Book excerpt: This project performed the task of observing and recording the results of the SRA Corrective Reading Program implemented at Cousins Middle School during 2000-2001. The researcher was a faculty member of Cousins Middle School during the time period studied. The primary research questions examined and reported the results of the implemented program concerning the following areas: Student reading achievement on norm-referenced standardized test and whether or not the instituted program aided students in becoming better readers. Students at Cousins Middle School who scored below the 40th percentile on the 1999 Iowa Test of Basic Skills participated in the SRA program. Students who participated in the classes received one period of daily instruction. Qualifying Title I students earned academic credits for the reading intervention. Conducting a literature review provided sufficient background knowledge the researcher. Because of the completion of the literature review, direction for the research was substantiated. A methodological process occurred to provide a template for the study. Project design, data collection, analytical methods, and limitations of the study were reported as part of the methodology. The findings reported the students' performance on the Stanford-9 reading test. The specific areas reported: reading vocabulary, reading comprehension, reading total, and core scores were discussed. Student, teacher, and administration satisfaction with the SRA reading program was revealed. Because of the research, recommendations and implications of the research were provided.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of corrective reading on high school special education students. The study was conducted over a nine-week period during the fall trimester of the 2011-2012 school year. Three students were chosen from the freshman special education reading class; the group consisted of three male subjects. The Corrective Reading Decoding Placement Test was used as the pretest/posttest assessment to measure reading scores/levels. Subjects received Corrective Reading every day for 60 minutes during the study. At the end of each class period, subjects recorded their scores for that lesson in their personal management journals. Teacher anecdotal notes were kept to record observations and document subject progress during the study. Results from the Corrective Reading Decoding Placement Test posttest indicated an improvement in reading scores/levels. Further research is needed to determine if the conclusions of this study would be applicable to a generalized population.

Book excerpt: The roughly one-quarter of U.S. eighth graders who score below basic on national assessments of reading are poorly equipped for the reading demands of secondary school. They struggle with summarizing and making text-based inferences (NCES, 2013). Intervention in middle school needs to be comprehensive, both because of the heterogeneity of the population of struggling readers and because of the interdependence of components of reading. This study presents preliminary results of a clinical trial of a new multi-component program, the Strategic Adolescent Reading Intervention (STARI). Four Massachusetts school districts served as research sites: two large urban districts, District A and B, and two rural/suburban districts, District C and D. Districts volunteered to be part of the study and solicited schools to participate (in the case of the larger districts) or had all their middle schools participate in the two smaller districts. In each of the participating schools, students scoring below proficient on the state ELA assessment were eligible to participate in STARI. Students in substantially separate special education classes, students who were level 1 or 2 English language learners, and students whose special education plan included intensive, rules-based phonics intervention, were excluded from study participation. Questions guiding the analysis were: (1) What is the intention-to-treat (ITT) estimate of STARI on the Reading Inventory and Scholastic Evaluation (RISE) for a sample of struggling readers in Grades 6 to 8?; and (2) What is the treatment-on-the treated (TOT) estimate of STARI on the RISE subtests? Evaluation results of STARI suggest that a multi-component Tier-2 intervention for struggling adolescent readers can improve a range of reading outcomes including students' ability to decode words, to read connected text with speed and accuracy, to improve their knowledge of word parts, and to improve sentence and text-level comprehension outcomes. By the middle grades, it may be critical to engage struggling readers with curriculum units that tap student interests and provide opportunities to talk about text with teachers and peers. Tables are appended.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects on reading achievement for middle school students after participation in a remedial reading program, Xtreme Reading, at a southeastern state public school. The researcher used Stufflebeam's (2003) context, input, process, and product (CIPP) model to guide the study. A mixed-method research design was used to examine data collected from 80 students in Grades 6 through 8 participating in reading interventions spanning a 1-year period from 2013 through 2014. -- There were significant differences in reading achievement scores of students during the 1-year implementation of Xtreme Reading. The findings in this study reveal that an intensive reading intervention, Xtreme Reading, can significantly improve reading achievement for struggling adolescent readers when implemented with fidelity. -- Analyses of the data also revealed statistical significance between the effects on student motivation to read during the 1-year implementation of the Xtreme Reading program. The findings in this study will be beneficial to secondary principals who are held accountable for literacy development, implementation, and evaluation as the school instructional leader. The findings in this study will also be beneficial to directors of curriculum and instruction as well as district superintendents in how recommendations are made to school boards for changes in policies of implementation and monitoring of effective reading intervention programs for students at the secondary level.
