Book excerpt: An increasing number of publications from a variety of human service fields have sought to utilize mindfulness meditation as a means to reduce psychological distress and increase positive psychological outlooks. These studies typically involve mindfulness training and typically last anywhere from 4 hours to 8 weeks. To date, no published research has established the minimal amount of time for effective outcomes to benefit from mindfulness exposure. The purpose of this study is to evaluate whether brief exposure to mindfulness training before a discrete event can lead to positive outcomes in that event and increased mindfulness in a group of university students. A group of 26 undergraduate and graduate students in two different classes were exposed to either a control task (listening to music) or a mindfulness intervention just prior to taking a quiz. The session lasted no more than 30 minutes and the mindfulness intervention itself was timed to not exceed 15 minutes. Visual inspection of the data yielded some positive outcomes in terms of increased performing on a quiz in comparison to quiz grades the week before. Statistical analysis suggested that these outcomes were not statistically significant. This study adds to the research on mindfulness as an intervention for positive outcomes. Implications for future research on practical benefits of mindfulness were discussed.

Book excerpt: The majority of college students will experience a traumatic event either before or during college, and a significant subset of those students experience PTSD symptoms. Additionally, many college students engage in problematic alcohol use. There is evidence that individuals with co-occurring PTSD symptoms and alcohol and other substance use disorders often use substances in an attempt to reduce their PTSD symptoms, and college students with PTSD symptoms experience more negative alcohol and drug consequences than those without PTSD. The relationship between PTSD and alcohol and other substance use disorders is often cyclical: individuals use substances to cope with PTSD symptoms, which in turn exacerbate symptoms and make them vulnerable to further traumatic experiences. Mindfulness interventions have been successfully utilized for individuals with PTSD or substance use disorders. However, to date, no previous studies have evaluated treatments for college students with co-occurring PTSD symptoms and problem drinking. This study evaluated the feasibility, acceptability, and efficacy of a 4-week group loving-kindness meditation (LKM) compared to referral to treatment as usual (RTAU) for college students with PTSD symptoms and problem drinking. Seventy-six college students participated in the current study. Overall, the LKM group was feasible and acceptable to college students, although recruitment of eligible students into the study was lower than expected and attendance at LKM groups was modest. Participants’ PTSD symptoms, drinking quantity, and negative drinking consequences decreased over the course of the study, although there was no significant differences between the LKM and RTAU conditions on these outcomes. Additionally, higher coping drinking motives predicted greater PTSD symptoms and more drinking consequences, highlighting the need for early effective intervention for individuals who drink to cope with their PTSD symptoms.

Book excerpt: Aggression and violence are severe and prevalent problems associated with numerous negative health consequences and increased health care costs. Prevalence rates vary with the highest rates being among young adult populations. Some research indicates that aggression perpetration is an attempt at controlling negative affect. Therefore, many have posited that emotion regulation may be an amenable risk factor for violence and aggression, and interventions such as mindfulness-based therapies designed to enhance emotion regulation and distress tolerance may be helpful. Previous research has found positive effects on psychological well-being using even brief mindfulness interventions. Thus, the current study aimed to investigate how a brief mindfulness intervention affects aggressive responding among 97 college students. Participants completed measures of general aggression and mindfulness. Participants were randomly assigned to receive a brief mindfulness intervention (or no intervention), followed by completion of a 25-minute lab-based aggression exercise in which participants ostensibly competed against an opponent to earn money via button-pressing. Participants then completed a measure of state mindfulness as a manipulation check. Hypotheses that participants in the mindfulness intervention group would respond less aggressively than those in the control group even after controlling for trait mindfulness and previous aggression were not supported. Results indicated that groups did not differ on state mindfulness or aggression. Future research should improve upon the current study by addressing methodological concerns with the mindfulness task in order to better understand the relationship between mindfulness and aggression.

Book excerpt: The present study examined the effects of a brief video-led mindfulness exercise on momentary choice impulsivity as measured by a monetary delay discounting survey. Participants in the experimental group watched a video requiring them to engage in a brief breathing exercise while participants in the control group viewed a video unrelated to the topics at hand. Switch point analyses suggested that the experimental group discounted less steeply following the intervention while the discounting slope of the control group remained relatively unchanged. A t-test comparing the average change in AUC values from pre-test to post-test for both groups revealed a significant difference: t (13.17) = 2.94, p = 0.0114. The experimental group demonstrated greater changes in AUC scores from pretest to posttest (M= 0.1036 ± 0.0328) than the control group (-0.00031 ± 0.01317). Additionally, an F-test was conducted to compare variances between the individual score changes of the experimental group and the control group (p

Past research has demonstrated the hypothetical choices made in delay discounting correlate with actual money choices and predict impulsivity with drug use, gambling, and food choices. Though delayed discounting has been studied widely, it is unknown whether impulsivity is a characteristic trait or is influenced by contextual cues. Mindfulness has been demonstrated to improve psychological well-being in various contexts. The present study explored the effect of brief mindfulness exercises on impulsivity through a multiple baseline design across 5 participants. Results were mixed, with some participant’s AUCs increasing post-treatment and others remaining the same or decreasing. The current study raised some questions for future research regarding the contextual control of mindfulness and impulsivity.

