Book excerpt: Dating violence in ethnic minority populations is an understudied phenomenon and little attention has been paid to the experiences of Mexican American youth; less research has been done on how those experiences alter perceptions and acceptance of participation in prevention programs. This study advances knowledge on how Mexican American adolescents view dating violence prevention programs and how cultural beliefs and values may hinder or encourage effective participation. Focus groups (N = 9) were form with Mexican American youth aged 15-17 years separated by gender and acculturation status (Mexican Oriented/Bicultural/Anglo Oriented), as determined previously by acculturation scores measured by the Acculturation Rating Scale for Mexican Americans (ARMSA; 0 or below = Mexican Oriented, 0-1 = Bicultural, 1 or above = Anglo Oriented). Several themes emerged throughout the focus group discussions that were derived from culturally-based needs. Mexican American adolescents made recommendations for program development (e.g., a broad curriculum beyond the topic of dating violence) and delivery (e.g., barriers to participation, the implications of peer involvement) within the context of their cultural values and needs. Low acculturated and bicultural teens identified specific cultural needs and their relevance within a dating violence prevention program. However, across all groups, adolescents felt that the needs of Mexican American youth were similar to other youth in regards to dating violence prevention programs. Implications for how social work can best design and implement prevention programs for Mexican American adolescents are discussed.

Book excerpt: Immigrants such as Mexican immigrants face unique challenges in integrating in the workplace. Despite this challenge, research on the experience of immigrants in the workplace seems limited, especially when examining the impact of their cultural orientations in the workplace. One area that had been usually neglected in the 'local' diversity management field is an immigrant's acculturation and the acculturation strategies used to adjust in the new host country. Consequently, empirical research on the antecedents of acculturation in the workplace is virtually non-existent. Furthermore, there is the need to examine how acculturation strategies may impact other immigrant attitudes beyond previously discussed ones (e.g., job satisfaction) in the workplace. Therefore, this study empirically examines how cultural identity salience and perceived workplace discrimination influence acculturation strategies in Mexican immigrants. Furthermore, contributing to the effect different acculturation strategies have on workplace attitudes, the study examines how acculturation strategies affect perceived Person-Organization fit and Person-Workgroup fit. A stepwise solution was used to test hypotheses. First, acculturation strategies were identified using a latent profile analysis. Second, hierarchical linear regression was used to examine the influence of cultural identity salience on perceived Person-Organization fit and Person-Workgroup fit. Third, hierarchical multinomial logistic regression was performed to examine the influence of cultural identity salience and perceived workplace discrimination on acculturation strategies. Finally, a one-way MANOVA was used to test any differences in perceived Person-Organization fit and Person-Workgroup fit among acculturation strategies. Results showed the emergence of five acculturation strategies (separation, assimilation, heritage-culture biculturalism, partial biculturalism, and full biculturalism). Regarding the effects of cultural identity salience on acculturation strategies, results indicate that higher levels of cultural identity salience was associated with a higher probability to integrate, but not separate, as compared to assimilation. Moreover, perceived workplace discrimination did not seem to act as a moderator in the influence of cultural identity salience on acculturation strategies. Last, results also showed Mexican immigrants adopting an integration or assimilation strategy had higher levels of perceived Person-Organization fit and Person-Workgroup fit than Mexican immigrants adopting a separation or marginalization strategy, respectively.

Book excerpt: Based on the correlational findings, Hypothesis 1 was partially supported, where Latinos'/as' perceived discrimination was significantly and positively correlated with symptoms of anxiety and depression, but not with self-esteem. In Hypotheses 2--5, four culturally protective factors were hypothesized as moderators (buffers) on the relations between perceived discrimination and psychological functioning. These four culturally protective factors were enculturation, ethnic identity, familismo, and acculturation. Based on the hierarchical regression findings, none of the identified protective factors were found as moderators on the relations between perceived discrimination and psychological functioning. The study strengths and limitations as well as practical implications and future research are discussed.

Book excerpt: Due to the concern of underutilization of counseling services by Mexican Americans, several factors which have been identified in the research (acculturation, stress, and discrimination) were examined in relation to counseling attitudes. Ninety- seven Mexican American university students, who fit the criteria of Mexican American based on self identification participated in the study. All students were administered five measures which included the Acculturation Rating Scale for Mexican Americans, a cultural commitment scale, the Hispanic Stress Inventory, the Perceptions of Discrimination Scale, and the Attitudes Toward Seeking Professional Psychological Help Scale. The purpose of the study was to explore the roles of acculturation, discrimination, and acculturative stress in relation to attitudes toward counseling for Mexican American college students and to further contribute to our understanding and knowledge of racism and its impact on ethnic minorities in counseling. Subjects were divided into high and low groups on measures of acculturation, acculturative stress, and perceptions of discrimination which was based on scores above and below the medians of instruments assessing these variables. Those who indicated experiencing higher levels of acculturative stress and perceptions of discrimination had overall more favorable attitudes toward seeking counseling than did those experiencing lower levels of acculturative stress and perceptions of discrimination. Women consistently had more favorable attitudes toward counseling than men based on the Need and Confidence subscales of the ATSPPH. The results of the Multiple Regression Analysis showed that discriminatory behaviors and attributes were significant predictors of overall Attitudes toward seeking psychological help. No significant differences were found between levels of acculturation and attitudes toward seeking counseling or between levels of cultural commitment and attitudes toward seeking counseling.

Specifically, this review focuses on the prevalence rates of anxiety and depression, as well as the role of sociocultural and demographic variables in the prevalence of symptomatology for this population. A critical review of the studies' methodologies and conclusions is presented in order to provide valuable information for health practitioners, public policy makers, and researchers alike who work with this population. Overall, approximately 25% to 33% of all Mexican migrant farmworkers are likely struggling with mental health concerns. Specifically, workers in the Midwest and East Coast endorsed significantly high levels of depression and anxiety symptomatology. The lifetime prevalence rates of depression and anxiety amongst this population were lower than those of non-farmworker Mexican immigrants. Rates of depression and anxiety were increased by specific variables related to social support/social isolation, religion and religiosity, acculturation and acculturative stress, psychological ambivalence and perceived control about being a migrant farmworker, and living and working conditions. Mexican migrant farmworkers are a population in need. Attention to variables associated with migrant farmworkers' living and working conditions can have a positive effect in reducing symptoms. This review highlights the needs of this community and signals a call to action for individuals who provide services to Mexican migrant farmworkers living in the United States.
