Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of time of storage and thermocycling on the shear bond strength of three chemically different dentin adhesives: Mirage Bond Dentin and Enamel Adhesive (MB) with Mirage Dual Cure composite; Scotchbond 2 (S2) with P-50 composite, and Scotchbond Dual Cure (SB) with P-30 composite. All adhesives were applied according to the manufacturer's instructions. One hundred and twenty human molar teeth were treated, within 24 hours after extraction. A flat dentin surface was created with a slow speed diamond was perpendicular to the long axis of the tooth. The one hundred and twenty treated samples were divided in two equal groups. One group was stored for 60-72 hours (60-72H) and the other group was stored for one month (1M). Within each group, half of the samples were thermocycled (Th) for 200 cycles (30 seconds dwell) at 5°C and 55°C and the other half was not thermocycled (N Th). The shear bond strength (SBS) was tested on an Instron Universal Testing Machine. The means and standard deviations were determined for each group and a three factor analysis of variance was applied to the data. Statistically significant differences were found for the main effects among dentin adhesives and for thermocycling (p d"0.05). No significant difference was found for the main effect of time of storage (p d"0.05). The interaction effects between the time of storage and thermocycling as well as among dentin adhesives, time of storage and thermocycling, were not significantly different (p> 0.05). The interaction effects of dentin adhesives by thermocycling and dentin adhesives by time of storage were found to be significantly different (p d"0.05). Newman Keul's pairwise comparisons indicated that each adhesive was significantly different in shear bond strength from the others (p d"0.05). Thermocycling significantly lowered the bond strength of SB and S2 (p d"0.05). MB was not affected by thermocycling (p d"0.05). Time of storage did not affect the mean SBS for SB and S2. MB had a statistically significant greater mean SBS after 1 M of storage (p d"0.05). The samples were categorized according to the type of fracture pattern with light microscopy at 40X, and representative types of each group were analyzed on the scanning electron microscope. The fracturer patterns were all at the dentin-adhesive interface for SB. For S2, 5 out of 40 were cohesive in the adhesive. The other 35 were at the dentin-adhesive interface. For MB, 26 fractures were at the dentin-adhesive interface, 7 were cohesive in the adhesive, 4 were at the adhesive-composite interface, 2 were cohesive in the composite and 1 cohesive in the dentin. The fracture patterns from representative samples from each group were photographes on the scanning electron microscope.

Current literature on the effects of thermocycling on bond strength is equivocal. This is largely due to a lack of a universally accepted standardized technique to examine the effects of thermocycling on orthodontic bond strength. As a result, differences in testing methodology between laboratories and investigators within the same laboratory make it difficult to directly compare data from thermocycling studies. The aims of this study were (1) to show that the testing method developed at the University of Toronto is independent of the investigator; (2) to determine the effect of thermocycling on the shear bond strength of orthodontic brackets bonded to bovine enamel; (3) to determine the effect of long term storage on the mean shear bond strength of orthodontic brackets bonded to bovine enamel; (4) to examine the bond failure interface in order to determine if a relationship exists between thermocycling and the location of the cement after debonding; (5) to examine the bond failure interface in order to determine if a relationship exists between long term storage and the location of the cement after debonding. Book excerpt: Purpose of the study: Describe the effect of thermocycling on the adhesive strength of three long-term resilient liners to denture base polymers used for the formative, additive and subtractive manufacture of complete dentures. Methods: A total of ninety samples were fabricated, thirty per each group of denture base material(Lucitone 199, Ivo Base CAD, Denture Base LP). For each denture base polymer, ten samples were relined with one of three resilient liners (Permasoft, Mucopren Soft, Molloplast-B). The first five samples of each group were subjected to thermocycling and the last five samples were stored in distilled water. Subsequently, the adhesive strength of the samples was assessed via tensile testing. The resulting data was analyzed using a three-way ANOVA. Results: After thermocycling, Mucopren Soft displayed the best adhesive strength to Lucitone 199 (1.78±0.32 MPa), followed by Molloplast-B (1.26±0.21 MPa) and Permasoft (0.65±0.06 MPa). For Ivo Base CAD, Molloplast-B exhibited the best adhesive strength (1.70±0.36 MPa), followed by Mucopren Soft (1.11±0.15 MPa) and Permasoft (0.53±0.04 MPa). When used with Denture Base LP, Molloplast-B displayed the best adhesive strength (1.37±0.08 MPa), followed by Mucopren Soft (0.67±0.19 MPa) and Permasoft (0.31±0.03 MPa). The adhesive strength of Molloplast-B and Mucopren Soft to Lucitone 199 were not statistically different from each other in the water storage groups, and were 1.42±0.18, and 1.66±0.40 MPa respectively. In this group, the adhesive strength of Permasoft (0.58±0.02 MPa) was statistically different from Molloplast-B and Mucopren Soft. The liner with the best adhesive strength to IvoBase CAD was Molloplast-B (1.83±0.25 MPa), followed by Mucopren Soft (1.26±0.19 MPa) and Permasoft (0.58±0.08 MPa). Molloplast-B displayed the best adhesion to Denture Base LP (1.76±0.23 MPa), followed by Mucopren Soft (0.88±0.14 MPa), and Permasoft (0.25±0.06 MPa).In this experiment, only Molloplast-B was affected significantly by thermocycling (P
