The purpose of this study was to determine which factors were most influential to students when they considered whether or not to participate in high school band. Eighty-six students currently enrolled in high school band and eleven students who completed middle school band program but did not continue band in high school were surveyed to determine which factors most influenced their decisions. T- Tests were used to compare means. Results indicated that students who participated in optional band activities in middle school were not more likely to continue band in high school. Students who continued in band did so because they wanted to continue playing their instruments. Students who discontinued band in high school identified conflicts with sports, class schedules, and loss of interest as reasons not to pursue band in high school.

Book excerpt: Students have a basic psychological need for a sense of belonging in school in order to positively engage with their academic environment. Culturally proficient school leaders take responsibility for creating an environment which serves all students. A rich menu of school activities represents systems of developing sense of belonging for engagement by which students have greater chances of success and positive outcomes. The purpose of this research was to explore how music ensemble enrollment influences students' sense of belonging in school. The researcher conducted a qualitative case study on one high school band program in a predominantly white, higher-socioeconomic status, suburban school, collecting 175 in vivo codes from extant student writing samples. This study suggests a theoretical framework of a cycle of musical-social group cohesion through which sense of belonging was built through both social and musical means. The framework suggests that the social bond was facilitated through both social experiences and the prosocial effect of group synchronous music making itself. It is suggested that student sense of belonging may be built in a unique way through music ensemble experience in the school setting, and that school leaders should consider a vibrant music program not as peripheral, but as essential to the psychological development of their students. This study was limited to a single case, so further research is needed to compare the effects of various programs and confirm the presence of this effect in different school environments.

With this knowledge I argue that band directors can select repertoire that both challenges and engages students while still being enjoyable to perform. Despite the existence of studies that consider the many factors that affect music preference, no study has focused exclusively on band music, which remains a vital part of music education in the United States. Students from three high schools rated ten 30-second examples of concert music on a Likert-type scale. I placed these musical examples into five self-defined categories: Harmoniemusik wind pieces, post-tonal wind pieces, publisher-influenced band pieces, contemporary band pieces from within the past fifty years, and British band classics. The results suggest that participation in band has varying influences on music preference. Preference scores for three categories dropped through participation in high school band, while preference scores for two categories rose. Familiarity seems to be the single biggest contributing factor that influences music preference, and future research needs to be conducted in that area.

Book excerpt: Student access to arts education and the quality of such instruction in the nation's public schools continue to be of concern to policymakers, educators, and families. Specifically, research has focused on questions such as: To what extent do students receive instruction in the arts? Under what conditions is this instruction provided? What is the profile of arts education instructors? (Ruppert and Nelson 2006). This study is the third of its kind to be conducted by the National Center for Education Statistics (nces) in the Institute of Education Sciences (ies), U.S. Department of Education, to provide national data that inform these issues. The first study was conducted in the 1994-95 school year to provide baseline data on public schools' approaches to arts education. The second study was conducted during the 1999-2000 school year to provide broader coverage of arts education issues by collecting the first national data on educational backgrounds, professional development activities, teaching loads, and instructional practices of elementary school teachers--self-contained classroom teachers, music specialists, and visual arts specialists. To update the information from a decade ago, Congress requested that the U.S. Department of Education's Office of Innovation and Improvement (oii) and nces conduct a new study that would borrow from and build on the previous studies. This study examines many of the issues from the previous studies, including the extent to which students received instruction in the arts; the facilities and resources available for arts education instruction; and the preparation, work environments, and instructional practices of music and visual arts specialists and non-arts classroom teachers. This study also addresses emerging issues such as the availability of curriculum-based arts education activities outside of regular school hours and the presence of school-community partnerships in the arts. In addition, the current study provides broader coverage of arts education instructors by including two new surveys for secondary music and visual arts specialists. Selected indicators on arts education in public elementary and secondary schools are organized into four sections, one for each arts education subject area--music, visual arts, dance, and drama/theatre. Using its Fast Response Survey System (frss), nces conducted the surveys during the 2009-10 school year, with the two school surveys and the collection of sampling lists for the teacher surveys starting in fall 2009. frss is a survey system designed to collect small amounts of issue-oriented data from a nationally representative sample of districts, schools, or teachers with minimal burden on respondents and within a relatively short period of time. The findings in this report have been chosen to demonstrate the range of information available from the frss study rather than to discuss all of the observed differences; they are not meant to emphasize any particular issue. The findings are based on self-reported data from public school principals and teachers. Where relevant, national findings are broken out by the poverty concentration at the school, measured as the percent of students eligible for free or reduced-price lunch. This study includes results of student surveys of current high-school students who took band during their middle school years, seeking essential factors affecting student perceptions about continuation into high school band programs. Research into band student enrollment and retention exist, yet limited resources focus on transitioning from middle to high school. Studies indicate that participation in large music ensembles, such as bands, provides social, emotional, and academic benefits. Increasing student retention across this transition could yield improved student experiences and achievement in music and beyond. Existing research combined with student survey results constitutes a qualitative thematic analyzing why students who have learned much about the basics of instrumental music in middle school band elect not to continue their studies in high school. Based on existing literature, peer-connectedness, parental support, and director rapport are likely indicators for continuation in the band. By improving band student retention rates, improvements in overall graduation rates may also be achieved.

Book excerpt: At the time of this writing, the impact of the recent COVID-19 pandemic on music education at the secondary level is yet unknown. This study aims to collect and review available data to determine if the COVID-19 pandemic may have had an effect on participation in high school band in Minnesota. This convergent parallel mixed methods research study examines statistical data available through the Freedom of Information Act from a sampling of 167 out of a possible 476 public high schools in Minnesota to determine a potential impact between the COVID-19 pandemic and enrollment in high school band. This is achieved by reviewing high school band enrollment trends from the past five years and comparing them to the difference in enrollment levels in the falls of 2019, 2020, and 2021. A survey was also sent to Minnesota band directors to assess their perspectives regarding the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on their band programs. The survey was distributed electronically, and seventy-seven Minnesota high school band directors completed the survey. The results of the study observed a decrease in high school band participation from the fall of 2019, before the COVID-19 pandemic, to the fall of 2021. The data show a decrease in enrollment in Minnesota high school band programs following the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. Band director feedback is consistent with these findings. This project serves as an early benchmark in understanding how the COVID-19 pandemic may have affected participation in band in Minnesota high schools, and as an early metric on which future research regarding band participation and the COVID-19 pandemic may be based.
