Book excerpt: The principle factors of concern in space environmental (in so far as effects on materialsARE CONCERNED) are believed to be: (1) extremely high (approaching absolute) vacuum, (2) exposure to high and low temperatures, (3) actinic solar radiation, (4) other forms of high energy radiation such as cosmic radiation undiminished by atmospheric penetration, a d (5) particle bombardment from tiny meteorites. Initial studies on elastomers (for sealing members in these systems) were made in a temperature range up to 800 F while exposed to pressures in the range from 10 to the -5th to 10 to the -6th power mm of Hg. One of the most striking conclusions to be made is the stability of organic materials when subjected to these low pressures. Only very small losses of material were observed and these were almost completely due to known volatile constituents. (Author).

Book excerpt: An experimental investigation was conducted on four different transparent elastomers (silicone, urethane, ethylene-proplylene, and isoprene rubbers) which are candidate matrix materials for flexible windows on spacecraft. The material mechanical properties were measured over a temperature range of from -100 deg C to +100 deg C and after exposure to vacuum, vacuum-heat, and air-heat environments for a period of 30 days. Light transmission through these materials for wavelengths from 230 to 2500 nm was also determined after exposure to environmental conditions. In addition to mechanical and optical properties, measurements were made on specimens to determine vacuum weight loss, gas permeability, the degrading effects of ultraviolet-vacuum exposure, and thermal degradation characteristics.

In many cases the selection of a spacecraft material is based on the performance--as determined from measurements of key engineering properties--of the material in simulated space environments. In developing criteria for the selection of spacecraft materials, much emphasis is placed on in situ testing, as well as on direct engineering property measurements, rather than inferring engineering property changes from such peripheral measurements as weight loss. Due to the large number of materials and the many anticipated mission environments that must be considered to design a spacecraft, in situ testing of spacecraft materials is fast becoming an enormous task. To better meet this task, there is a need to develop a better understanding of the nature of material-environment interactions as well as to develop test techniques which can be used in predicting environmental effects on materials."--Page 1.