The current investigation extended previous findings by examining the short-term effects of a brief mindfulness training in undergraduate psychology students. The non-concurrent multiple baseline design evaluated heart rate and cortisol changes in response to a brief mindfulness-based intervention. The results found for some individuals, participation in the mindfulness intervention helped regulate their emotions and heart rate, as evidenced by the decrease in heart rate and cortisol and increase in psychological flexibility by changes in Acceptance and Action Questionnaire-2 and Perceived Stress Scale-14 scores. Findings suggest more frequent, but brief interventions incorporating mindful attention can be an effective means for managing stress, but further research is warranted.

This is evident in time-consuming academic responsibilities overlapping with family life, work duties, and personal life. Stress can have negative impacts on academic performance and physical health in college students , and it has been correlated with various negative outcomes including anxiety and depression (Segrin,1999), increases in headaches (Labbe, Murphy & O'Brien, 1997), increased rates of athletic injury (Brewer & Petrie, 1996), suicidal ideation and hopelessness (Dixon, Rumford, Heppner, & Lipps, 1992), sleep disturbances (Verlander, Benedict, & Hanson, 1999), poor health behaviors (Sadava & Pak, 1993; Naquin & Gilbert, 1996), and the common cold (Stone, Bovbjerg, Neale, et al.). The focus of the current study was to investigate mindfulness as a way to help college students to cope with on-going stress specifically through its impact on increasing hope related to coping with a current life stressor. Mindfulness is an openness to perceiving one's present environment in a non- judgmental way with openness and flexibility (Compton & Hoffman, 2013; Bergen-Cico, Possemato, & Cheon, 2013). It allows one to be more fully aware of present moment situations, open to new outlooks and points of view, and it facilitates more knowledge and pathways to goal attainment (Compton & Hoffman, 2013). For the current study, it was hypothesized that a brief mindfulness meditation intervention would increase coping-related hopefulness in a group of college students compared to a mind-wandering intervention. Forty-two undergraduate college students from the University of Southern Mississippi completed measures of stress and hope and identified a current stressor in their life to focus on when responding to the hope scale. The mean differences in hope change across the mindfulness and mind-wandering groups were computed, and the results indicated the average hope increase for the mindfulness meditation group was not statistically significant from the average hope increase for the mind-wandering group. The participants were further divided into a high stress group (above the mean) and a low stress group (below the mean). Within the low stress group, the average hope increase for the mindfulness group was 2.08 (SD=4.01), and the average hope increase for the mind-wandering group was 2.0 (SD=3.42). Within the high stress group, the average hope increase for the mindfulness group was 3.7 (SD=3.37), and the average hope increase for the mind-wandering group was 2.4 (SD=3.63). The t-test indicated that the results were not statistically significant. However, the high stress group showed a greater increase in hope in the mindfulness group. Although not statistically significant, the results suggest a possible trend for increases in positive cognitions related to coping with stress in the mindfulness meditation group relative to the mind-wandering group, for the participants reporting higher than average numbers of life stressors. Future research should consider testing the same procedure with a larger sample of high-stress individuals in order to increase statistical power. --Page [iv].

Book excerpt: Clear and compact guidance on integrating mindfulness into practice This clear and concise book provides practical, evidence-based guidance on the use of mindfulness in treatment: its mechanism of action, the disorders for which there is empirical evidence of efficacy, mindfulness practices and techniques, and how to integrate them into clinical practice. Leading experts describe the concepts and roots of mindfulness, and examine the science that has led to this extraordinarily rich and ancient practice becoming a foundation to many contemporary, evidenced-based approaches in psychotherapy. The efficacy of mindfulness-based interventions in conditions as diverse as borderline personality disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, depression, alcohol and substance use, emotional dysregulation, attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder, chronic stress, eating disorders, and other medical conditions including type 2 diabetes and rheumatoid arthritis is also described. The book is invaluable reading for all those curious about the current science around mindfulness and about how and when to incorporate it effectively into clinical practice.
