Book excerpt: This work presents an interpretation of Piaget's formulation of the concrete-operational to formal-operational level of the cognitive functioning continuum by using material from elementary mathematics. The proposal is made that concrete- operational level reasoning can be distinguished from formal operational by its dependence on empirical cues, the movement up the continuum being marked by a lessening dependence upon empirical support. Reality for a child in this context is seen as being bound up with the notion of closure or uniqueness which in its turn is related to both the kind of elements operated upon, and the number and type of operations involved.
