This study investigated the laboratory effect of temperature and impurities on surface tension of crude oil samples and water. The aforementioned tests were carried out (in line with industrial standard) on the samples in order to determine the relationship between surface tension, temperature and impurities and also to compare the variation in the measured property due to temperature and impurities. Prediction equations were also built. The results show that surface tension decreases with an increase in temperature in the crude oil samples, water and detergent, while there was an increment in the presence of salt and bentonite as the concentrations increase. We also observed that surface tension increases with water-in-oil emulsion. Also, we see a strong relationship between temperature, impurities and the measured property (surface tension) with an r2 value range of 0.7441 to 0.8638 in all the tests carried out. This study utilized graphic and statistical illustrations to highlight the effect of temperature and impurities on the investigated property and the corresponding effect in the oil industry. The collective and individual relationship between the independent and dependent variable was highlighted and variations were scientifically explained. The prediction equations serve as a quick guide to reservoir engineers to determine the variation in the measured property from other samples of crude oil and water.

Book excerpt: "A capillary pressure curves provides important information about the porous system such as porosity, breakthrough pressure, fluid-solid wettability and capillary hysteresis. The measurement of capillary pressure curves is one of the most commonly adopted methods of measuring wettability in a porous system. However, to date these measurements are done only at room temperature because of the limitations of utilising existing equipment at higher temperatures. The capillary behaviour of liquid in porous system can be a different when subjected to harsh condition such as high temperature and pressure. An experimental setup has been designed and developed to measure air-water capillary pressure curves for gas diffusion layers (GDLs) used in polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells at elevated temperatures. Experiments were conducted at various temperatures in the direction of increasing and decreasing temperatures for Toray 120 and Toray090 with varying PTFE loadings. Notable shifts in the capillary behavior were seen and in some cases the shifts were of the same size as PTFE addition. In untreated samples the results suggest that GDL wettability changes with temperature once the temperature dependence of the surface tension has been accounted for. In treated samples, however, the wettability remains more or less constant with temperature. This behavior is in agreement with the temperature dependent values of water contact angle on PTFE and graphite. Observed shift with temperature for treated samples are more or less reversible during decreasing temperatur" --

This book was released on 2012 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Capillary pressure and contact angle hysteresis in porous media are important yet not fully understood phenomena. A fundamental problem in interpretation of the capillary properties of porous media is the effect of the interaction of wetting properties and pore geometry on interface curvature. Contact angles provide a fundamental measure of wetting. However, circumstances under which reproducible and unambiguous values of contact angle are observed are limited to special circumstances. Contact angles commonly exhibit hysteresis between advancing and receding conditions. The origin of the contact angle hysteresis may be related to either chemical or geometric phenomena or a combination of both. Small scale geometric features, such as surface roughness, can have a dominant effect on the effective contact angles at the three phase lines of contact boundaries that are essential to the existence of interfaces and determine their curvature. Hysteresis in drainage and imbibition observed for spreading conditions, when the contact angle is zero and there is no hysteresis in contact angle, is accentuated by the pore geometry and the non-uniform structure of the pore space. In the first part of this thesis, the effect of roughness on the effective contact angle is studied by applying the MS-P (Mayer, Stowe, Princen) method of computing interface curvatures, for the first time, to geometric models of surface roughness that include small scale periodic variation and retained fluid in grooves along the walls of tubes of constant cross section. The theoretical results are shown to be consistent with experimental results on the wetting behavior of combinations of roughened polymeric tubes and pure liquids that give a range of well-defined intrinsic contact angles (contact angles measured at smooth polymeric surfaces or deposited monolayers for pure liquids, usually against air). Most of the investigation reported in this thesis concerns hysteresis in porous media when the contact is zero for advancing and receding conditions. There have been numerous efforts to model hysteresis under this relatively simplified condition. Most of the published hysteresis data is for bead packs. There is a paucity of detailed experimental capillary pressure data for consolidated porous materials, such as porous sandstone and carbonate rocks. In this work, an improved porous plate method was developed to obtain accurate and relatively fast measurement of two-phase capillary pressure-saturation relationships including hysteresis cycles and scanning curves. Extensive sets of capillary pressure data and corresponding equilibration outflow diagrams for various rock and fluid systems including air-brine, mineral oil-brine and crude oil-brine in sandstones are presented and discussed. In order to understand the effects of the pore structure and displacement mechanisms on capillary hysteresis and trapping, a geologically realistic pore network model representing the pore structure of Berea sandstone was adapted and systematically modified to investigate effects of various pore network characteristics. These include pore size distribution, pore-to-pore and pore-to-throat correlations and coordination number, on the shape of capillary pressure curves and the magnitude of capillary pressure hysteresis and non-wetting phase trapping. Using the knowledge from the analysis, the network was then tuned to reproduce capillary pressure hysteresis experimental data for Bentheim sandstone. In order to simultaneously match the hysteresis trends and the residual NWP saturation, a snap-off criterion was introduced to the model based on the theoretical length/diameter ratio at which a cylindrical liquid bubble becomes unstable. The non-wetting phase residual saturation was matched by adjustment of the throat lengths and without further adjustments, the scanning hysteresis cycles at various initial saturations were closely predicted by the model. It is also shown that the predicted distribution of residual nonwetting phase is in close agreement with the reported experimental data for sandstone obtained by 3D micro-CT imaging and other methods of obtaining blob size distribution. The capabilities of the network model are extended to compute fluid-fluid and solid-fluid surface areas as a function of saturation. Comparison of work of displacement from the modeled capillary pressure data with changes in free surface energy from the model are used, for the first time, to calculate the efficiency of conversion of work to surface area and vice versa.

In the recent years, extensive research on crude oil, brine, and rock systems has acknowledged that the composition of the injected water can change wetting properties of the reservoir during a water flood in a promising way to improve oil recovery. Hence, injection of "smart water" with correct salinity and composition is considered as a tertiary recovery method. The mechanism behind wettability alteration that is promoted by smart water injection has been a topic of discussion in carbonate and sandstone formations. In this work, some key properties of sea water and its dilutions with natural and spiked sulphate concentrations have been thoroughly investigated in the laboratory. Interfacial tension (IFT) of crude oil/brine system was monitored at ambient and high pressure-high temperature conditions. The brine with the least IFT was then used as a non-wetting phase with aged samples of rock for the measurement of contact angle at high pressure-high temperature conditions. The rock samples are carbonates of a selected onshore oil field in UAE. The results of this work show that sea water of salinity 57,539 mg/l without sulphate spiking may be considered as the smart water for further core flooding investigation.

Book excerpt: This open access book offers a timely guide to challenges and current practices to permanently plug and abandon hydrocarbon wells. With a focus on offshore North Sea, it analyzes the process of plug and abandonment of hydrocarbon wells through the establishment of permanent well barriers. It provides the reader with extensive knowledge on the type of barriers, their functioning and verification. It then discusses plug and abandonment methodologies, analyzing different types of permanent plugging materials. Last, it describes some tests for verifying the integrity and functionality of installed permanent barriers. The book offers a comprehensive reference guide to well plugging and abandonment (P&A) and well integrity testing. The book also presents new technologies that have been proposed to be used in plugging and abandoning of wells, which might be game-changing technologies, but they are still in laboratory or testing level. Given its scope, it addresses students and researchers in both academia and industry. It also provides information for engineers who work in petroleum industry and should be familiarized with P&A of hydrocarbon wells to reduce the time of P&A by considering it during well planning and construction.
