (e.g. #MeToo movement). Some European countries (e.g. Poland, Hungary and Lithuania) have even seen their performance on gender equality backslide in recent years, and in parallel to calls for increased equality, a wave of mobilisation against gender equality has appeared in the public discourse. Conservative, authoritarian and populist voices in many democracies are now contesting the equal participation of men and women in society under the auspices of a "war on gender ideology." This backlash against women's empowerment carries considerable implications for anti-discrimination laws, policies protecting women against domestic violence, reproductive health and the establishment of gender quotas. Given the "backlash" against gender observed in various countries around the globe, we argue that now is a critical time to revisit and broaden our knowledge about gender discrimination, gender equality and sexism. Our proposed Research Topic will provide a gender perspective to illustrate and understand the recent illiberal turn in politics in a variety of contexts. Taking a comparative approach, we aim at improving our understanding of how sexism, discrimination and gender equality operate at the societal level, and how they shape broader social and political views. At the individual level, we will study the current, seemingly opposing forces—for and against gender equality— by analysing the antecedents, predispositions, experiences and motivations explaining and underpinning these attitudes towards different ways of gender equality (sexism and discrimination).

Book Synopsis Feminist Measures in Survey Research by : Catherine E. Harnois
Download or read book Feminist Measures in Survey Research written by Catherine E. Harnois and published by SAGE Publications. This book was released on 2012-01-18 with total page 185 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How can multiracial feminism inform social science survey research? What would it mean, in practical terms, to bring an "intersectional" approach to survey design and statistical analysis? How might such an approach change our understanding of the social world? Feminist Measures in Survey Research offers a new approach for bridging feminist theory and quantitative social science research. Catherine E. Harnois demonstrates how a multiracial feminist perspective can inform virtually every aspect of the research process, from survey design and statistical modeling to the frameworks used to interpret the results. Harnois argues for an interdisciplinary approach to social research, rooted in multiracial feminist theorizing. Such an approach, she suggests, enables a critical reexamination of the assumptions embedded in everyday research practices. It also provides a new and important framework for critiquing and producing quality survey research. Catherine E. Harnois was honored with the 2012 Distinguished Article Award from the American Sociological Association. This award recognizes scholars who have made a distinguished and significant contribution to the development of the integrative field of race, gender, and class through the publication of a journal article or book chapter on the "cutting edge" of sociological inquiry.

Download or read book Anti-Asian Racism and Public Health written by and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2024-02-20 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Racist and xenophobic hate against Asian Americans in the midst of the COVID pandemic has been a significant threat to Asian Americans’ health – stemming from a deeply rooted Yellow Peril ideology, which racializes Asians as a threat to United States and Western culture including re-imagining Asians as a diseased public health threat. Studies have documented that Asian Americans who have experienced anti-Asian racism during the pandemic report that they are more concerned about the racism than the pandemic itself, and nearly one in five Asian Americans who experienced racism display racial trauma – the psychological and emotional harm caused by racism.
