Although related topics have been studied in other disciplines (e.g., behavioral science, economics, psychology, etc.), IS researchers have paid less attention to the impacts of information communication technology on education (IICTE). Recently, education in the post-pandemic world calls for further investigation on this topic since most of the traditional on-site teaching around the world have moved online. The proposed two studies aim to contribute to the IS and the economics research on the role of technology in education and the underlying mechanisms of how ICT affects learning through a series of field experiments and data mining methods. The first study examines in-class mobile device use effects on students' learning performance via a field experiment. It explores students' attention allocation at an individual level with live video feed data. We collaborated with a vocational school in China to examine the effect of using smartphones in the classroom on students' academic performance. We randomly allocated students taking one lecture in Chinese verbal into three experimental conditions: (i) smartphone banned; (ii) smartphone allowed and used at will by students, and (iii) smartphone allowed, used at will by students and relied upon by teachers to assist instruction. We measure the performance gain of students by the change in the scores they obtained in identical tests taken at the beginning and the end of the lecture. We find that allowing students to use smartphones during the lecture at will reduced performance by 12% (6.3 points on a 100-point scale) compared to when students could not take the smartphones into the classroom. However, allowing smartphones into the classroom and asking teachers to actively use them to assist instruction increased their performance by 20% (10.6 points). These results are driven mainly by already strong students and students in IT-related majors. To unravel the underlying mechanisms that drive the observed effects, we use video feeds collected during our experiment, allowing us to code the time students spent learning versus being distracted, with or without their smartphones. We observed that students spent a similar amount of time learning versus being distracted across all three experimental conditions. Thus, the time students allocate to learning in each condition does not predict performance. Instead, what matters for their performance is the relative time they spent learning versus being distracted when using their smartphones. We show that the increase in performance when smartphones are used to assist instruction comes from students spending a larger percentage of the time learning during the lecture. Our findings contribute to the literature on technology-assisted learning and offer practical and policy implications that teachers and schools can follow to cautiously allow smartphones in the classroom to improve student success. The second study investigates the effects of different Internet access policies on student performance via a field experiment and examines the underlying mechanisms of its impact by mining students' online and offline behaviors. While universities invest a considerable amount to keep up with the increasing demand for Internet connectivity on campus, sufficient doubt exists on the overall efficacy of information communication technologies (ICTs) in enhancing learning. Therefore, it is essential to understand how the Internet is used on campus and whether educational institutions can design their ICT policies to improve education. To answer this question, we seek to investigate the effects of different Internet policies on educational outcomes (i.e., grades, other evaluation results, etc.) by conducting a randomized field experiment at a national public university in China. Specifically, we randomly assigned students to five experimental conditions for a whole semester: low bandwidth and limited data, low bandwidth with unlimited data, high bandwidth with limited data, high bandwidth with unlimited data, and high-quality access (high bandwidth without data limit) yet limited data to entertainment. We then collect and compare the educational outcomes and each student's online and offline behaviors across all five conditions. With our unique context and micro-level data, we investigate the overall effect of different policies as well as the dynamics of students' online and offline learning behaviors (i.e., online learning time, online-offline behavior change, etc.) to understand the underlying mechanisms (i.e., online/offline learning patterns on performance). Our study is the first to investigate the effect of ICT policy design on educational outcomes using a randomized controlled trial (RCT). We also offer practical guidelines to policymakers and educational institutions on optimizing campus Internet access to help improve students' learning with the proper use of ICT. Ultimately, studies in this dissertation attempt to explore how ICT could boost learning and thus extend the boundary of IS research to the education sector. Results demonstrated in the dissertation offer clear and straightforward evidence for educators, parents, and students to make their own ICT use policies.

