This book was released on 2015 with total page 151 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The effects of different vegetation control practices on tree-weed interactions and associated establishment and early tree growth were investigated in 1-3 year old hybrid poplar plantations containing Walker poplar (Populus deltoides x (P. laurifolia x P. nigra)) and its progeny Okanese poplar (Walker x (P. laurifolia x P. nigra)). Two field experiments were established on research sites in northeastern Alberta during two years (2012-2013). Tree survival and growth, herbaceous vegetation cover and composition, soil nutrient availability, soil water content, soil temperature and light availability were measured over two growing seasons. Results showed that an extended full year of chemical and mechanical site preparation prior to tree planting reduced weed impacts on resource availability and improved tree performance. Improved biotic and abiotic growing conditions included the sustained control of understory vegetation, in particular competitive perennial forbs and graminoids, as well as increased availability of light and nutrients. Results also highlighted the need to effectively control perennial rather than annual herbaceous competitors. The findings further demonstrated a spatial and temporal shift in the competitive effects of neighboring vegetation. Trees competed primarily aboveground with weeds (i.e. for light) near the stem (

Book excerpt: Yellow-poplar can be established on a wide variety of sites with bare-rooted seedlings and standard planting techniques. Many past plantings have performed poorly because substandard seedlings have been planted on unsuitable sites and competing vegetation has not been adequately controlled. Research over the past two decades, however, provides workable guides for site selection, planting practices, and competition control. Enough is now known that the forester can avoid or overcome the most common causes of failure.

This book was released on 1996 with total page 560 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Poplar is increasingly recognized as an excellent model tree for the study of tree growth and its underlying physiology and genetics. By studying trees of the genus Populus (poplars, cottonwoods, aspens), which in their native ecosystems play a major role in the re-colonization of sites after disturbances, new insights have been gained into plantation culture and the development of improved cultivars. Of the 20 chapters in this publication, editored by an international group of researchers, one section deals with systematics, genetics, genetic manipulation and biotic interactions of Populus, while the other deals with stress response and the physiology of growth and productivity" --
