This book was released on 2010 with total page 62 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study sought out to test the effectiveness of using electrical muscle stimulation (EMS) on increasing strength and endurance of the gluteus muscles compared to volitional exercise. Seventy-two female volunteers between the ages of 20 and 60 years old were assigned to either an EMS (n=24), volitional exercise (n=24), or control group (n=24). The EMS group underwent stimulation 5 days per week for 30 minutes each day at the highest tolerable level for 6 weeks. The volitional exercise group completed 3 sets of 10 quadruped hip extensions on each leg, 5 times per week, for 6 weeks. Subjects were tested at the beginning, mid-point, and end of the study. Isometric strength of the gluteal muscles was tested using a Chatillon CSD 200 Dynamometer; endurance was measured using a hip bridge movement. The stimulation group had a 15% increase in gluteal strength compared to only a 9% increase of gluteal strength in the volitional exercise group. Gluteal endurance increased by 29% in the stimulation group compared to 26% in the volitional exercise group. The findings of this study show that there were no significant differences in gluteal strength or endurance between groups.

This book was released on 1965 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The main purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of repetitive, ELECTRICAL, TETANIC STIMULATION ON THE STRENGTH AND FATIGUE OF THE ULNAR INNERVATED MUSCLES OF THE NON-DOMINANT HAND IN HEALTHY ADULTS. TEN MALES AND EIGHT FEMALES VOLUNTEERED TO PARTICIPATE IN THE EXPERIMENT. THEY WERE DIVIDED INTO THREE GROUPS: A (N = 9) UNDERWENT A DAILY, SIX SECOND, TETANIC CONTRACTION; V (l\l= 5) EXERCISED BY DOING A DAILY, SIX SECOND, MAXIMUM, VOLUNTARY, ISOMETRIC CONTRACTION, AND C (N = 4) ACTED AS A CONTROL GROUP AND THEY CARRIED ON THEIR NORMAL EVERYDAY ACTIVITY. THE ULNAR INNERVATED MUSCLES OF THE DOMINANT HAND AS WELL AS THE NON-DOMINANT HAND OF ALL THE SUBJECTS WERE MEASURED FOR THE FOLLOWING PARAMETERS,* (l) GRIP TENSION, (2) TETANIC TENSION, (3) MERTON t S TENSION, AND (4) FATIGUE-TENSION RATIO. THE MEASURES TAKEN ON THE DOMINANT HAND ACTED AS AN ADDITIONAL CONTROL GROUP. The subjects that underwent electrical stimulation (Group A) showed SIGNIFICANT INCREASES IN TWO OF THE FOUR MEASURES - GRIP TENSION AND TETANIC tension. Group V subjects, who underwent voluntary isometric exercise, did not DEMONSTRATE STATISTICALLY SIGNIFICANT GAINS IN ANY OF THE FOUR PARAMETERS UNDER D I SCUSS I ON. Current theories of strength development are discussed in the light of THESE FINDINGS.

Download or read book Concurrent Aerobic and Strength Training written by Moritz Schumann and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-10-31 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides an extensive guide for exercise and health professionals, students, scientists, sport coaches, athletes of various sports and those with a general interest in concurrent aerobic and strength training. Following a brief historical overview of the past decades of research on concurrent training, in section 1 the epigenetic as well as physiological and neuromuscular differences of aerobic and strength training are discussed. Thereafter, section 2 aims at providing an up-to-date analysis of existing explanations for the interference phenomenon, while in section 3 the training-methodological difficulties of combined aerobic and strength training are elucidated. In section 4 and 5, the theoretical considerations reviewed in previous sections will then be practically applied to specific populations, ranging from children and elderly to athletes of various sports. Concurrent Aerobic and Strength Training: Scientific Basics and Practical Applications is a novel book on one of the “hot topics” of exercise training. The Editors' highest priority is to make this book an easily understandable and at the same time scientifically supported guide for the daily practice.
Book Synopsis Physiology of Strength by : Dr. Theodor Hettinger
Download or read book Physiology of Strength written by Dr. Theodor Hettinger and published by Pickle Partners Publishing. This book was released on 2017-06-28 with total page 135 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1961, “[T]his book is the result of ten years of research and experiment in the problems of muscle strength and muscle training at the Max-Planck-Institut für Arbeitsphysiologie, Dortmund, Germany supplemented by further work at the Lankenau Hospital, Division of Research, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. There is provided the present status of these problems, and there is demonstrated how muscle strength may be built and maintained with a minimum of time and effort. “The methods used are adaptable, with suitable modification, to children, to average young people, to athletes in training, to sedentary workers and older persons who wish to maintain bodily strength, and to those who have undergone surgery and need rehabilitation of the muscle structure—in short, to anyone who wishes to develop and maintain good muscle tone. “A strong and well-built body not only has pleasing appearance, it permits the undertaking of arduous physical activities or active sports without undue fatigue, and with real enjoyment. “It is the author’s hope that in this age of fast living and nervous tension, when there often seems neither time nor place for extensive exercise, this book will assist those who wish to maintain bodily strength and fitness—simply, at home, without elaborate equipment—on a do-it-yourself basis. It should prove of special benefit to teachers of physical education and rehabilitation.”—THEODOR HETTINGER, M.D.

Book Synopsis The Effects of Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation on Abdominal Strength and Endurance and Core Strength by : Julie A. Olson
Download or read book The Effects of Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation on Abdominal Strength and Endurance and Core Strength written by Julie A. Olson and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study was designed to evaluate the effects of self-administered neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES) on changes in abdominal muscle strength and endurance and core strength. Fifty-three adults were randomly assigned into high intensity (HI: n=27) or low intensity (LI: n=26) groups. The NMES device for the LI group had been altered so that subjects felt some tactile sensation, but the intensity was not sufficient to elicit a muscular contraction. All subjects stimulated their abdominals 5 days per week (30 minutes per session) for 6 weeks and refrained from engaging in any additional abdominal exercises during the study. Subjects were tested at baseline, 2, 4, and 6 weeks. The HI group had a significantly greater increase in strength at 4 weeks (19%) and 6 weeks (29%) compared to the LI group. The HI group completed more curl-ups than the LI group at 2 weeks (62%) and 4 weeks (118%). Both groups had a significant increase in core strength over the course of the study, with no difference between groups. Results of the current study indicate that high intensity NMES can significantly increase abdominal strength and endurance compared to LI intensity (control) stimulation.
