Book excerpt: Although clinical supervision is a critical factor in trainees' professional development, international trainees' supervision experiences have not been studied sufficiently. This study investigated how international trainees in the United States communicate with their supervisor during clinical supervision through a national online survey. Specifically, the current study focused on international trainees' discussion about cultural issues (cultural discussion) and what they withhold (nondisclosures) from their supervisors. Trainees' perspectives on supervisory working alliance, supervisor multicultural competence, and supervisor self-disclosure were expected to predict both types of communication style (i.e., cultural discussions and nondisclosures) that take place in supervision with international trainees. The result of multivariate multiple regression indicated that trainees' perception of supervisory working alliance, supervisor multicultural competence, and supervisor self-disclosure collectively predicted international trainees' engagement in cultural discussion and nondisclosure behaviors. Specifically, although supervisory working alliance only predicted international trainees' nondisclosure behavior, supervisor multicultural competence significantly related to both degree to which international trainees engage in cultural discussion and nondisclosure behavior. Supervisor self-disclosure, however, was not related to either trainees' cultural discussion or nondisclosure. Furthermore, squared semi partial correlation indicated that supervisor multicultural competence explained a greater variance for both trainee cultural discussion and nondisclosure than that of supervisor self-disclosure did.

Book excerpt: Supervision has shifted from an authoritarian, didactic model to a relational one. The interpersonal dynamics between supervisor and supervisee are now seen as central to the development of a productive learning experience. As supervisors are becoming more sensitive to their trainee's vulnerability and anxiety, new frameworks for understanding and dealing with this shift are required. This book presents current thinking on such relevant issues as creating an optimal learning environment, establishing a safe space, developing an atmosphere of reflectivity, attuning oneself to the emotional experience of the supervisee, and encouraging the disclosure of the supervisee's countertransference.

Book excerpt: There is a paucity of research detailing what psychotherapy supervisors actually do to effect supervisee development. The present research utilizes both quantitative and qualitative methodologies to examine the effects of supervisor self-disclosure on perceptions of the supervisor and the supervision relationship. Thirty two graduate students participated in the present study. The primary hypothesis was that self-disclosing supervisors would be rated as significantly more facilitative and socially influential than non-disclosing supervisors. The results provide support for this hypothesis in that the analyses of variance performed for the condition of self-disclosure on all dependent variables yielded significant results. In addition, it was found that the self-disclosing supervisors were significantly more preferred than the non-disclosing supervisors.

Book excerpt: This study examined supervisor and supervisee perceptions of the purpose for using supervisor self-disclosure as an intervention in the counseling supervision process while also looking at supervisor and supervisee perceptions of the effects these disclosures have on the supervisee. The participants in this study were school counseling site supervisors and their supervisees enrolled in internship in school counseling at a CACREP accredited land-grant university in the southeastern United States. This study employed a collective case study design using multiple cases as sources for investigating the perspectives of both members of the supervisory dyad regarding the shared experience of a supervisor self-disclosure statement. Qualitative data analysis procedures provided a means for understanding participants’ perspectives. Relevant findings from the research included a common description of self-disclosure among participants and congruent perspectives between supervisors and supervisees sharing the same SRSD experience regarding the intended purpose and perceived effect of the SRSD. The researcher discussed implications for counselor education and for future research.

This book was released on 2012 with total page 106 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This descriptive quantitative study explored the relationship of supervisory effectiveness and supervisory working alliance as rated by supervisor and supervisee. These constructs were assessed by two self report measures: Supervisory Working Alliance Inventory (SWAI) and The Supervision: Adherence and Guidance Evaluation (SAGE). SWAI was used to gather information on the perceptions of the supervisor and supervisee actions of each other, how this affects the relationship, and the supervisee's interaction with clients. The SAGE was utilized to allow for measurement of the facilitating effect the supervisor has on the learner as demonstrated by use of a range of supervisory techniques that are known to be effective. The selection of these measures answers a call from the literature to examine the supervisory process using multiple, methodologically sound measures. A convenience sample of 42 counseling students and supervisors was drawn from students and supervisors at a CACREP accredited university in the Midwest. Participants had the option of completing the questionnaire in the classroom or at their discretion using the internet data collection service Survey Monkey. Several important correlations were examined using a Pearson's correlation coefficient: (a) between supervisee and supervisory perceived working alliance and effectiveness, (b) between supervisees perceived working alliance and effectiveness, and (c) between supervisors perceived working alliance and effectiveness. Positive correlations between working alliance and effectiveness ratings for supervision dyads were anticipated and supported. There was a strong, positive correlation between relationship and effectiveness ratings for supervisors and supervisees, r = .765, p = .01 for supervisee reports and r = .699, p = .001. Internal consistency for these measures was also supported by Cronbach's Alpha analysis. Correlations between supervisor and supervisee reports were anticipated but did not approach significance in this sample. Mean scores for the supervisor group were lower than the supervisee group for working alliance and effectiveness. Supervisor ratings on the SAGE are reflective of a significant difference (p

Book excerpt: Throughout history, the author maintains, man has chosen the road of concealment rather than "openness", a route that all too often results in sickness, misunderstanding and alienation from self. The author explores the implications of a new premise: man can attain health and fullest personal development only insofar as he gains courage to be himself with others and only when he finds goals that have meaning for him, goals which include the reshaping of society so that it is fit for all to live and grow in.

Book excerpt: Abstract: The supervisory alliance between psychology trainee and clinical supervisor plays an important role in the growth and development of the psychologist in training. There are numerous factors that relate to the supervisory alliance. Previous research has indicated that both positive and negative supervision experiences occur during supervision and they act to influence the supervisory working alliance. A counterproductive event is an example of a negative supervision event in which the trainee perceives that an experience in supervision either harmed or hindered his or her growth and development as a therapist. Because counterproductive events regularly happen during a supervision experience, it is important to investigate how the strength of the supervisory alliance relates to counterproductive events. In addition it is important to investigate how the counterproductive event and state of the working alliance relate to the self-efficacy of the trainee. The current study investigated whether counterproductive events that occurred in clinical supervision related to the supervisory working alliance as perceived by the trainee. Additionally the study explored whether there was a relationship between the supervisory working alliance, the presence of counterproductive events, and the trainee's level of self-efficacy. This study utilized a quantitative research design and also included a larger sample than the qualitative research designs used in previous research.

Book excerpt: Supervision is the cornerstone of clinical training across all types of mental health providers. It facilitates the growth of mental health trainees and maintains the integrity of the field of mental health services by ensuring the competency of clinicians. However, the process can be complex and potentially confusing for both supervisors and trainees at any stage of their development or post-licensure career. Utilizing strength-based approaches is crucial to the success of supervision. This workbook facilitates a collaborative and strength-based approach to clinical supervision that both supervisors and trainees can use during the entire course of supervision, or for specific goals related to supervision. Each chapter of this workbook contains information and activities specific to both the trainee and supervisor to facilitate dialogue about individual and combined strengths, areas for growth, and goals for collaborative work. This is an essential start-to-finish guide addressing the entire supervision process, from preparing for the first session to conducting the last session, and everything in between.
