Book excerpt: The purpose of this study is to examine mathematics anxiety during the transition from elementary school to middle school and address whether providing honors math classes contributes to mathematics anxiety. In this quantitative study, the two research questions were: to what extent do honors math courses contribute to students’ mathematics anxiety who qualify for honors courses during the transition from elementary to middle school? And, to what extent does recent mathematics performance relate to students’ mathematics anxiety in the transition from elementary to middle school? Mathematics anxiety was examined through the motivational theory of expectancy-value, which explores the relationship between individual beliefs and achievement. Most studies agree that mathematics anxiety increases in adolescence, however the reason for the increased anxiety is not clear. In sixth grade, students participated in a Likert-scale survey called the Math Anxiety Scale for Children (MASC). The research participants completed the survey two additional times after the transition to seventh grade. The data were analyzed using repeated-measures analysis of variance, comparing the responses of students in academic math to the data of students in honors math courses in middle school and how the responses changed over time. The statistically significant increase in overall mathematics anxiety in the transition from elementary to middle school was consistent with existing research. The study also indicated the increase in evaluation anxiety was significantly greater for students in the honors course when compared to students in the academic math course. Students in the academic course have consistently higher problem-solving anxiety throughout the study. These differences in anxiety can be used to further the understanding of mathematics anxiety and what can be done to remediate mathematics anxiety and its effect on mathematics achievement.

Book excerpt: Middle school students with mathematics anxiety often struggle with math achievement, self-confidence, and behavior problems like avoidance and defiance. Not only can these students struggle in math class, but many continue to struggle with these problems into adulthood. This study reviews the connections between math anxiety, achievement, mindset, motivation and students' perception of their parents' involvement. To collect data, student math scores from the Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium (SBAC) were gathered and a survey was conducted with sixth through eight grade students about math anxiety, mindset, motivation and parental involvement. Then, correlations were calculated to discover whether there was a relationship between math anxiety and each of the other factors. It was found that all of the factors had a statistically significant relationship with math anxiety. The negative correlation between achievement and math anxiety was found to be consistent with past studies, while other results were consistent with the hypotheses based on the research. The results of this study have important implications for middle school teachers. Teachers who learn to identify students struggling with high levels of math anxiety early will be able to help students cope with how the anxiety manifests in the classroom and how to manage their behavior in appropriate ways.

For example, in physiology (the scientific study of the normal function in living systems such as biology), researchers may use “electrical and chemical stimulation of the brain, the recording of electrical brain-wave activity with the electroencephalograph, and lesion techniques, where a portion of the brain (usually of a laboratory animal) is destroyed and subsequent changes in motivation are noted” (Petri & Cofer, 2017). Physiological studies mainly conducted with animals, other than humans, have revealed the significance of particular brain structures in the control of fundamental motives such as hunger, thirst, sex, aggression, and fear. In psychology, researchers may study the individuals’ behaviors to understand their actions. In sociology, researchers may examine how individuals’ interactions influence their behavior. For instance, in the classroom students and teachers behave in expected ways, which may differ when they are outside the classroom. Saracho (2003) examined the students’ academic achievement when they matched or mismatched their teachers’ way of thinking. She identified both the teachers and students individual differences and defined consistencies in their cognitive processes. In philosophy, researchers can study the individuals’ theoretical position such as supporting Maslow’s (1943) concept that motivation can create behaviors that augments motivation in the future. Abraham H. Maslow’s theory of self-actualization supports this theoretical position (Petri & Cofer, 2017). These areas and others are represented in this volume. This volume is devoted to understanding mutual and contemporary themes in the individuals’ motivation and its relationship to cognition. The current literature covers several methods to the multifaceted relationships between motivational and cognitive processes. Comprehensive reviews of the literature focus on prominent cognitive perspectives on motivation with young children, which includes ages from birth to eight years of age. The chapters in this special volume review and critically analyze the literature on several aspects of the relationships between motivational and cognitive processes and demonstrates the breadth and theoretical effectiveness of this domain. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to examine the mediating role that math self-efficacy plays in the relationship between math anxiety and achievement among eighth grade students. Understanding the impact of self-efficacy on school motivation during adolescence is important because a decline in academic self-efficacy often begins during middle school. According to social cognitive theory, both math self-efficacy and math anxiety are variables that are associated with student performance. A correlational design was utilized in order to examine these relationships. Two self-reports were administered to the students in order to quantify levels of math anxiety and math self-efficacy. The students' most current grades in the subject of math were also incorporated into this study as the criterion variable. Results demonstrated that all three variables were significantly correlated and in the expected directions. Regression analyses revealed that although math anxiety was a significant predictor of achievement, math self-efficacy mediated the relationship between math anxiety and achievement. These results are consistent with those hypothesized by social cognitive theory. Despite the fact that mandated standardized testing is increasing in our schools, the primary implication of this study is that students' cognitions about their abilities in math are more important than their emotions or feelings about the subject of math. It is hoped that the results will help educators identify those students who may need additional assistance in order to become self-sufficient learners and confident in their abilities. Educators can also benefit by becoming aware of these other factors that can inhibit student learning.
