Book excerpt: The effects of heterogeneous and homogenous chemical reactions upon compressible laminar boundary layer heat transfer are treated. The boundary layer equations including the species conservation equations are reduced to a set of ordinary differential equations using the method of Li and Nagamatsu for seeking similar solutions. The reduced equations are then solved for the special case of frozen gas phase reactions assuming that heterogeneous and homogenous reactions occur at the surface. The effects of density and transport properties variation due to the temperature and mixture composition variation in the boundary layer are taken into account. A general expression for surface heat transfer rate is then derived which accounts for the effects of the mass transfer accompanying the heterogeneous surface reactions and the heats of reaction. Book excerpt: A complete discussion is presented of the chemically reacting laminar boundary layer. Included in the study are separate homogeneous and hetergeneous reactions; additionally there is considered the problem of simultaneous gas phase and wall reaction. The basic solution, under conditions of unit transport properties, i.e., mass densityviscosity product constant, Prandtl number and Schmidt unity, were derived using previous devised operator techniques. For gas phase reaction the solution for the species distribution is seen to reduce to an integral equation; the temperature arising by quadrature. It is shown that simple first order results for chemistry of the usual complexity occuring in hypersonic boundary layer flows can be obtained without resort to large scale computation. The flow over a catalytic wall are derived from unit solutions to the basic problem. Using the present techniques any distribution of wall catalycity is permissable including discontinuities. Results of this analysis are shown to agree well with previous solutions. In all cases extension to non-unity transport properties are presented. Except in limited studies these extensions are not carried out because analyticity of all solutions was desired. Since no previous solution to the combined problem are available, new first order results were obtained corresponding to the leading edge solution. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Laser Cutting Process: Analysis and Applications presents a comprehensive understanding of the laser cutting process and its practical applications. The book includes modeling, such as thermal and stress analysis, along with lamp parameter analysis for kerf width predictions and their practical applications, such as laser cutting of metallic and non-metallic materials and assessment of quality. The book provides analytical considerations for laser cutting, the importance of the affecting parameters, stress levels formed in the cutting section, cutting efficiency and cut morphology and metallurgy. It is designed to be used by individuals working in laser machining and high energy processing. Fills the gap between a fundamental understanding of the laser cutting process and the shortcomings of the industrial (practical) applications Discusses new developments in the laser cutting process of difficult to cut materials Includes thermal analysis for various metallic and non-metallic materials Provides information on Quality Assessment Methods

This book was released on 2013 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The reduction of drag and aerodynamic heating caused by boundary layer transition is of central interest for the development of hypersonic vehicles. Receptivity to flow perturbation in the form of Tollmien-Schlichting (TS) wave growth often determines the first stage of the transition process, which can be delayed by depositing specific excitations into the boundary layer. Weakly ionized Dielectric Barrier Discharge (DBD) actuators are being investigated as possible sources of such excitations, but little is known today about their interaction with high-speed flows. In this framework, the first part of the thesis is dedicated to a receptivity study of laminar compressible boundary layers over a flat plate by linear stability analysis following an adjoint operator formulation, under DBD representative excitations assumed independent of flow conditions. The second part of the work concentrates on the development of a coupled plasma-Navier and Stokes solver targeted at the study of supersonic flow and compressibility effects on DBD forcing and non-parallel receptivity. The linear receptivity study of quasi-parallel compressible flows reveals several interesting features such as a significant shift of the region of maximum receptivity deeper into the flow at high Mach number and strong wave amplitude reduction compared to incompressible flows. The response to DBD relevant excitation distributions and to variations of the base flow conditions and system length scales follows these trends. Observed absolute amplitude changes and relative sensitivity modifications between source types are related to the evolution of the offset between forcing peak profile and relevant adjoint mode maximum. The analysis highlights the crucial importance of designing and placing the actuator in a way that matches its force field to the position of maximum boundary layer receptivity for the specific flow conditions of interest. In order to address the broad time and length scale spectrum inherent to the compressible flow-plasma problem, a solver has been developed using a novel Adaptive Mesh Refinement (AMR) algorithm based on the Chombo design for the solution of partial differential equations. Its embedded boundary formalism is utilized to solve the electrostatic potential in the complete domain including the DBD dielectric layer. The program allows accounting for non-equilibrium electron energization and resulting effect on transport and chemical reactions, with air or helium chemistry parametrization. Preliminary direct discharge test cases are reported for the latter.
