This task has been challenging to say the least and has been made worse in the wake of the COVID19 global pandemic. Using arts in general and music specifically has been shown in some spaces to aid in the development of academic skills. This study investigates the impact of music on phonemic awareness skills in kindergarten students. The treatment included rhythm and singing activities in conjunction with an evidence-based research intervention. Results were mixed, with the control group making overall better gains on literacy screener subtests. However, the treatment group experienced nearly twice the number of absences as a group, which may have also contributed to their less aggressive growth. Implications include the need to solidify the role of the arts within the school context.

The students showed significant growth in segmenting, rhyming, and syllable segmentation as a result of the intervention. Music instruction was concluded to be an effective tool for delivery of phonological awareness instruction due to the relationship between music processing and language processing.

This study used a pretest/post test design during the fall of the 2009-2010 school year. The treatment in this study was given to the entire kindergarten class. Data were collected on the students who scored the lowest on a pretest on the skills of blending and isolating sounds, and hear rhymes in words. The selected students were given a posttest at the end of the study to see how much growth was made. The students' phonetic writing skills were also monitored. The students participated in daily lessons on phonemic awareness skills through music using song books and CD's. Assessments were done on a regular basis throughout the study. The data results showed significant growth in the phonemic awareness skills of blending and isolating sounds. The results also showed consistent growth in hearing rhymes in words and the skill of writing phonetically. My hypothesis was supported in this study.

The Dr. Seuss Nonsense Word Test: An Assessment Sequence for Emergent to Beginning/Early Readers (Appendix A) was used for pre and post assessment. The intervention plan and procedures were connected to current research. The plan included explicit instruction in phonemic awareness skills such as decoding, rhyming, and segmenting/blending, within short /a/ and short /o/ vowel patterns. The students received approximately 60 minutes per week of intervention over a six week period. Analysis of pretest and posttest data showed improvement in the area of decoding within phonics.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to examine the short-term effects of a music education intervention on the receptive language skills of students in an at-risk early childhood program. The target population was nine students ages 3, 4, and 5 in an at-risk, inclusive classroom in a Chicago public school. The problem of language delay is indicated in the targeted students' preliminary evaluative data of receptive language skills as measured using the Peabody Picture Vocabulary Test (PPVT-III) and Teacher Rating of Oral Language and Literacy (TROLL) assessments. As a result of teaching music skills as recommended in ISBE and MENC learning standards, during the period from October 2006 to December 2006, the targeted early childhood students improved their receptive language skills. Results indicate that after 2 months of intervention the average student age equivalent increased 21.18% in receptive language and 34.67% in phonemic awareness. Unexpected outcomes included transfer of knowledge to the classroom and home environments, increases in musical identity and self-esteem, and continued practice of music activities in the classroom following the intervention. Educators may implement such music activities to increase receptive language skills in an at-risk preschool population. (Contains 7 tables and 2 figures.)