All rights not granted by the above license are retained by the author. Abstract: Abstract Recently, the integration of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) has attracted much attention. Governments have spent millions of dollars on ICT infrastructure and providing teachers with various kinds of training, trying to equip them with the necessary skills to accomplish such goals as fostering students' "lifelong learning and all-round development" (EC, 2000, p. 3). Consequently, teachers should adjust their teaching approaches in order to meet such aspirations. This research attempted to scrutinize how such changes affect teachers' teaching strategies; to examine whether their ICT knowledge and the use of, such technical know-how, have a positive impact on teaching and learning. In answering this it is important to look into the utilization of ICT resources to see whether they have been managed in a way that enhances students' learning in a sophisticated world; as well as how teachers feel facing the challenge of ICT integration. The findings of this research were summarized in order to devise suggestions for future planning and professional development considerations for schools. This research used a case study approach collecting data through interviewing two Subject Leaders and five Chinese Language teachers at a school in Hong Kong. The data was triangulated using mini-survey and lesson observations. It was found that teachers regarded the current way of providing school-based technical training as a successful one, however they often used presentation slides as well as word processing software to prepare and present their lessons. They seldom used e-communication or designed websites of their own to extent teaching beyond classrooms. It was clearly evident in this study that although the teachers had received ICT training, they still used traditional approaches in conducting their lessons. Nonetheless, the results showed that the teachers of this study would like to further develop their capability through training and sharing. They also believed that the introduction of ICT infrastructure could help them in sharing their resources and promote team work. Indeed, this is one of the major findings and subsequent recommendations that the researcher has put forward as a result of this study, in order to enhance future professional development of teachers in Hong Kong schools. Other considerations include planning the professional developmental programmes in order to suit the needs of the school and soliciting the help of outside forces, such as an IT company and tertiary institutions are helpful as well. Moreover, schools should try to encourage a shared vision developed by the school team to ensure that teachers understand the essence of educational changes and pedagogical uses of ICT resources in their school. Book excerpt: The aim of this research was to investigate the perceived impact of ICT on Zimbabwean A-level science and mathematics teachers' self-directed professional development. The study was based on a questionnaire survey of 254 teachers throughout the country. Supplementary data came from 54 interviews. Some observations of teachers using ICT in teacher-centres, e-mail correspondence, and field reports also contributed to the database of the study. An analysis framework was developed through the use of grounded theory on the interview transcripts. The framework yielded 9 themes relating to the teachers' use of ICT for their professional development. These were: (1) perceived professional identity; (2) career development; (3) Managing the ICT environment; (4) theoretical and content knowledge; (5) practical knowledge and skills; (6) adaptation; (7) professional networking and; (8-9) perceived benefits to teachers and students. Chaos (complexity) theory was used to identify the major attractors (goals) for teachers' self-directed professional development using ICT. Two attractors were identified. These were personal professional development and classroom practice. However, an over-riding factor common to both attractors was identified as self-efficacy. The study identified the over-arching driver for self-directed professional development as the teacher's need to improve their self-efficacy. A two dimensional model of self-directed professional development was suggested. The systemic element of the model focused on the self-correcting impact of ICT use on professional development, whilst the personal element focused on self-efficacy as the central stratum for self-directed professional development. The study concluded by acknowledging the potent role that ICT is playing in the self-directed continuing professional development of teachers in Zimbabwe, and recommended, among other things, the inclusion of A-level teachers in the development of localised online materials resources for their subjects. This will help to enhance relevance of the materials to the Zimbabwean context

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to investigate secondary school teachers' use of information and communication technology (lCT) in North Cypriot schools. The main focus was to discover the barriers and possible enablers in integrating technology into teaching and learning. Also, teachers' attitudes and beliefs towards ICT integration and the ways of their usage were examined in the study. A qualitative research methodology was applied in this study. Case study strategy was utilized in conducting research in one secondary school in North Cyprus. Data were gathered through semi-structures interviews with volunteer teachers. The data were also collected through observations of teachers while using ICT tools in their teaching. Seven teachers were interviewed but only three of them were observed. After completing all observations, follow-up interviews were carried out with these three teachers. The results of the study revealed that although the teachers had positive attitudes towards the technology integration, there was not frequent use of ICT tools in teaching. Moreover, teachers believed that the use of technology would be beneficial for students and themselves. However, there were many factors that hindered their technology use. The main barriers that were mentioned by interviewees were a lack of resources and a lack of access to available rooms. Moreover, teachers' lack of knowledge, confidence, and insufficient training on pedagogical use of technology in teaching was discovered as the most popular barrier in integrating technology. The fundamental conclusion of this study was that not all but many teachers would like to use technology in their teaching but first of all many barriers should be turned into enablers. It is recommended that the authorities needs to develop an JCT policy in order to raise standards in schools. It is also recommended that schools should be equipped with additional lCT tools with the help of businesses or projects. Another important conclusion is that teachers need training, not only for developing the basic skills, but training on improving their technological pedagogical content knowledge (TPCK) as well. Use of ICT in education develops higher order skills such as collaborating across time and place and solving real world problems. It improves the perception and understanding of the world of the student. ICT can be used to prepare the workforce for the information society and the new global economy. The focus of the paper was to explore the attitude of the teachers towards the use of ICT in higher education and its impact on their academic achievement in Tuticorin city. The present study is based on both primary and secondary data covered only three months period (2014). The total household sample is 70. The proportionate random sampling technique has been adopted to select 70 teachers from Tuticorin city. Secondary data and information are collected from the annual reports of the department of statistics, Tamilnadu, books, journals and websites. Class interval technique was used to analysis the age, family size and experience. Percentage analysis, averages, ranking method, standard deviation, chi-square tests, Cramer's V and probability analysis were used for the analysis. It is found that majority of the teachers are most knowledgeable in word processing was ranked first followed by emailing. Well-informed in internet browsing was ranked third, proficiency in spread sheets ranked fourth. Information in statistical tools and presentation tools were ranked fifth and sixth respectively. To know the teacher's attitude and usage of ICT in teaching learning, many teachers have also expressed the opinion that incorporating ICT in teaching is time consuming (59.29%), Lack of skill (20.35%), Syllabus pressure (12.39%) and needs access to a lot of infrastructure (7.96). They want the institution to recognize teachers who use ICT and provide the necessary infrastructure so that others who are nonusers of ICT will be motivated. The result of chi-square-test revealed that there is no significant difference between teacher's attitude and usage of ICT in teaching learning and barriers in implementing ICT in higher education in Tuticorin town.
