Book excerpt: Several exercise training methodologies have been studied for their effects on performance in overhead sports such as baseball and tenis. Multiple studies have demonstrated that lower body closed kinetic chain (CKC) exercises produce greater improvements in performance compared to open kinetic chain (OKC) training. However, evidence comparing the effects of upper body OKC and CKC training on performance is limited. The purpose of this study was to compare the effects of an upper body CKC resistance training program to an OKC resistance training program on maximal serve velocity (MSV), average serve velocity (ASV), seated 1-arm medicine all shot put distance (MBT), 3 repetition maximum (RM) bench press strength (BP), push-up repetitions (PU), and modified pull-up repetitions (MPU) in competitive junior tennis players. Sixteen subjects performed a total body resistance training program 3 times per week for 8 weeks. The results of this study showed that both OKC and CKC training produced improvements in both ASV and MSV but there was no significant difference between groups for either ASV or MSV. However, there was a difference between groups in both dominant and non-dominant MBT with the CKC training group producing significantly greater improvements. Both groups showed improvements in BP, PU and MPU with no significant differences between training groups. These results suggest that both OKC and CKC upper body training can be used to improve upper body strength ad serve velocity in competitive junior tennis players.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of same-day strength training on velocity and accuracy of a tennis serve among five female Division I intercollegiate athletes at the second and sixth week of a strength training program. Velocity and accuracy of 20 tennis serves were measured approximately four hours after a morning split-body (lower legs and trunk) strength training session termed the lift-day (LD) and were compared to measures taken on days that no lifting took place, termed the non-lift day (NLD). For each test day, velocity was multiplied by accuracy to provide an overall serve performance score for each NLD and LD. An ANOVA revealed that there was no significant difference in any of the measured variables between the NLD and the LD at any time period throughout the study. A mean serve performance score difference between NLD (77.56) and LD (78.05) of 0.49 was not statistically different [p = 0.84]. The results of this study suggest that female collegiate tennis players may strength-train with no significant effect on same-day serve performance following adequate recovery.

Book excerpt: Abstract: The influence of muscular fatigue on tennis serve performance within regular training sessions is unclear. Therefore, the aim of the present study was to examine the within-session sequence of the tennis serve in youth tennis. Twenty-five young male (14.9 ± 0.9 years) and female (14.5 ± 0.9 years) players participated in this within-subject crossover study, and they were randomly but sex-matched assigned to different training sequences (serve exercise before tennis training (BTS) or after tennis training (ATS)). Pre- and post-tests included serve velocity performance and accuracy, shoulder strength, and range-of-motion (ROM) performance (internal/external rotation). Results showed that after one week of serve training conducted following the ATS sequence, significant decreases were found in serve performance (e.g., speed and accuracy), with standardized differences ranging from d = 0.29 to 1.13, as well as the shoulder function (strength [d = 0.20 to 1.0] and ROM [d = 0.17 to 0.31]) in both female and male players, compared to the BTS sequence. Based on the present findings, it appears more effective to implement serve training before the regular tennis training in youth players. If applied after training, excessive levels of fatigue may cause shoulder imbalances that could be related to an increased injury risk
