Book excerpt: The purpose of this action research, mixed method study was to examine to what extent if any, grade retention impacts students academic success at Stallion High School. Grade retention and social promotion have been compared throughout educational history. When social promotion was called to an end, grade retention was used in its place. Although the negative implications of grade retention were identified dating back to the 1930s, it is still a widely utilized intervention strategy today. Stallion High School has experienced an increase of grade retention amongst its ninth grade population. In an effort to combat this growing phenomenon, I sought to investigate the effectiveness of grade retention as an intervention strategy using the following research questions: 1. To what extent does grade retention impact future academic success? 2. What factors do students perceive as having hindered their ability to successfully complete the ninth grade? 3. What steps if any need to be addressed in order to reduce the occurrence of grade retention? Data was collected using student and faculty on-line surveys, administrator/supervisor interview and archival data. The findings revealed that grade retention had a negative impact on students future academic success. Students and faculty alike identified the three main causes of grade retention at SHS. They identified: grades and/or grading policy, attendance and/or attendance policy and study habits. Although faculty members and students identified grade retention as a problem at SHS, administrators/supervisors believed the contrary. Administrators/supervisors do not believe that grade retention is a problem at SHS and students in fact have all resources needed to succeed at SHS. The contradiction in these beliefs draws attention to the fact that administrators/supervisors work in a departmental fashion and are not aware of the growing retention rates. Faculty members and students provide suggestions to address the negative impact of grade retention. Alternatives to grade retention as an intervention strategy are also provided.

Book excerpt: Grade retention is the practice of keeping low-achieving students at the same grade level for an additional year to provide them with extra time to catch up, as opposed to social promotion, the practice of promoting students regardless of whether they have mastered the grade content. As part of an increasing emphasis on standards and accountability, many districts now use standardized test scores as one of the main criteria for grade retention. However, studies have shown that students do not appear to benefit from being retained and, indeed, that retention may increase their risk of dropping out of school. In 2003-2004, the New York City Department of Education (NYCDOE) implemented a new promotion policy for 3rd-grade students, which was later extended to 5th, 7th, and 8th graders. NYCDOE asked RAND to conduct an independent longitudinal evaluation to provide evidence of the program's impact on 5th graders. This report, one of in a series documenting the results of the study (conducted between March 2006 and August 2009) identifies and reviews 91 studies that examine the effect of grade retention on a variety of student academic and socioemotional outcomes.

Book excerpt: Research reveals that grade retention as a sole intervention for low achieving students is not sufficient to improve student achievement (Jimerson, 200l). This study used a qualitative design (Marshall & Rossman, 2011) to examine the phenomenon of grade retention and intervention approaches for low achieving students in Connecticut school districts with at least one public high school. The study relied on the Tripod Framework (Ferguson, 2008) to explain the factors that impact student achievement and grade retention. Public documents, including state policies and district information were examined to identify 15 districts that remediate low performing students with interventions other than grade retention or social promotion. This study's participants suggested that the most effective interventions for low achieving students are: extra help, parental involvement, continuous support, student involvement, peer support, Response to Intervention (RTI), and extra-curricular activities. This study used a purposeful sample of school leaders, however future research should explore other members of the school community, including teachers and school counselors.

Retention has remained relatively popular, as states and local governments are placing a stronger emphasis on teacher and district accountability (Stipek & Lombardo, 2014). The current sociopolitical setting emphasizes higher standards and culpability, as school systems are linking teacher effectiveness to student scores on standardized testing such as PARCC and subject based exams (Jimerson, et al., 2006). With these higher standards grade retention has been used as an intervention for student struggling academically, resulting in failing grade. Additionally, schools have been inclined to use retention for students to address behavioral concerns that are too great for promotion (Jimerson, Woehr, & Kaufman, 2007). As students begin to miss classes frequently as a result of suspensions and expulsions, behavioral and academic concerns become too great for social promotion. Research focusing on grade retention has been ongoing for decades concentrating on the academic achievement and social emotional outcomes of retained students. Results are unambiguous and indicate that grade retention offers insufficient benefits to the retained student and may create adverse outcomes. Retention as an intervention halts the linear progression of moving onto the next grade and requires students to repeat the current grade.
