Book excerpt: This study analyse and determine the effects of bank credit access on the Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) productivity and profitability performance in Ethiopia. It is an explanatory study in which samples of 1,542 out of the population of 2,682 SMEs are drawn from the Ethiopian Manufacturing Enterprise survey data for the years 2005-2012. The study follows Slow’s growth theory (1957) for specifying the relationship between inputs, efficiency and outputs using ‘Cobb-Douglass production function’. In addition a linear, dynamic mathematical model is used to estimate SMEs profitability. The study applies inferential statistical techniques such as ‘Ordinary Least Square’ (OLS) for measuring the significance level and multivariate analysis to test the hypothesis of association.

Book excerpt: In this book the authors have designed comprehensive empirical studies and identified the impacts of access to finance on the Small and Micro Enterprises (SMEs) performance. The authors applied a mix of different methodologies ranging from developing a conceptual framework to an empirical study to investigate how, and to what extent, access to finance influences Small and Micro Enterprises (SMEs) performance. The motivation for the study was that the link between SMEs performance and use of bank credit is inconclusive. The study helps to understand the developed world financial theory and developing countries actual situation; thus, it helps to bridge the gap between theory and practices and strategically inform business decisions.

Book excerpt: The productivity of enterprises in low income countries like Ethiopia is insignificant and very low. This low productivity feature is even more common among Small and Medium Enterprises. This paper present the effects of access to bank credit on productivity of small and medium enterprises. The study makes use of the 2008/9 large and medium enterprises manufacturing survey data collected by the Central Statistical Authority (CSA) of Ethiopia and 2011 enterprises survey collected by World Bank respectively. The study is designed as a combination of descriptive and analytic research. Descriptive part of the study mainly rely on 2011 enterprises survey from World Bank while the analytic part is derived from 2008/9 Large and Medium Manufacturing Survey data in which a sample of 1294 enterprises are drawn from a list of over 2172 SMEs. The study identified the type and size of enterprises that is more likely responsive for access to bank credit and examined the link between SMEs productivity and use of bank credit. Above all, this paper opens the door for future research in this area.

Book excerpt: Master's Thesis from the year 2019 in the subject Business economics - Investment and Finance, grade: 3.28, , language: English, abstract: The purpose of the study is investigating the determinants of capital structure for Small Scale Manufacturing Firms (SSMFs) in Ethiopia. Hypotheses utilizing trade-off, pecking order and agency theories are empirically examined using a series of firm characteristics: size, tangibility, profitability, earning volatility, age and macroeconomic variable (GDP growth rate, inflation rate and interest rate). A structured record review was made to collect a panel data, which include 20 SSMFs year observations of 11 years over the period 1998 – 2008 E.C. The findings suggest that profitability, earning volatility, age, growth, GDP, inflation rate and interest rate variables are the most important determinants of capital structure of SSMFs in Ethiopia. The findings also reveal that the dominant capital structure theories (trade-off, pecking order, and agency theories) appear indeed to be valid for Ethiopian SSMFs’ capital structure; in fact, trade-off theory best explains Ethiopian SSMFs’ capital structure. All firm specific variables except Size, tangibility and growth variables seem to have an effect on the level of leverage in Ethiopian SSMFs.

Book excerpt: Recent growth accelerations in Africa are characterized by increasing productivity in agriculture, a declining share of the labor force employed in agriculture and declining productivity in modern sectors such as manufacturing. To shed light on this puzzle, we disaggregate firms in the manufacturing sector by size using two newly created panels of manufacturing firms, one for Tanzania covering 2008-2016 and one for Ethiopia covering 1996-2017. Our analysis reveals a dichotomy between larger firms that exhibit superior productivity performance but do not expand employment much, and small firms that absorb employment but do not experience any productivity growth. We suggest the poor employment performance of large firms is related to use of capital-intensive techniques associated with global trends in technology.

Book excerpt: Master's Thesis from the year 2017 in the subject Business economics - Supply, Production, Logistics, , language: English, abstract: Ethiopia’s industrial activity has been characterized by meager growth for the last epochs. But recently the Ethiopian government endorsed Growth and Transformation Plan (GTP) which gives prime attention to selected industries. This study examines the likely effect of productivity expansion of labor intensive industrial activities on the macro economy, government priority industries, factor and household income and welfare of households. The sectors were selected from the Ethiopian 2009/10 SAM based on their production characteristics. The selected labor intensive sectors include dairy, grain milling, milling service, sugar refining, other food process, beverage, textile, leather product and wood products. In order to investigate the impact of a 10% increase in the technical coefficients of these labor intensive industrial activities, the study used the static stage computable general equilibrium (CGE) model. The recently updated 2009/10 Ethiopian SAM was used to calibrate important parameters of the CGE models. The 2009/10 Ethiopian SAM revealed that 45.22% and 52.13% of rural and urban households generate their income from labor. The production expansion via an increase in their technical coefficient of the sectors derived significant change on macro variables such as real GDP, government consumption demand, investment demand, household consumption, export and import of goods and services. The GDP of the economy has been increased by 3.41%. The findings also suggest that production and export increase in government prioritized industrial products largely .For instance, the production of the textile and leather sectors increased by 26.08% and 41.03%,respectively.Increasing the production of labor intensive industrial activities showed significant decline of import of priority industrial goods. It also resulted in welfare gain to all rural and urban households. The study further extends its recommendation for Ethiopia to develop a strong industrial policy aimed towards promoting labor intensive industrial activities.

