Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to examine the mediating role that math self-efficacy plays in the relationship between math anxiety and achievement among eighth grade students. Understanding the impact of self-efficacy on school motivation during adolescence is important because a decline in academic self-efficacy often begins during middle school. According to social cognitive theory, both math self-efficacy and math anxiety are variables that are associated with student performance. A correlational design was utilized in order to examine these relationships. Two self-reports were administered to the students in order to quantify levels of math anxiety and math self-efficacy. The students' most current grades in the subject of math were also incorporated into this study as the criterion variable. Results demonstrated that all three variables were significantly correlated and in the expected directions. Regression analyses revealed that although math anxiety was a significant predictor of achievement, math self-efficacy mediated the relationship between math anxiety and achievement. These results are consistent with those hypothesized by social cognitive theory. Despite the fact that mandated standardized testing is increasing in our schools, the primary implication of this study is that students' cognitions about their abilities in math are more important than their emotions or feelings about the subject of math. It is hoped that the results will help educators identify those students who may need additional assistance in order to become self-sufficient learners and confident in their abilities. Educators can also benefit by becoming aware of these other factors that can inhibit student learning.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study is to examine mathematics anxiety during the transition from elementary school to middle school and address whether providing honors math classes contributes to mathematics anxiety. In this quantitative study, the two research questions were: to what extent do honors math courses contribute to students’ mathematics anxiety who qualify for honors courses during the transition from elementary to middle school? And, to what extent does recent mathematics performance relate to students’ mathematics anxiety in the transition from elementary to middle school? Mathematics anxiety was examined through the motivational theory of expectancy-value, which explores the relationship between individual beliefs and achievement. Most studies agree that mathematics anxiety increases in adolescence, however the reason for the increased anxiety is not clear. In sixth grade, students participated in a Likert-scale survey called the Math Anxiety Scale for Children (MASC). The research participants completed the survey two additional times after the transition to seventh grade. The data were analyzed using repeated-measures analysis of variance, comparing the responses of students in academic math to the data of students in honors math courses in middle school and how the responses changed over time. The statistically significant increase in overall mathematics anxiety in the transition from elementary to middle school was consistent with existing research. The study also indicated the increase in evaluation anxiety was significantly greater for students in the honors course when compared to students in the academic math course. Students in the academic course have consistently higher problem-solving anxiety throughout the study. These differences in anxiety can be used to further the understanding of mathematics anxiety and what can be done to remediate mathematics anxiety and its effect on mathematics achievement.

Book excerpt: The United States ranks in the middle of the nations participating in the Programme for International Student Assessment, and secondary education has not seen growth in mathematics achievement since the 1970s. Computer-assisted math education offers a new opportunity to increase mathematical achievement with students. Pearson Education’s MyMathLab has shown promise at the higher education level with enhancing student proficiency in concepts. The purpose of this study was to determine if the use of Math XL, the secondary counterpart to MyMathLab, could increase mathematics achievement, measured by the performance on the end-of-course test for Algebra I and Geometry for high school students in a computer-assisted math intervention program. The quasi-experimental posttest-only study enhanced the current knowledge of MyMathLab/Math XL as a tool for higher education and demonstrated the effects of using it at the secondary level. The sample was taken from high school Algebra I and Geometry students at an online high school in a southern state. A comparison group was created from students meeting the same criteria for the computer-assisted math intervention program who chose not to participate. An analysis of variance was used to test for statistically significant differences in the end-of-course test scores in those students enrolled in a computer-assisted math intervention program and those students not enrolled in a computer-assisted math intervention program. The analysis found no significant difference in the mean between the group enrolled in computer-assisted intervention and those not enrolled.

The interventions applied, consisting of curricular design, classroom practices, and instructor behaviors, were as follows : (1) use of unit outlines , (2) incorporating review work , (3) collaborative groupwork, (4) perceived instructor empathy , (5) concepts explained in various ways , (6) out-of-class 1:1 aid , (7) content made relevant , (8) positive reinforcement from instructor/peers . The research was performed in an Algebra 1 classroom of a public high school, containing 64 students, over the course of 1 semester (18 weeks). A presurvey and postsurvey measured students' math anxiety levels, while all 8 interventions were applied continuously throughout the semester. Pre - and post anxiety levels, semester grades, and supplementary postsurvey questions regarding students' opinions on intervention effectiveness produced the statistically significant result that targeted interventions do reduce math anxiety. However, when grouped according to achievement level, this result only holds for those students defined by high academic achievement. Overall, the most effective intervention methods were a caring instructor, an encouraging learning environment, and mixing in review work throughout the semester. Book excerpt: Math anxiety in adults impacts performance in mathematics as well as motivation to enter STEM disciplines, irrespective of math competence. Less is known about the link between math anxiety and achievement in younger students, the cognitive mechanism(s) that underlie this relation, and the social factors that contribute to the development of math anxiety. Across three studies, I address whether children report math anxiety as early as 1st and 2nd grade, the cognitive mechanism(s) that underlie a relation between math anxiety and math achievement, and whether a child's teacher might contribute to his/her math anxiety and his/her math performance across the school year they share. A within-subjects pre/post design with students (Studies 1 and 2) and their respective teachers (Study 3) was used. In Study 1, I find that 1st and 2nd graders show variability in their self-reported feelings of math anxiety, and further that children's math anxiety relates to math but not reading achievement. To address why this is the case, I ask whether the math anxiety-achievement relation is moderated by individual differences in working memory capacity. I find that children with higher working memory (WM) counter-intuitively show a more distinct negative math anxiety-achievement relation compared to their lower WM counterparts. In Study 2, I replicate the results of Study 1 with a larger sample of students using both linear regression and hierarchical linear modeling to account for classroom variation in achievement. I also turn towards the literature on individual differences in problem solving strategies to put forth an account of why children with higher WM demonstrate a more pronounced math anxiety-achievement relation. Lastly, in Study 3, I examine whether teachers' math anxiety relates to their students' growth in math achievement and their students' math anxiety across the school year. I find that teacher math anxiety is a significant negative predictor of girls' (but not boys') change in math achievement from the beginning to the end of the school year. However, I do not find evidence for a relation between teacher math anxiety and student math anxiety. This work provides the first empirical evidence of children's math anxiety early in development and its relation to math performance. These results will inform interventions designed to safeguard students from the detrimental effects of math anxiety.