Small and medium-sized enterprise (SME) financial inclusion, in particular, is at the core of the economic diversification and growth challenges many countries are facing. In the Middle East and Central Asia (MENAP and CCA) regions, SMEs represent an important share of firms, but the regions lag most others in terms of SME access to financing.

Book excerpt: This dissertation investigates the productivity, employment, and resource reallocation effects of unilateral trade liberalization policy in Ethiopia's manufacturing industry. The research uses data from a census of medium and large manufacturing firms from 2000 to 2009. It estimates the gains in average firm-level productivity due to reduced tariffs on imported goods and raw material inputs. The results show that a 10 percentage point reduction in output tariff increases the productivity of exporting firms by 6 percent compared to domestic oriented firms. A similar fall in intermediate input tariff results in 21 percent increase in productivity for the average firm, three times higher than the improvement obtained from reducing output tariffs. The result also shows that tariff reduction benefits firms that are at the higher end of the productivity distribution compared to low productive firms. This study shows that firms' decision to exit the industry is not directly affected by cheap import competition due to reduced output tariffs but indirectly through the effect tariffs on productivity. A dynamic Olley-Pakes productivity decomposition indicates that market share reallocation from low to high productive firms contributes for 73 percent of the improvement in aggregate industry productivity followed by within firm improvement in productivity, and exit of low productive firms. This research shows that tariff reduction significantly affects industry market share reallocation. The result from the employment effects of trade liberalization indicate that reduced tariff causes a decline on firm- level demand for the average firm even after controlling for the effect of access to cheaper and variety inputs. A 1 percentage point decline in output tariff results in a 1.5 percent reduction in labor demand for the average firm. Exporting and high productive firms that gained further increase in productivity after tariff reduction did not expand their labor demand as expected.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Economic and social progress requires a diverse ecosystem of firms that play complementary roles. Making It Big: Why Developing Countries Need More Large Firms constitutes one of the most up-to-date assessments of how large firms are created in low- and middle-income countries and their role in development. It argues that large firms advance a range of development objectives in ways that other firms do not: large firms are more likely to innovate, export, and offer training and are more likely to adopt international standards of quality, among other contributions. Their particularities are closely associated with productivity advantages and translate into improved outcomes not only for their owners but also for their workers and for smaller enterprises in their value chains. The challenge for economic development, however, is that production does not reach economic scale in low- and middle-income countries. Why are large firms scarcer in developing countries? Drawing on a rare set of data from public and private sources, as well as proprietary data from the International Finance Corporation and case studies, this book shows that large firms are often born large—or with the attributes of largeness. In other words, what is distinct about them is often in place from day one of their operations. To fill the “missing top†? of the firm-size distribution with additional large firms, governments should support the creation of such firms by opening markets to greater competition. In low-income countries, this objective can be achieved through simple policy reorientation, such as breaking oligopolies, removing unnecessary restrictions to international trade and investment, and establishing strong rules to prevent the abuse of market power. Governments should also strive to ensure that private actors have the skills, technology, intelligence, infrastructure, and finance they need to create large ventures. Additionally, they should actively work to spread the benefits from production at scale across the largest possible number of market participants. This book seeks to bring frontier thinking and evidence on the role and origins of large firms to a wide range of readers, including academics, development practitioners and policy makers.

Book excerpt: This study starts with a brief analysis of which firms are the main net job creators in Ethiopia and then focuses on the financing constraints of Ethiopian Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) as one of the key obstacles to job creation and growth. The study uses two demand-side and an ad-hoc supply side survey administered to 16 financial institutions. This survey allowed collecting data on the actual involvement of financial institutions with MSMEs, their perception of potential public policy approaches to enhance MSME access to finance and the adequateness of their current business models. The combination of both demand-side and supply-side analysis allows to gain a full picture of MSME finance practices in Ethiopia by connecting information on firm experiences with the reporting of financial institutions on their business practices. While there was already anecdotal evidence that small firms were lacking proper access to finance in Ethiopia, the value added of this study is to provide accurate empirical evidence of the existence of a missing middle phenomenon.
